St. George Island is an unincorporated community census-designated place in St. Mary's County, Maryland, United States. The post office at Piney Point, Maryland serves the island, which is connected to it by a short bridge. During the War of 1812 the British made the island their headquarters, and raided shipyards and river plantations from this base. Many tall pines on the island were cut and shipped to England for ship masts. In the 19th century the Roman Catholic Church, which owned the island, finally opened it to settlement, including some settlers who migrated from Smith Island.

Spectacular View//St Mary's River, St. George Island, Maryland

This was the view off our balcony overlooking the St. Mary's River on St. George Island/Piney Point, Maryland.The water was so close to us you could hear the waves lapping in the room. Seagulls and cranes could be spotted as well as local fishermen casting out a line. The area is very peaceful as you can see from my video. Both sunset and sunrise views were available at this particular Choice hotel with balconies on each side of the building. The westward side was a view of the Potomac River. Overall it was a beautiful place to stay and pretty convenient to the Naval Air Station in Patuxent River.

State Marathon Number 29 Piney Point Maryland

For my 29th marathon I decided to to Maryland in the town of Piney Point. It was a very cold marathon. It was about 34 degrees at the start and it didn't go higher than 40 degrees. I never threw away my throw away sweater. The course was nice and flat except for miles 17-20 which had some rolling hills. Overall great marathon.
