Beautiful St. Mary in the Mtns- Virginia City By Robert Scott- Anchorage, AK.
This is footage of the Beautiful Church in Virginia City, Nevada.
St. Mary Of The Mountains. Douglas Abbott would love this place. This church was built during the late 1800s and literally pierces the sky with majestic spires. Parishioners enter through three arched doorways and rose-colored windows shed a heavenly light throughout the services. The solid-cast silver bell can be heard throughout the little town announcing the beginning of Mass. The splendid Gothic altar is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. Whatever religion you may be, you will appreciate the beauty in this house of God. Very quiet, tranquil....
Virginia City, Nevada
The opening shot flies over the steel headframe (built 1913) and shaft of the New York Mine in Gold Hill, Nevada. At 0:43 into the program we arrive in Virginia City, Nevada with a view overlooking the southern portion of the town. Looking northeast, we can see St. Mary in the Mountains Catholic church (built 1876). At 0:50 into the program, we are on approach to Virginia City, this time overflying the Mackay Mansion Museum (right foreground), built in 1859 by George Hearst to house the mining offices of the Gould & Curry mines. At 1:06 into the program, our flight takes us above C Street (Nevada State Route 341) to where the Virginia City Chamber of Commerce keeps their offices in what used to be the bullion car of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. At 1:14 into the program, we continue our overflight along C Street, passing over the bullion car, and continuing on towards the Storey County District Courthouse, and Piper’s Opera House (background). At 1:36 into the program, our flight over Virginia City provides spectacular views of St. Mary in the Mountains. At 1:47 into the program, we enjoy a flight over the beautifully restored Savage Mansion. Still a mining office today, the Savage Mansion hosted then former president Ulysses S. Grant in 1879. At 1:59 into the program, the penultimate shot drifts towards B Street from the southeast, flying towards the Courthouse. At the center of the picture, we can see A Street midway between Taylor and Union streets, the point of origin of the Great Fire of Tuesday 26 October 1875 which, according to Dan DeQuille's History of the Big Bonanza”, burnt a swath through the city half a mile square.

St. Mary's In The Mountains - Part 4 Underneath The Church Holds Many Relics Of The Past
The final part of the investigation was spent in the wine cellar, museum, private chambers and the underground area of the church. There are strange finds in the cellar such as gravestones but also many holy artifacts some of them were salvaged from the 1800s when this church burnt down others come from elsewhere. We did get EMF readings the first ones were from the lights NOT ghost. The other ones you hear however are genuine readings thus we feel that many spirits are connected to the clothing and artifacts found throughout the lower floor.

Mountain View Cemetery - The Journey Through Millionaires Row
Mountain View Cemetery was erected by east bay pioneers in 1863 within the city of Oakland after the city graveyard did not have a enough room to sustain the dearly departed. The cemetery would be designed by Frederick Law Olmsted who believed that man and nature should be in harmony. Today it is over 200 acres, contains nearly 200k interments, gardens, chapels, mausoleums, crypts, Civil War, Chinese and Pioneers sections all within the San Gabriel Mountains. The most famous area of the cemetery is a place called The Millionaires Row which contains some of the most prominent, powerful and wealthy men who made an impact in the state of California. This is a grandiose cemetery one of the finest in the state full of nature, history and lore. Also buried here is Black Dahlia whose murder is still till this day one of the oldest cold cases in LA after her death she was buried here. This is one of the most gorgeous cemeteries in California with cityscapes of Oakland and even the bay on a clear day. This video does not do this place justice over 200 thousand are interred here so much to see in Oakland's most haunted burial ground. If you want to delve more into this cemetery. This is the one place that is a home away from a home in Oakland its pristine, beautiful, serene and history lurks around every turn. Church of the Visitation - Westphalia, Texas
(Audio begins at 15 seconds)
Texas has lost a historical and architectural gem. On Monday July 29, 2019 The Church Of The Visitation in Westphalia burned to the ground. The call came in at 7:55 AM reporting that smoke could be seen from the bell tower, indicating the structure was already engulfed.
The church was seeped in history: Built in cooperation by many of the parishioners, it was imbued with the threads of multiculturalism that make up our great state and our nation. For instance, all of the 20 stained glass windows were shipped from Germany while the three cast-iron bells were donated by pioneer families.
On the National Registry of Historic Places, it also has personal connection to our family. My husband's parents were married there and more recently we all attended services and were very encouraged and moved by Father Edwin Kagoo. My thoughts are with those who this may affect and I am saddened by the loss but hoping with some help that the church can be reconstructed.
Please read the unique history below if you want to learn more and review this 15-min. video of the entire church to enjoy/remember its beauty, character, and its unique details.
(from the church's website)
History of Our Parish:
Soon after they settled in the area, Westphalia's first families named their community after the Westphalia province in Germany from which many of them had immigrated. They began having Sunday prayer meetings in the home of Theodore Rabroker, the first settler. These were times of worship and fellowship, and because they were pleased with the soil and location, the German natives purchased 100 acres of land for a church and school. Their efforts were thwarted, however, when the first two structures were destroyed by storms in the early 1880s. During a meeting on Christmas Eve in 1893, Rev. Michael Heintzelman recommended building a new and larger church. After Rev. H M. Simoni drew the plans and Andreus Fuchs of Tours was hired as contractor, work began shortly after the new year. All the stone for the foundation was shipped by rail to Lott from a quarry in Muldoon, Texas, and the timber was brought from Waco. Parishioners volunteered to haul, without charge, all building materials from the nearest railroad. As many as 80 loads were hauled with wagons from Lott in one day - a distance of eight miles.
The church was designed in the shape of a Latin cross with a bell tower on each side of its center area; it measures 120 feet long and 52 feet wide. To tolerate a strong wind, six inches of sway was built into the towers. The towers are covered with copper sheeting and each is topped with a nine-foot stainless steel cross. The middle section carries a six-foot cross.
The church contains more than 20 stained glass windows, all shipped to Westphalia from Germany. The largest stained glass window is directly behind the main altar and depicts the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin. The two side windows depict images of St Monica and the Archangel Michael. The main altar was purchased for $700 and was shipped from Germany. The 11-foot pews are pine, and are hand planed and hand joined with screws.
Several pioneer families donated three large bells in the towers. Interior painting and decorations were originally done by H. A. Sokolowski, an artist from Bernardo Prairie, Texas.
The Church of Visitation was completed in February of 1895 at a cost of $8,000, as most of the carpentry was done by parishioners. The Most Rev. N. A. Gallagher, D.D., Bishop of Galveston, dedicated the new structure on May 23, 1895.
In 1914, a large, arched, dome-shaped structure was added to the east end of the building, enlarging the sanctuary.
Donated by Mrs. Theresia Bockholt, the large pipe organ was built in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1914 by Kilgen and Son, Inc. The choir loft was enlarged and the organ was installed in March of 1921. It was refurbished in 1979 and is played each Sunday as well as on special occasions.
On December 31, 1978, the historical Church of the Visitation, one of the largest wooden churches in the State of Texas, received official recognition with the erection of a Texas Historical Marker. On May 15, 1996, the community was recognized as a Rural Historic District, which encompasses 5,500 acres of farmland, the church, and many other historic sites in the area. The district is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The religious character of the community is evidenced from the 14 priests and 38 sisters who originated from the community. Today, the parish consists of 185 families with 500 parishioners. Just as in the beginning, the church continues to be the center of all community activities. The annual homecoming and picnic is held the second Sunday of October each year with a chicken and sausage meal along with games and fun for the entire family. This event provides the major support for the church. Contributions are always accepted to defray expenses of maintaining this historic church.
