How to Bike Across Bermuda
A small country, Bermuda is only 22 miles from end to end, so it's easy to miss off-the-beaten path places when traveling by car or scooter. But there's another way to travel across the island that many visitors and even locals overlook. Hop on a bike!
There's a one of a kind bike-riding experience on the Bermuda Railway Trail. The train closed in 1948, but the 22-mile path is still open to cyclists and runs from Somerset to St George's. Check out the highlights of cycling Bermuda in Peter Greenberg's latest Hidden Gems adventure.

Bermuda Vacation 1939 ~ The Waterlot Tavern at Jew's Bay
A very brief (accidental?) shot from below the “Rattle and Shake” train - unknown location.
A stop at the beach – The Queen of Bermuda arriving in Hamilton Harbor, it’s a busy day at number 1 shed with lots of carriages for hire on Front Street.
Great pan of Burnaby Hill / Front Street junction from the docks.
South shore beach, probably Tuckers Town.
Some rare views of the Waterlot Tavern exterior overlooking Jew’s Bay (This was the ancestral home of the Darrell family. Built in 1670 it is now owned by the Fairmont Southampton Princess now operated as the Waterlot Inn restaurant). A shot of the house from above then an “Inland Mail” mail delivery by horse and carriage – newspapers?
Back at Waterlot Tavern on the waterside, is that Claudia Darrell (proprietor) at the table?
From the Waterlot Inn website: For three hundred years the Waterlot, located below the Fairmont Southampton on Middle Road at Jews Bay, was the ancestral home of the Darrell family. Built in 1670, its cellars were for years used by seafarers for storage of cargo from the vessels moored just offshore.
The home was traditionally passed on to the eldest son of the Darrell family, but earlier this century Miss Claudia Darrell (1869-1949), a legendary Bermudian character, broke the all-male chain when she took possession of the family home.
For years Claudia served as postmistress of Southampton East, using for her office the old carriage house. She inherited the job from her father, James Thomas Darrell who was a direct descendant of Bermuda’s first postmaster, James Perot, who issued the now famous and precious Perot stamps.
Claudia eventually converted her home into an inn redolent of an old English tavern. “Come in and make yourself comfortable” was the cheery and sincere refrain given all visitors, among them Eleanor Roosevelt, Mark Twain, James Thurber and Eugene O’Neill. Furthermore, a US President and First Lady, as well as Olympian Gold Medalists, Ryder Cup golf and America's Cup sailing champions, alongside Oscar winning Hollywood actors and various other celebrities from the sports & entertainment world were spotted at the iconic restaurant.

Mr. Happy Man - Johnny Barnes
If english isn't your native language you can help with translation at
Johnny Barnes born John James Adolphus Mills on June 23, 1924, is a Bermuda native found waving to passing traffic at the Foot of the Lane roundabout in Hamilton, Bermuda, from roughly 3:45 am to 10 am, every workday, rain or shine. A Bermuda institution mentioned in several guidebooks and profiled in a documentary film, he is known for waving and saying I love you, God loves you, to passing commuters during the morning rush hour into Hamilton. Due to the unique layout of the island and its roads, nearly all drivers at rush hour coming from the western and southern areas of the island pass Barnes at the roundabout.
Barnes, now an elderly pensioner, was an electrician by trade and worked on the Bermuda Railroad as an electrician until the railroad closed in 1948. He then became a bus driver. Barnes was fond of waving to people while driving the bus, and would occasionally sit and wave to people on his breaks or when coming to work.
One day in approximately 1986, Barnes stopped at the Crow Lane roundabout took up waving to traffic. He has been there almost every day since, and local radio stations report receiving frantic calls when Barnes is not at his unofficial post. He is occasionally joined by people, sometimes costumed, waving signs to promote a charity, event, or business.
In the 2011 short-subject documentary, Mr. Happy Man, Barnes identifies himself as a religious man, a Seventh-Day Adventist who is motivated to share God's love for everyone. Though Barnes will pray with visitors to his post if requested, he is not known as a religious proselytizer.
In November 1998, a group of local businessmen unveiled a life-size bronze statue of Barnes blowing kisses in the air. The statue is located on Crow Lane just up from the roundabout. Although there were objections to spending $70,000 to build a statue to a man still living, Barnes said in Mr. Happy Man that he appreciated the gesture while he was still alive, saying he wouldn't be able to enjoy it if he were dead.
Barnes was married in 1949 and still lives with his wife. His wife has a cheery disposition because he (Johnny) has covered her with honey since they were married.

Mary Celeste
Mary Celeste (or Marie Celeste as it is fictionally referred to by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and others after him) was a British merchant brigantine. The ship is famous for having been discovered on 5 December 1872 in the Atlantic Ocean, unmanned and apparently abandoned (the one lifeboat was missing, along with its crew of eight and two passengers), although the weather was fine and her crew were experienced and capable seamen.
Mary Celeste was in seaworthy condition and still under sail heading toward the Strait of Gibraltar. She had been at sea for a month and had more than six months' worth of food and water on board. Her cargo was virtually untouched and the crew's personal belongings including valuables were still in place. None of those on board were ever seen or heard from again and their disappearance is often cited as the greatest maritime mystery of all time.

London Heathrow Airport
London Heathrow Airport or Heathrow (IATA: LHR, ICAO: EGLL) is a major international airport serving London, England, known as London Airport from 1946 until 1965. Located in the London Borough of Hillingdon, in West London, Heathrow is the busiest airport in the United Kingdom and the fifth busiest airport in the world (as of 2014) in total passenger traffic, handling more international passengers than any other airport around the globe. It is also the busiest airport in Europe by passenger traffic. Heathrow is London's main airport, having replaced RAF Northolt and the earlier Croydon Airport. The airport sustains 76,600 jobs directly and around 116,000 indirectly in the immediate area, and this, together with the large number of global corporations with offices close to the airport, makes Heathrow a modern aerotropolis which contributes an estimated 2.7% to London's total GVA.
The airport is owned and operated by Heathrow Airport Holdings, which also owns and operates three other UK airports, and is itself owned by FGP TopCo Limited, an international consortium led by the Spanish Ferrovial Group that includes Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec and Government of Singapore Investment Corporation. Heathrow is the primary hub for British Airways and the primary operating base for Virgin Atlantic.

SUMMARY
=======
Benjamin Franklin Butler (November 5, 1818 – January 11, 1893) was a major general of the Union Army, politician, lawyer and businessman from Massachusetts. Born in New Hampshire and raised in Lowell, Massachusetts, Butler is best known as a political major general of the Union Army during the American Civil War, and for his leadership role in the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. He was a colorful and often controversial figure on the national stage and in the Massachusetts political scene, during his one term as Governor.
Butler, a successful trial lawyer, served in the Massachusetts legislature as an antiwar Democrat and as an officer in the state militia. Early in the Civil War he joined the Union Army, where he was noted for his lack of military skill, and his controversial command of New Orleans, which brought him wide dislike in the South and the Beast epithet. He helped create the legal idea of effectively freeing fugitive slaves by designating them as contraband of war in service of military objectives, which led to a political groundswell in the North which included general emancipation and the end of slavery as official war goals. His commands were marred by financial and logistical dealings across enemy lines, some of which probably took place with his knowledge and to his financial benefit.
Butler was dismissed from the Union Army after his failures in the First Battle of Fort Fisher, but soon won election to the United States House of Representatives from Massachusetts. As a Radical Republican he opposed President Johnson's Reconstruction agenda, and was the House's lead manager in the Johnson impeachment proceedings. As Chairman of the House Committee on Reconstruction, Butler authored the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 and coauthored the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1875.
In Massachusetts, Butler was often at odds with more conservative members of the political establishment over matters of both style and substance. Feuds with Republican politicians led to his being denied several nominations for the governorship between 1858 and 1880. Returning to the Democratic fold, he won the governship in the 1882 election with Democratic and Greenback Party support. He ran for President on the Greenback ticket in 1884.
