Exploring St James Church in Shere, Surrey
Continuing my exploration of the beautiful village of Shere in Surrey, I turn my attention to the parish church of St James. Once again my guide is Marq English, friend and fellow youtuber.
The church of St James is in the Early English style, most being 12th, 13th and 14th century. It replaced an earlier Anglo-Saxon church mentioned in the Domesday Book. Constructed of ironstone rubble with sandstone buttresses, it was restored in 1895 by S. Weatherley. By the north chancel wall there is a 14th-century quatrefoil window and squint – belonging to an Anchorite cell. There is 14th-century glass in the east window and the chancel fittings were renewed in 1956 by Louis Osman. It is a Grade I listed building.

A Tour of the Beautiful Village of Shere in Surrey.
Today I am taking a stroll through the quintessentially English village of Shere in Surrey, close to Dorking and Guildford and just south of the A25. My guide is the knowledgeable Marq English who used the village as a location for his film productions.
Shere is a small still partly agricultural village chiefly set in the wooded 'Vale of Holmesdale' between the North Downs and Greensand Ridge with many traditional English features.

Guildford, Surrey, United Kingdom - Part Two - St Martha's on the hill
The second and final part of Mark and Nickeys visit to Guildford in Surrey where we walk from Pewley Down and then up to the church of St Martha's on the hill.
Apart from being a great walk the views from the church are stunning and you can clearly see why this area is so popular with walkers.

Ninos and Semele
This is probably the first attempt of erasure poetry in modern Assyrian literature. I hope you will enjoy it. I have erased the short story written by the late Rabi Youel Baaba. The short story was called: 'Am Treede d-Umta' (Together with the Exiles of the Nation) and it was published in 1997 in his collection of short stories under the title: 'Tunaye men Tkhara d-Treede' (Stories from the memory of Exiles).
I have called the poem which I have erased out of this short story: 'Ninos and Semele'. I am dedicating it to the memory of the innocent child 'Ninos' who lost his life due to a Syrian army military strike on the Assyrian village of Walto (Tel Nasri) in Khabour Syria.

Lovely little village just out side of Guilford, Will have to revisit here when spring arrives. Simply a beautiful little place and we met some really nice people who were happy to tell there stories of the village and show us where to go to get some nice photos.

Godalming is a historic market town, civil parish and administrative centre of the Borough of Waverley in Surrey, England, 4 miles SSW of Guildford. Godalming traverses the banks of the River Wey in the Greensand Ridge – a hilly, heavily wooded part of the outer London commuter belt and Green Belt. In 1881, it became the first place in the world to have a public electricity supply and electric street lighting.
Godalming is 30.5 mi (49.1 km) southwest of London and shares a three-way twinning arrangement with the towns of Joigny in France and Mayen in Germany. Friendship links are in place with the state of Georgia and Moscow. James Oglethorpe of Godalming was the founder of the colony of Georgia.
Godalming is regarded as an expensive residential town, partly due to its visual appeal, favourable transport links and high proportion of private housing. In recent years it has been ranked the UK's third most desirable property hotspot, and voted the fourth best area of the UK in which to live. The borough of Waverley, which includes Godalming, was judged in 2013 to have the highest quality of life in Great Britain
Godalming Town Council contains has 138 listed buildings, of which 82 are within the town centre rather than any of the named adjoining neighbourhoods, and 18 of which are monuments. These include Tudor timber framed buildings, 17th-century brickwork buildings and a wider selection of buildings are on the locally listed buildings register. One of its most famous landmarks is 'The Pepperpot' which is Godalming's old town hall.
Other significant buildings in the town include Edwin Lutyens's Red House, and a significant English public school, Charterhouse, which stands 0.7 mi (1.1 km) from the town centre, on the top of Charterhouse Hill, which is half-separated from Frith Hill by a steep ravine. Its main building is grade II listed and the chapel built by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott is Grade II* listed.
Godalming railway station is on the Portsmouth Direct Line between London Waterloo and Portsmouth, served by South West Trains only. Godalming lies approximately equidistant (50 kilometres) from Heathrow and Gatwick, the two major commercial international airports in South East England. Fairoaks and is the closest airport, but no scheduled services are available therefrom.

Lavenham is a village, civil parish and electoral ward in Suffolk, England. It is noted for its 15th century church, half-timbered medieval cottages and circular walk. In the medieval period it was among the 20 wealthiest settlements in England. Today, it is a popular day-trip destination for people from across the country along with another historic wool town in the area, Long Melford.
Before the Norman conquest, the manor of Lavenham had been held by the thegn Ulwin or Wulwine. In 1086 the estate was in the possession of Aubrey de Vere I, ancestor of the Earls of Oxford. He had already had a vineyard planted there. The Vere family continued to hold the estate until 1604, when it was sold to Sir Thomas Skinner. Lavenham prospered from the wool trade in the 15th and 16th century, with the town's blue broadcloth being an export of note. By the late 15th century, the town was among the richest in the British Isles, paying more in taxation than considerably larger towns such as York and Lincoln.
During the reign of Henry VIII, Lavenham was the scene of serious resistance to Wolsey’s ‘Amicable Grant’, a tax being raised in England to pay for war with France. However, this was happening without the consent of parliament. In 1525, 10,000 men from Lavenham and the surrounding villages took part in a serious uprising that threatened to spread to the nearby counties of Essex and Cambridgeshire.
Like most of East Anglia, Lavenham was staunchly Parliamentarian throughout the Civil Wars of the 1640s. Most local landowners, such as Sir Nathaniel Barnardiston, Sir Philip Parker and Sir William Spring, were strong advocates of the Parliamentarian cause. Like many East Anglian settlements, Lavenham was home to RAF Station Lavenham an American Air Force airfield during the Second World War.
The village is located around five miles north east of the town of Sudbury. Situated in a relatively hilly area, Lavenham is situated on a ridge on the western bank of the River Brett. The ridge is intersected by two small valleys, breaking it into three parts; the church is located atop the southernmost section, the marketplace on the central part, while the northernmost section is topped by the remains of a windmill.
Lavenham is located on the A1141, the main road between Hadleigh and Bury St Edmunds. HGV traffic has been an issue for the village's narrow streets. The village formerly had a railway station on the Long Melford-Bury St Edmunds branch line, which was opened on 9 August 1865. There were plans for the Hadleigh branch line to be extended to Lavenham, though these never came to fruition. The line was an important goods route during the Second World War and was guarded by numerous Type 22 pillboxes, most of which are still visible in the surrounding farmland. The railway station was closed to passengers on 10 April 1961 as part of the Beeching Axe, with a goods service surviving until April 1965.

#84 A Wander Around St Michael’s Church - Mickleham
In this Vlog, I have a little wander around St Michael’s Church in the small Village of Mickleham in the Mole Valley within the Surrey Hills. The Village lies near to the old Roman road of Stane Street and appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Parts of the Church date back to the Norman period but there was an earlier structure here since Anglo-Saxon times (possibly earlier).
