St George's Church : Architecture
The church is built with a combination of Neo-Classical, Georgian and English Palladian architecture styles. Built entirely by Indian convict labour, it was built of brick on a solid plastered stone base.
The Church features a portico of Doric columns. The original roof was flat but was converted to a gable in 1864 as the original flat roof was found to be unsuitable in the tropical climate. The apex of the roof is topped by an octagonal shaped steeple.
A memorial pavilion was erected in 1886 in memory of Captain Francis Light during the Centenary Celebrations of the founding of modern Penang.
In 2007, the church was declared one of the 50 National Treasures of Malaysia by the Malaysian federal government. It underwent a major restoration in 2009.

Watercolor painting of St. George's Church a heritage building in Penang, Malaysia. I used Arches hot press watercolor paper for this painting. Hot press paper has no grooves, so the fine lines of the building would be straight and smooth.
This bulding is a very prominent structure in the middle of George Town’s bustling city centre. It is surrounded by several important colonial buildings in the area including the Penang Court House, the Town Hall and the City Council. It was built in 1817 and was modeled on the design of St. George’s Cathedral, Madras, in the Georgian-Palladian style.

Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, the spiritual leader of the worldwide Anglican community, visited the St. George's church in George Town, Penang on Wednesday.
His arrival marked the first official visit by an Archbishop of Canterbury to an Anglican church in the Diocese of West Malaysia.
