Places to see in ( Bamberg - Germany ) St Martin
The Martin Church in Bamberg is the St. Martin consecrated Catholic church in the city center. On the grounds of the Jesuit College with the St. Martin's Church were from 1248 the monastery and church of the Carmelite Order . In 1589, this place was given in exchange to the seminary of the diocese of Bamberg . The Carmelite Order moved to the since 1548 vacant former Cistercian monastery of St. Mary et Theodore on Lower Kaulberg. This monastery still exists.
After the Jesuit call and their entry in 1611, they took over the former Carmelite convent. After acquiring several properties on the market, the geostete church of the former Carmelite monastery was demolished and 1686 began the construction of a new church. The chancel of the present church has been restored and is located approximately in the place of the choir of the Carmelite Church. Master builders were the brothers Georg and Leonhard Dientzenhofer . Georg Dientzenhofer was hired for this purpose from Prague. After George's death, his brother Leonhard took over the construction management.
Within seven years, the giant construction was completed. With him began the Dientzenhofer era of Franconian Baroque , to the z. These include the Neue Residenz , the monasteries Banz , Ebrach and Michelsberg , Schloss Pommersfelden and many other buildings. In 1693 the church was dedicated to the name of Jesus. With the completion of the church tower in 1696, the foundation stone for the Jesuit College was laid at the same time.
After the secularization in 1804, the Jesuit church became the parish church, got the patronage of the demolished church of St. Martin, which stood on the Maxplatz, and it has since been the parish church of the lower city. Due to structural damage, the church is to be renovated (after a temporary closure in 2012) from autumn 2013, for which two to three years are estimated.
The east facade of the church of St. Martin has two floors with a Risalitgiebel and the facade Figures Jesus, Sebastian, Maria and Lawrence and has as a model the mother church of the Jesuit Il Gesù in Rome. This becomes clear in the following pictures. The position of the tower in the choir apex is a characteristic feature of the Jesuit church building.

Michaelsberg Abbey or Michelsberg Abbey, also St. Michael's Abbey, Bamberg is a former Benedictine monastery in Bamberg in Bavaria, Germany. After its dissolution in 1803 the buildings were used for the almshouse Vereinigtes Katharinen- und Elisabethen-Spital, which is still there as a retirement home. The former abbey church remains in use as the Michaelskirche.
The buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Town of Bamberg. As of 2016 and for the foreseeable future, the church is closed for repairs. The abbey gave its name to the Michaelsberg, one of the hills of Bamberg, overlooking the town. With Bamberg Cathedral and the monasteries of St. Stephan and St. Gangolf it formed part of a T-shaped cross in Bamberg's topography.
The hill is the most prominent spur of the Steigerwald in the municipal area and with its steep eastern decline towards the Regnitz is significantly higher than the Domberg. This contributes to the dominant effect of the abbey buildings. The hill was inhabited before the abbey was founded. Excavations have uncovered massive walls and a moat from the 10th century.
Heinrich supported the abbey with rich gifts, including properties. Three books with which the abbey was initially endowed are still in the Staatsbibliothek Bamberg. The abbey followed the Hirsau Reforms, which also resulted in the building of a new church. The chronicler and author Frutolf of Michelsberg was prior here until his death in 1103. The abbey flourished under Bishop Otto (d. 1139), whose burial in the abbey church and subsequent canonisation in 1189, together with the papal protection granted to the abbey in 1251, was of enormous advantage in increasing the independence of the abbey from the bishops.
Due to its exposed location on top of the hill, the former abbey buildings are visible from many places in Bamberg. The structures enhance the impact on the viewer by their bulk. The Wirtschaftsgebäude and living quarters built during the Baroque period from massive sandstone surround the substantial two-spired church. In turn they are enveloped by the terrace gardens which surround the abbey on three sides. The palace-like three-storied main wing faces north, towards the Main.

Weltkulturerbe Bamberg, Kaiserdom - Obere Pfarre - Martinskirche

Like Rome, Bamberg sits on seven hills, though these are lush, green Bavarian ones. You’ll find all sorts of architecture here, so enjoy exploring the cobbled streets. Plenty of shopping and museums await you, as do nine different breweries. The city loves markets and festivals, especially around Christmas.
Bamberg is a town in northern Bavaria, Germany, laid out over 7 hills where the Regnitz and Main rivers meet. Its old town preserves structures from the 11th to 19th centuries including the muraled Altes Rathaus, which occupies an island in the Regnitz reached by arched bridges. The Romanesque Bamberg Cathedral, begun in the 11th century, features 4 towers and numerous stone carvings.
