Kilkenny, Ireland has a medieval history, starting with the Early Gothic St. Canice's Cathedral, which was built in the 13th century, although it's been a religious site since the 6th century. Inside, you will find several tombs that are over 500 years old. Kilkenny Castle was originally built in the 12th century as part of the defense of the town. It was the principal Irish residence of the powerful Butler family for almost 600 years. We took a self-guided tour inside. Finally, we stopped at historic Kyteler's Inn for dinner. We listened to some great traditional Irish music and my 18 year-old niece (the legal drinking age in Ireland is 18) had her first alcoholic drink ever! (yeah, right)

Panorama of Kilkenny from the round tower of St Canice's Cathedral
This is the panorama of Kilkenny from the round tower of St Canice's Cathedral. Round towers are stone towers from the middle ages found close to a church or a monastery and almost entirely in Ireland. This is the climable round tower. The purpose of this round tower was most propably to be a bell tower. You can see that there is a graveyard in the cathedral's vincinity. The other large church that you see is St Mary's Cathedral.

St Canice's Cathedral, Kilkenny, Ireland
St Canice's Cathedral and Round Tower are an essential part of the structural heritage in the vibrant medieval city of Kilkenny. This ecclesiastical site was founded in the 6th century and named after St Canice. Cill Channigh is the Gaelic for the Church of Canice, the church that originally stood on the site in the 6th century.
Combining the early Christian settlement, the Round Tower, the Anglo Norman Cathedral and its rich cultural ecclesiastical heritage makes St Canice's Cathedral and its environs a must to visit while you are in Kilkenny.
Worship has taken place at this site for over 800 years. The Cathedral has wonderful stained glass that includes two windows from the Harry Clarke Studio, Dublin. Local stone masters The O'Tooneys carved some of the tombstones many of which are unique to the Cathedral and Kilkenny. The See Chair of the Bishop of Ossory dating back to 1120 can be seen inside the Cathedral.
The Round Tower is the oldest standing structure in Kilkenny City. Tourists can enjoy climbing the Round Tower capturing great views of the city (weather permitting). St Canice's Round Tower is one of only two Round Towers that people can climb in Ireland.
At St Canice's Cathedral worship takes pre-eminence over all other activities. However, this jewel of Gothic Architecture is also used for national concerts and events -- for example the Kilkenny Arts Festival held every August -- which are in keeping with the environs of the Cathedral.
As a pilgrim or tourist visiting the Cathedral Close you will witness a spiritual, cultural, architectural and archaeological wonder of Kilkenny.

St. Canice's Cathedral and Round Tower
The Round Tower is the oldest standing structure in Kilkenny City and it is believed to have been the centre of the first major settlement in Kilkenny. The area surrounding the Cathedral, called “Irishtown” is the oldest part of the City. Tourists over 12 can enjoy climbing the Round Tower which provides great views of the city. The Tower is 30m (100ft) high, but when it was originally built it would have had a conical top, adding a further 5m (18ft) to its height, being removed to allow access for those energetic enough and with a head for heights, it maybe reached by climbing a series of internal ladders raising seven floors and with a total of 121 step. In 1846 – 1847, the base of the tower was excavated and a pavement was discovered; and the skeletons of two adults and two children were also found. The skeletons had been buried in a traditional Christian manner: With their feet to the East and their heads facing West.

The present building dates from the 13th century and is the second longest cathedral in Ireland, after St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. Beside the cathedral stands a 100 ft 9th-century round tower. St Canice's tower is an example of a well-preserved 9th-century Celtic Christian round tower. It is dedicated to St Canice. It is one of only three such medieval round towers in Ireland that can be climbed to the top.
