St Leonard's Tower is a Norman keep in West Malling, in the county of Kent, England. The tower was built by Bishop Gundulf around 1080. Situated beside Manor Park Country Park, along St.Leonard's Road.
St Leonard's Tower was built between 1077 and 1108 by Bishop Gundulf. In 1090, Gundulf also founded St. Mary’s Abbey in West Malling for Benedictine nuns. It probably served as a fortified house (or Castle),although it is also said to be the tower of the church of St Leonard, which was 70 feet (21 m) long by 32 feet (9.8 m) wide. The church is said to have been demolished for the materials it was made from.Constructed of ragstone, the surviving tower is 32 feet (9.8 m) square, and 60 feet (18 m) to 70 feet (21 m) tall, being built into a hillside. There were three floors. The tower is a Grade I listed building.

West Malling is a historic market town in the Tonbridge and Malling district of Kent, England. It has a population of about 2,500 to 5,000. West Malling contains several historic buildings, including St Leonard's Tower, a Norman keep built by Bishop Gundulf (bishop between 1077 and 1108). He also built the White Tower of the Tower of London, the castles of Rochester and Colchester, and the Priory and Cathedral of Rochester. In c.1090 Gundulf founded St. Mary's Abbey in West Malling for Benedictine nuns. This historic site contains significant buildings from the Norman, medieval, Tudor and Georgian eras. There is also a Grade II* Listed 1966 abbey church which is used by the Anglican Benedictine nuns who have made Malling Abbey their home since 1916.
Other buildings of interest in West Malling include the Prior's House, once a residence for those with leprosy; Ford House, over 600 years old; a mainly Georgian High Street; the Swan Hotel, an 18th-century coaching inn (Grade II listed), and Went House, built c.1720 and noted for its elegant brickwork. Manor Park Country Park is just to the south of the town, close to St Leonard's Tower and Douce's Manor, whose grounds the park once comprised.
This new parish is a mixed residential housing estate and commercial development formed from parts of West Malling, Mereworth, East Malling and Wateringbury. The 2004 Wealth of the Nation report lists Kings Hill as having the highest average income and the highest proportion of households earning more than £100,000 per annum in Great Britain.
West Malling is some 35 miles (56 km) from central London, next to the main road between London and the coastal ferry ports of Folkestone and Dover and with good links by road and rail; the area has become a popular commuter location. Originally established on the main road to London from the coast, West Malling is about a mile (1½ km) from Junction 4 of the M20, and from Junction 2 of the M26 which leads on to the M25, encircling London.
West Malling station, situated on the outskirts of the town, provides a regular service, operated by Southeastern Trains, up to Victoria, and down to Maidstone and Ashford. Journeys into London take around one hour. Direct services to London Bridge and Cannon Street were withdrawn in December 2009. With the recent development of Kings Hill, the station was renamed West Malling for Kings Hill, and in 2007 road access was provided from the West Malling bypass, taking commuter traffic away from the High Street.

St Leonard’s Tower stands on a natural sandstone ledge near the head of a narrow valley on the south-western edge of the village of West Malling.
The tower is a mysterious survival. It is thought by some to have been part of a castle built between 1077 and 1108 by Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester, who founded St Mary’s Abbey, situated about 700 metres (760 yards) to the north-east.
Alternatively it may have been built by Bishop Odo of Bayeux, who was half-brother of William the Conqueror (and who is thought to have commissioned the famous tapestry); he held church lands at West Malling. The tower takes its name from a chapel dedicated to St Leonard that once stood nearby.
Little is known about the history of St Leonard’s Tower. There is no evidence of fireplaces or latrines, which may indicate that the building was used for defensive, rather than domestic, purposes. Alternatively, the tower may have served as a centre for the administration of the local estates of the bishopric.
At a later date the roof of the tower was removed and windows were blocked; these alterations may have been related to the building’s later use as storage for hops.

St Leonard's Tower is a probable Norman keep in West Malling, in the county of Kent, England. The tower was probably built by Gundulf, the Bishop of Rochester, between 1077 and 1108. It was a three storey building, constructed of local stone, and would have stood at least 22 metres (72 ft) high. At a later point, probably during the English Civil War, the tower was deliberately damaged to prevent it being used for military purposes, and its uppermost storey was demolished. Concerns grew about the tower's condition in the 20th century and in 1937 it was taken into the guardianship of the state. In the 21st century, it is managed by English Heritage and the exterior is open to visitors.

Shoppers in West Malling are tested on their cognitive skills
US President Donald Trump has passed a cognitive exam and is in excellent health, that's according to his White House doctor. The 71-year-old had a three-hour examination in his first medical since becoming President and scored full marks. It comes after the release of a controversial book fuelled speculation about the President's mental health. We tested shoppers in West Malling.
West Malling GP surgery sale causes outrage
Residents in West Malling say they're furious after finding out their GP surgery has gone up for sale.
The high street doctor's looks set to close meaning that patients will have to travel further to Kings Hill and face longer waiting times.
The surgery says that it'll still have some services available.

Tonbridge is a market town in the English county of Kent. Tonbridge is located on the River Medway, approximately 4 miles north of Royal Tunbridge Wells, 12 miles south west of Maidstone and 29 miles (47 km) south east of London. Tonbridge belongs to the administrative borough of Tonbridge and Malling.
Tonbridge stands on spur of higher land where the marshy River Medway could be more easily forded. Ancient trackways converged at this point. Tonbridge Castle was built here in the 11th century by Richard Fitz Gilbert. In medieval times, Tonbridge was considered an important strategic settlement. The King intended it to be a walled town, and a charter was issued allowing for walls to be built.
Tonbridge School, the famous public school, was established in 1552 under letters patent of Edward VI, to educate the sons of local gentry and farmers (There was already a nearby school in existence for poorer boys, now Sevenoaks School.). During Queen Mary's reign Tonbridge was involved in an unsuccessful uprising against the Queen's marriage to the King of Spain
Major industries include light engineering, printing and publishing, distribution and financial services. Tonbridge, together with its neighbour Tunbridge Wells, has been designated by the South East Assembly as a Regional Hub.
Tonbridge railway station is one of Kent's busiest with 4.1 million passengers using it each year. It is an important railway junction with lines to London, Ashford, Hastings and Redhill. The town is also served by the A21 trunk road between London and Hastings and the A26 between Maidstone and Brighton. It is also close to the M25 motorway. Tonbridge is served by numerous bus routes, most of which are run by Arriva Southern Counties.

Manor Park
Manor Park Country Park is a country park in West Malling, Kent, England. The 52-acre (210,000 m2) park, formerly the private gardens of the nearby Douces Manor was purchased from the manor's owners by Kent County Council in 1973 to be converted into a public open space.
History:
This Country park was bought by Kent County Council, in 1973 by using a grant aid from the Countryside Commission. The site covers 52 acres (210,000 m2), part of which was the estate of the nearby 18th Century Manor House. The Grade Listed II building (formerly owned by Thomas Augustus Douce) is opposite the park (across St. Leonard's Street).It was still within the Douce family hands, until 1916, when the manor was bought by the Trustees of Fredrick Andrews to convert it into a convalscent home for ladies. The house was then used in the Second World War to accommodate airmen and was used as the headquarters and Mess for officers flying from the nearby RAF West Malling Airfield. Inside the Georgian wine cellar (of the house), 'the Twitch Inn' was established. This was so named because of all the nervous tics caused by constantly looking out for enemy aircraft, of the pilots.Names of the pilots are still etched on the walls of the cellar.Many famous air aces have frequented Douces Manor, including ‘Sailor’ Moran, Stanford Tuck, Guy Gibson (a Dambusters pilot) and Wing Commander John ‘Cats Eyes’ Cunningham (a top RAF night-flight pilot) with his navigator Jimmy Rawnsley.The park is divided into 4 main sections;- the Lake, Douce's Meadow, Ice House Field, Abbey Field and Chestnut Paddocks.
The Lake - a large body of water, running the length of St.Leonards Road. Thomas Douce made many alterations to the estate during his ownership, including pushing the lake further into the Parkland away from the house and making a new road beside the lake and the old St Leonards Street became his front and back drive to the manor house. This meant a lot of landscaping works were carried out.n the mid-1920s the lake froze over and was used for ice skating. The lake and its surrounding woodland are a haven for water wildlife, including Mallard ducks, coots, swans and moorhens. In summer, Martins and swallows visit the lake.
Douce's Meadow - Large parkland meadow, in the past it had wide open views across towards the house and West Malling Church.
Ice House Field - a smaller meadow (across the lake) that takes its name from the site of a former ice house. The sunken brick constructed chamber, with a concrete floor, would have been used to store ice taken from the lake in winter for use in the Manor House kitchen throughout the year. During the Second World War, the field on which the ice house is situated was used as a prison camp for interned Germans. It was capped in 1963 on health and safety grounds and then concealed under an earth mound. It is No.40 on a list of 64 known ice houses in Kent, according to English Heritage.he meadow around it, has many meadow plants growing within it including Dog Daisies, buttercups and the (uncommon) Hay Rattle. This small plant has yellow flowers, whose ripe seeds rattle in the plant - when dry.
Abbey Field and Chestnut Paddocks - two larger fields (to the west of the estate) used mainly for grazing cattle during various parts of the year, helping promote further wildlife and plant life diversity within the park. Chestnut Paddocks takes its name from a large group of ancient Sweet Chestnut trees growing near the middle of the field.
Adjacent to the country park is St Leonard's Tower.
The park also is acreddited with a Green Flag Award by Natural England.

Medway Megaliths - The Coldrum Long Barrow

Coldrum Long barrow is the least-damaged megalithic long barrow in Kent and takes its name from the now demolished Coldrum Lodge Farm.
The Medway megaliths are the oldest prehistoric monuments in Britain
They show that the Medway valley had pioneering farming communities, particularly in the early Neolithic era.
This was when the first domestic animals and cereals were introduced
It is possible the name 'Coldrum' derived from the old Cornish word 'Galdrum' which means 'place of enchantments'. Owned in perpetuity by us since 1926 in memorial of Benjamin Harrison, an Ightham historian, this 6,000 year-old burial chamber is the only one of those originally present in the Medway Valley to remain virtually intact.
Every year, on the 1 May at dawn the Hartley Morris Men visit the stones to 'sing up the sun'.
This consists of performing a number of dances within the stones on top of the barrow, followed by a song usually performed at the base of the stones.
There are three elements to the monument: the rectangular mound, which is shorter than is usual in long barrows and aligned east to west, a rectangular burial chamber at the eastern end, and the sarsens (blocks of local Kentish sandstone) surrounding the four sides.
One of the sarsen stones at the western end of the monument could have been used for polishing stone axes. The burial chamber may have been divided into two compartments and capped with a stone slab or headstone.
More extensive examination of the chamber in 1910 recovered the bones of an estimated 22 men, women and children plus a sherd of pottery and a flint saw, and further bones were found during excavations in 1922.
People have been investigating this monument since the early 1800s. The stones are no longer in their original positions, so it was at first believed to be a stone circle.
Some poorly recorded excavation occurred in 1856, when some pot fragments were found. Benjamin Harrison and Flinders Petrie, produced drawings in the late 19th century.
Many more individuals may originally have been buried within the chamber, but damage to the monument during the medieval period has probably removed much of the evidence.
