St. Michael's Church Organ, Charleston (George Washington Saw it)
!! 1768 not 1678!!
This program is funded in part by the Metropolitan Arts Council which receives support from the City of Greenville, BMW Manufacturing Company, Michelin North America, Inc., SEW Eurodrive and the South Carolina Arts Commission.
We visited a church steeped in history and a rather nice steeple. Matthew Wilkinson the Organist and director there was kind enough of to play a lot of Bach. The air condition was not working at the time and the organ tuner who was there the night before did not promise anything. If you know how humid it can get in Charleston in the summer...we visited on one of the worst days. Besides the Kenneth Jones Organ and the lovely Snetzler case. There is a beautiful Bosendorfer grand right next to the organ, that you can barely make out in one of the shots.
George Washington and Robert e Lee both sat (at different times obviously) in Pew 43 and heard organ music (Probably just Washington because the organ was dismantled during the Civil War) coming from the Old Snetzler organ
An Austin Organ of 1910 replaced it. Does anyone know what happened to the Snetzler's pipes, etc? There is little information about its fate on the OHS page.
This is episode 16 of Pipe Organs of SC,

Setting the time On the tower clock at St. Michael's Episopal Curch in Charleston, SC
Daniel Jeffries is setting the time on the Ainsworth-Thwaites tower clock in the Belfry of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC. The clock was installed in 1764 and is thought to be the oldest tower clock still in constant use in the United States. The tune of the chimes are used in many modern Grandfather clocks sold today. The clock has been converted to auto-wind but was once wound by hand daily. The chime hammers are in the up or off position in this video.
Pipe Organs of Historic St. Philip's Church, Charleston
Hello this is Episode 15 of Pipe Organs of SC
I was able to play two instruments during a mini vacation in Charleston. I would love to do more, so if any of you can put me in contact with some organists that would be great.
This program is funded in part by the Metropolitan Arts Council which receives support from the City of Greenville, BMW Manufacturing Company, Michelin North America, Inc., SEW Eurodrive and the South Carolina Arts Commission.
Subscribe to the Channel. Please note due to a failure of a piece of equipment that has since been replaced. This video does not have the typically great audio of our content. I almost did not want to upload it. However I took a hit and purchased what I hope is a nicer piece of equipment.
Thanks to St. Philip's church and Joe Hethcox for hosting us quite on the fly.
This video was not initially scheduled but thankfully I had most of my gear working, note the absence of the tripod during the chapel organ visit

Charleston Churches Uniting In Prayer, September 22, 2013
On September 22, 2013, the Historic Churches of Charleston Uniting in Prayer for the Church and the United States was held in Washington Square Park in downtown Charleston as a major step forward for the expression of Christian faith in the public square. At this precarious and confusing time in our national life, believers across Charleston united at Washington Square Park adjacent to the Four Corners of Law for a positive example of the freedom to exercise religion in the public square. This event included worship, prayer and a proclamation of God's sovereignty, truth, mercy and love for the Church and the United States for such a time as this. Following the event, GLD's Executive Director, Rev. Christian Zebley, preached the evening homily at St. Michael's Church, a key partner in the prayer event. Rev. Zebley preached on Habbakuk 3:2 on the subject of revival and awakening through the power of corporate prayer.

Charleston is the oldest and second-largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, the county seat of Charleston County,[3] and the principal city in the Charleston–North Charleston–Summerville Metropolitan Statistical Area.[4] The city lies just south of the geographical midpoint of South Carolina's coastline and is located on Charleston Harbor, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean formed by the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper rivers, or, as is locally expressed, where the Cooper and Ashley Rivers come together to form the Atlantic Ocean.
Founded in 1670 as Charles Town in honor of King Charles II of England, Charleston adopted its present name in 1783.[5] It moved to its present location on Oyster Point in 1680 from a location on the west bank of the Ashley River known as Albemarle Point. By 1690, Charles Town was the fifth-largest city in North America,[6] and it remained among the ten largest cities in the United States through the 1840 census.[7] With a 2010 census population of 120,083[8] (and a 2014 estimate of 130,113), current trends put Charleston as the fastest-growing municipality in South Carolina. The population of the Charleston Metropolitan area, comprising Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties, was counted by the 2014 estimate at 727,689 – the third largest in the state – and the 78th-largest metropolitan statistical area in the United States.
Known for its rich history, well-preserved architecture, distinguished restaurants, and mannerly people, Charleston has received a large number of accolades, including America's Most Friendly [City] by Travel + Leisure in 2011 and in 2013 and 2014 by Condé Nast Traveler,[9][10] and also the most polite and hospitable city in America by Southern Living magazine.
