St Mary's islands are known for their distinctive
geological formation of the hexagonal columns
of rock made of basalt.
Geological studies indicate that these islands were
created at around 88 million years ago when
Madagascar and Africa separated from India.

these Islands on his journey from Portugal and named one of these

St Mary's Island is one of the only four Geological

declared by the Geological Survey of India.

St. Mary's Islands, also known as Coconut Island and Thonsepar, are a set of four small islands in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Malpe in Udupi, Karnataka, India. They are known for their distinctive geological formation of columnar basaltic lava (pictured).[1]
Scientific studies indicate that the basalt of the St. Mary's Islands was formed by sub-aerial subvolcanic activity, because at that time Madagascar was attached to India. The rifting of Madagascar took place around 88 million years ago.[2]

The monument is considered an important site for Geo Tourism.

Malpe Beach, St. Marys Island, Udupi, Karnataka, India
St Mary’s Island, also known as Coconut Island, can be found in the Arabian Sea off Udupi, Karnataka, India. It is well known for its distinctive geological rock formation of columnar Basaltic lava. The only way to get to the island is by boat from Malpe Beach. It is a 5 or 6 km distance from the mainland. It took us 30 minutes to reach there and cost us 400 Rs per person. Visitors are not allowed to take plastic bottles. You can buy fresh coconut water on the island. There is no habitation on the island

Take your shoes and sneakers off before you land on the island as you may lose your foot wear in the water. There is a souvenir shop that sells ornamental items and jewelry made with local shells. Try to not stay back on the island as there is no electricity. The climate is hot, and they should make more use of solar lights than is presently the case.

Malpe Beach has its own tourist attractions and water sports activities. There are lots of seafood restaurants. We went to Karavali restaurant where you can make use of the bathroom facility.

One of the best beach in South India.Malpe beach Karnataka and st.Mary's Island is a must visit when you are planning for coastal Karnataka.
Boat ride to island takes half hour in one way direction.fare for to and fro journey is 300 inr.
Udupi is wel connected by train to mumbai,delhi,ernakulam.you can drive from Bengaluru to udupi in 9 hours.
Nearest airport is Mangalore airport around 60 km.
