St. Mary's Cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tokyo. It is located in the Sekiguchi neighborhood of Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan.
The original wooden structure, constructed in 1899 in the Gothic style, was destroyed during the air raids on Tokyo during World War II. The present church, designed by Kenzo Tange, was completed in 1964. Tange was assisted by Wilhelm Schlombs, architect to the Archdiocese of Cologne, construction engineer Yoshikatsu Tsuboi, who had worked with Tange on previous projects, and Swiss architect Max Lechner.
The layout of the building is in the form of a cross, from which eight hyperbolic parabolas rise in a manner similar to a contemporary landmark cathedral located in San Francisco, also referred to as St. Mary's Cathedral. The parabolas open upwards to form a cross of light, which continues vertically along the length of the four facades. To this rhomboid volume other secondary constructions are added, including the baptistry and the baptismal font. The rectangular shapes contrast with the symbolic character of the cathedral. The bell tower is 61.6 m (202 ft) high, standing a short distance away from the main building. The exterior cladding is made of stainless steel. In 2004 a large organ built by Italian firm Mascioni was installed.

Pope to meet with young Japanese at cathedral built on the ashes of WWII
Tokyo, Nov 24 (EFE).- Pope Francis will meet members of Japan’s youth at the resplendent Tokyo Cathedral, a temple that symbolizes the country’s rebirth as it was erected on the ashes left by the bombings during the Second World War.
It is the second time that St Mary’s, in the Bunkyo district of the Japanese capital city, will be the venue for such a meeting, after Pope John Paul II’s appearance at the cathedral 38 years ago on the last papal visit to Japan. (Camera: YOKO KANEKO. Editor: NATTAKARN JEAMRUGEEKUL).

東京カテドラル聖マリア大聖堂 St Mary's Cathedral,Tokyo
Site in the a little way Sekiguchidai city had the Holy Mother temple which was built formerly in 1899 to Tokyo Mejiro and it became the center of the church activity of the University of Tokyo eparchy but had burned down in the war damage in 1945.
As the revival plan, an invited design competition was done and by the design of elected Kenzou Tange, Tokyo cathedral Virgin Mary cathedral was reconstructed in December, 1964.

Visiting Gokoku ji, Temple in Otsuka, Bunkyo, Tokyo 112 0012, Japan
Gokoku-ji (護国寺?) is a Shingon Buddhist temple in Tokyo's Bunkyō.
This Buddhist temple was established by the fifth shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, who dedicated it to his mother. It is notable for surviving the American air raids during World War II, whereas most other historical sites in Tokyo were turned into rubble. For more info, visit this link:

Exploring Tokyo’s Otsuka & Ikebukuro Districts | Japan Travel Guide
This is my first Travel Vlog.
Filmed in Tokyo of June of 2017, I take you on a tour throughout the vibrant neighbourhoods of Otskuka and Ikebekuru, where I stayed during that time.
In this city, the summer temperatures often hover above 35 degrees celsius, before factoring in the humidity. If you’re not used to this heat, I guarantee that nothing you’ve experienced really prepares you for it. Bring water and pack an umbrella if you can.
Over the coming weeks, I learned to adjust my routine by avoiding midday walks which is when the sun is at its harshest. I would begin the day as early as I could, dodge the sun by afternoon by hiding indoors and returning outside post 4 or 5pm.
Along the way, I reveal some useful Tokyo travel tidbits and take you on a mini adventure to seek out two beautiful structures that caught my eyes while on the subway.
