St Elmo Ghost Town in Buena Vista Colorado
We went to Mt. Princeton Hotsprings. If you pass the hot springs and keep going there is a ghost town up in the mountains. There was 2,000 people living there back in the boom days. Now just a few people live there. I did not film the hot springs because that would be creepy and my Gopro died.
St Elmo, Colorado
A step back in time. Annabel Stark lived here until 1958 when she finally moved into a nursing home. She was responsible for St. Elmo staying in the state of preservation that it is today. Be sure to research this area prior to your visit. It will add greatly to your appreciation of the area. So much to see and do.

St Elmo Colorado Ghost Town
Karen and I and our visit today April 8th 2017 in St. Elmo Colorado which is Colorado's best preserved Ghost Town. It was an absolute blast!!!!
St. Elmo - We walked thru Colorado's MOST PRESERVED GHOST TOWN
Welcome to St. Elmo, Colorado. The TOWN of GHosts and haunts... and a very generous people. The most preserved ghost town in all of Colorado. We walked thru the main street and saw some amazing structures and ancient homes from the 1880s. St. Elmo was known most for the silver and gold mining. Originally named Forest City, it grew into a booming town. St. Elmo was chosen by Griffith Evans, one of the founding fathers, who was reading a novel with the same title at the time. Surrounded by mines and forest, the town's mines began to dry up and many moved away. The Starks were the last remaining residents before they moved away themselves. More can be found about this once booming town on
A HUGE shoutout and special thanks to John at St. Elmo, CO for showing us around and explaining the history and restoration of this great state.

St. Elmo Colorado - A True Old West Ghost Town - Abandoned America
See Photos from our St. Elmo Visit Here:
St. Elmo was first named Forest City but was later changed because of a California town with the same name. The name St. Elmo was chosen by Griffith Evans, one of the founding fathers, who was at the time reading the novel St. Elmo.
At its peak in the 1890s, the town boasted a general store, telegraph office, town hall, Over 5 hotels, a handful of saloons, dancing halls, a newspaper office, and a schoolhouse.
The Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad line ran through St. Elmo (Yes, it's the same South Park you are thinking of). There were 150 mines claimed within St. Elmo. The majority of the folks who lived in St. Elmo worked at the Mary Murphy, Teresa C., The Molly or the Pioneer Mines. The Mary Murphy Mine was the biggest and most productive mine in the area. While in operation, the Mary Murphy Mine recovered over $60,000,000 worth of gold. While the other local mines shut down, the Mary Murphy Mine continued to operate until the gold standard was implemented. Which collapsed the price of silver overnight.
As a result. The Railroad was closed and eventually abandoned in 1922. Even after the world gave up on this town and its mines, people continued to harvest ore. This was done by hand and miners would haul individual mining carts down the mountain.
Once the mining industry closed completely, St. Elmo drastically declined. Miners searched elsewhere for gold, rather than silver. The business district in St. Elmo closed down as well. Few people continued to live in the town. Postal service was discontinued in 1952 after the death of St. Elmo's postmaster. The current population is...three.

St. Elmo was originally named Forest City but was later changed because of the multitude of towns with the same name. The name St. Elmo was chosen by Griffith Evans, one of the founding fathers, who was reading a novel with the same title.
The town was at its peak in the 1890s, when it included a telegraph office, general store, town hall, 5 hotels, saloons, dancing halls, a newspaper office, and a school house. The Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad line ran through St. Elmo. There were 150 patented mine claims within the area. The majority of the people who lived in St. Elmo worked at the Mary Murphy, Teresa C., The Molly or the Pioneer Mines. The Mary Murphy Mine was the largest and most successful mine in the area. The Mary Murphy Mine recovered over $60,000,000 worth of gold while it was in operation. While the other mines eventually shut down, the Mary Murphy Mine continued to operate until the railroad was abandoned in 1922.
Once the mining industry shut down, St. Elmo drastically declined in population. Miners searched elsewhere for gold and silver and the business district in St. Elmo closed down as well. Few people continued to live in the town. Postal service was discontinued in 1952 after the death of St. Elmo's postmaster.
Even though St. Elmo is considered a ghost town it is still inhabited. Tourism brings many people to the St. Elmo area every year. The old mining roads are now used as Jeep and four-wheeler trails. There are also many good places to fish along Chalk Creek, which runs through St. Elmo.
The general store is open during the summer, when tourists can rent four-wheelers or buy items. Many of the buildings are still intact. However, the town hall and a few other buildings burnt down in 2002. Buena Vista Heritage is rebuilding the town hall to its original state.

This is the Ghost Town, St. Elmo. It's a cool trip in the past to the old mining days. It's very small but worth the drive. This town is full of little chipmunks, squirrels, and prairie dogs who aren't afraid to mingle with you for some sunflower seeds.
WARNING: I don't recommend any of the 4-wheeling trails. Unless you are stupid.

Ghost Mining Towns of Colorado, United States 2005 - Vicksburg, Winfield, Clear creek canyon, Rockdale-Silverdale
Colorado has over 1,500 ghost towns. Currently only about 640 remain. Due to incomplete records and legends that are now accepted as fact, no list will ever be complete. Ghost towns are predominantly of few reasons: mining towns, abandoned when the mines closed; many due to the devaluation of silver in 1893, mill towns that were abandoned when the mining towns closed, farming towns on the eastern plains deserted due to rural depopulation, coal towns abandoned when the coal, or need for it ran out, stage stops abandoned when the railroad came through, and the rail stops that were deserted when then railroad changed routes or abandoned the spurs. Some were resort towns which never brought in enough tourists. One or two were caused by the creation of reservoirs, or covered in mining tailings.
