Brahms Requiem: Denn wir haben, St James Cathedral Choir, Chicago with Jonathan Ryan, organist
The Choir of St. James Cathedral (Episcopal) in Chicago, IL, directed by Bruce Barber, Director of Cathedral Music, with Jonathan Ryan, organist and Visiting Artist 2012-2013, performs the sixth movement, Denn wir haben, from Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45 by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) live in concert. The performance took place on March 18, 2012 at St. James Cathedral, Chicago, IL. Ryan accompanies the Choir with his own transcription of the Requiem for organ. The concert, which included the entire Requiem and an organ solo work of J.S. Bach, was showcased on the Friday night Music in Chicago program of Chicago's Classical Music Station, WFMT.

Beautiful Wedding at Chicago Union Station & St. James Chapel
Union Station Chicago wedding reception and ceremony at St. James Chapel. There are many parts about this wedding video that might take your breath away. For starters, Kate, her family, and her bridal party prepared for the big day on the 25th floor of the Trump International Hotel & Tower in Chicago. Their room overlooked the Chicago River and the beautiful view of Chicago's skyline. After Kate was ready, a beautiful Rolls Royce Silver Wraith seDanca from Elegant Motoring was waiting with a chauffeur, holding open the door for Kate and her father. Matt choked back some tears while Kate was led down the aisle at St. James Chapel in Chicago. The wedding party continued in a beautiful landscape of colors designed by Kehoe Designs at Chicago Union Station -- The Great Hall. There's something about the wedding couple walking down that grande staircase that is a great visual for us. Guests danced the night away with a variety of music from Rendezvous Music and ate at one of the most unique dessert bars (liquid nitrogen ice cream) I've ever seen from Nitro Dessert Station. All of this was coordinated by the amazing Five Grain Events team. This was the first time we worked with Peter Wynn Thompson and enjoyed every minute of this day working with him. Kate and Matt, we hope you enjoy this trailer as a wonderful memory of your beautiful day.

The the roaring 20's in Chicago was a time of open warfare between two powerful criminal organizations each seeking to control the cities illegal vice industry. It was the south side Italians led by Johnny Torrio then Al Capone against the northside Irish headed by Dion O'Bannion, Hymie Weiss, and Bugs Moran. In the end the Italians were victorious because they could deliver the big hit while the north siders blew there big chances. And this spot on Chicago's near north side was the site of two of the biggest hits delivered by the south siders.
The second assassination spot is the one you see first on the video clip. The steps of Holy Name Cathedral was the site of the execution of Hymie Weiess then leader of the northsiders. Gunmen in a apartment across the street opened fire on Weiss and his enterouge. He was killed by a wild shot fired by his own bodyguard. You can still see marks on the cornerstone from bullets fired in the shooting.
The men were heading into a flower store across the street. Next door to the rooming house where the gunmen fired from. The flower store was owned by the gang and was the site of the hit on Dion O'Bannion who was the previous head of the northside gang, That had happened a couple of years earlier and resulted in the failed hits on Johnny Torrio and Al Capone. Taking us back to the second hit.
Of course the war between north and south would continue and three years later Capone would (allegedly) make his third big hit this time against Bugs Moran. But they missed their target and the outcry over the slaughter of so many at once was the downfall of Big Al. It would also result in a stronger, smarter organization headed by Paul the Waiter Ricca. One that would control the city and surrounding area for all practical purposes for almost forty years. It was in fact the most powerful criminal organization in the country because of it's local control.
This clip is part of the series The Outfit Now & Then produced by MindsiMedia and presented on ChiTownView's YouTube station. We show a mixture of crime scenes and homes associated with different Chicago mobsters and tell a little history with each clip. On our blog we have started posting a history of this organization that for many years had an incredible amount of influence and power over the second largest city in the country. While there was corruption in most of the big cities the level of influence in Chicago and many nearby suburbs was much stronger. In the HBO series Boardwalk Empire they have a storyline that is based the Chicago outfit and it's where we start our series.

Holy Father Pope Francis appointed Rev. Fr. Joy Alappatt, Pastor of Mar Thoma Sleeha SyroMalabar Cathedral, Chicago as the Auxiliary Bishop of St. Thomas SyroMalabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago on July 24, 2014. The appointment was communicated by Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States on July 23, 2014. His titular see is Bencenna.
Mar Joy Alappatt was born at Parappukara, in Thrissur district, Kerala, India, on September 27, 1956 as the second son of late Mr. Varghese and late Mrs. Rosy Alappatt. He has two brothers and two sisters. His baptismal name is John and he is named after the patron saint of his parish, St. John Nepomucene. He is commonly known as Fr Joy Alappatt. He had his primary School at St. George Lower Primary School, Puthenpally, Varapuzha; his Upper Primary School at A.U.P.S., Parappukkara, and his high school at P.V.S. High School, Parapukkara.
He joined the St. Mary’s Minor Seminary, Thope, Thrissur, after his high school. He completed his major seminary at St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathoor, Kottayam. He was ordained priest by Mar James Pazhayattil on December 31, 1981 for the diocese of Irinjalakuda. He served as Assistant Parish Priest at Chalakudy, Mala, and St. Thomas Cathedral, Irinjalakuda. He earned his Masters in Theology from St. Joseph’s Pontifical Institute, Aluva. He completed his Masters in Sociology from Andhra University. He served as a Chaplain and Mission Director of SyroMalabar community in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India for six years from 1987 to 1993.
He came to the United States in 1994 and served as Associate Pastor in Staten Island, New York and New Milford, New Jersey. He completed his Clinical Pastoral Education Program and worked at Georgetown University, Washington, DC, as a certified Chaplain. He was invited by Mar Jacob Angadiath in 2001 to serve in the St. Thomas SyroMalabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago and he was appointed as the Director of SyroMalabar Mission of Garfield, Newark and Administrator of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Garfield. He was the Convener of SyroMalabar Convention 2003, New Jersey. He has been serving as the Pastor (Vicar) of the Mar Thoma Sleeha SyroMalabar Catholic Cathedral, Chicago, Illinois since August 2011. He has written lyrics for several Christian devotional songs and published a few music albums. He is a known retreat preacher, an effective pastor with efficient administrative skills.
As an Auxiliary Bishop, he will be serving the St. Thomas SyroMalabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago, together with Mar Jacob Angadiath, Bishop of the diocese.

Flag Runners: Episcopal Diocese of Chicago - Why some flagpoles fly small flags
People and flags! We are at the Headquarters & Center of the Episcopal Church in Chicago where they are flag flyers that have two beautiful flagpoles. Thesee flagpoles are well taken care of by the maintenance managers at the church center. The halyard system was up to date without much cause for concern. These poles are ~40' tall. Typically, a 35 foot flagpole will fly a 6 x 10 size flag just to set up what this video is really demonstrating to us flag flyers. You can fly even larger flags on these massive poles, 8 ft x 10 ft or even 10 ft x 15 ft is more appropriate!
When you glance up through the trees, and even as we approached these beauties, we saw the flags were no larger than 4 ft x 6 ft. A really nice US flag and a equally nice Episcopal flag were dancing in the wind for all the locals and visitors to see and enjoy. At the time, I wanted to walk up to the main office in the Episcopal center and ask why fly such small flags on such impressive flag poles ? But when you really look at the intelligent set up of these smaller than normal flags arrangement speaks for itself.
City laws are quite strict about preserving the aesthetics of the street, its foliage, trees, sidewalk clearance, available retail use of the sidewalks etc. You can see in this video the tree branches have grown towards the flag and the Episcopal diocese had no choice but to go with smaller flags. We commend them for flying smaller flags rather than staying with a larger flag, which would most likely be caught by a surrounding tree limb.
The Episcopal Diocese of Chicago is not just a community of worship, but an active partner in the Chicago event schedule. Wonderful musical events and social awareness are orchestrated and held year round in its Churches and facilities. Chicago holds the 12th largest communion of Episcopal Diocese in the United States. Founded in 1835, St. James Cathedral was built to succeed Saint Peter and Paul, which was destroyed by fire in 1921.
Stop in on the first day of Summer and enjoy the Rush Hour concert series. You won't be disappointed!
