Nikolai Church has transformed repeatedly during its history. Today the distinctive double tower dominates the skyline. Constructed in red brick at the end of the 19th century, bombing raids in 1944 destroy the Nikolai Church and district almost completely. The spires, roof and parts of the vault are lost. In 1969, the building passes to the Berlin municipal authorities, and both church and municipal rooms are reconstructed in the 80s. The reconstruction of Berlin's 750-year old monument is completed in 1987. If you enter Nikolai Church today, you can once again marvel at the Gothic interior with its distinctive, colourful roof.
In the course of its history, the church has not only been a place of Christian worship but also serves the citizens of Berlin as a municipal centre. Throughout history, it has been the scene of important historical events. Paul Gerhardt, theologian and author of several famous hymns, is rectorate here in the 17th century. 1809 sees the first municipal decrees passed in the church. The first freely elected public representatives are sworn in here in 1991 to celebratory peals of the church bells. Speaking of music: Nikolai remains a place for music lovers, holding regular organ concerts.
From Nikolai Church it is about 10 minutes on foot to Cölln, Berlin's former sister city. You need only cross the Spree river to reach Petriplatz, the historic centre of Berlin dating to the Middle Ages. In 2006, archaeologists discover the foundations of five churches under Petriplatz. The most ancient is founded around 1200. Archaeologists discover 500 year old tombs and more than 3,700 skeletons next to the church. Between 2006 and 2009, architects uncover an old Latin school underneath the foundation walls of the Cöllner St. Peter's Church and the Cöllner Town Hall. The current sacred building is a meeting place for Christians, Jews and Muslims; a symbol of peaceful exchanges between religions.
Take the M48 bus and stop at the Nikolai quarter. Alternatively, take subway line U2 to Alexanderplatz. From here, it is a short walk down Town Hall Road to St. Nicholas Church. With the Berlin WelcomeCard you will receive a 40% discount on admission. Entry is free with a Berlin Museum pass. As one of Berlin's City Museums, entry to St. Nicholas is free every first Wednesday of the month. Entry is also free for children and young people under 18 years old. The Museum is open on Mondays. Several public tours take place during the week.

Hamburg, Germany - Saint Nicholas' Church (2018)
The Gothic Revival Church of St. Nicholas (German: St.-Nikolai-Kirche) was formerly one of the five Lutheran Hauptkirchen (main churches) in the city of Hamburg. Bombing of Hamburg in World War II destroyed the bulk of the church and its rubble was removed leaving its crypt, its site and tall spired tower, largely hollow, save for a large set of bells, together serving as a memorial and an important architectural landmark. When Hamburg residents mention the Nikolaikirche, it is generally to this church that they are referring, and not the new Hauptkirche dedicated to Saint Nicholas, in the Harvestehude district.
The church was the tallest building in the world from 1874 to 1876 and is the second-tallest structure in Hamburg. Since 2005, an elevator has been installed to a 75.3 metre-high platform.
Hamburg, officially the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, is the second-largest city of Germany as well as one of the country's 16 constituent states, with a population of roughly 1.8 million people. The city lies at the core of the Hamburg Metropolitan Region which spreads across four German federal states and is home to more than 5 million people.
The official name reflects Hamburg's history as a member of the medieval Hanseatic League, a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire, a city-state and one of the 16 states of Germany. Before the 1871 Unification of Germany, it was a fully sovereign state. Prior to the constitutional changes in 1919 it formed a civic republic headed constitutionally by a class of hereditary grand burghers or Hanseaten. The city has repeatedly been beset by disasters such as the Great Fire of Hamburg, exceptional coastal flooding and military conflicts including World War II bombing raids. Historians remark that the city has managed to recover and emerge wealthier after each catastrophe.
Situated on the river Elbe, Hamburg is home to Europe's second-largest port and a broad corporate base. In media, the major regional broadcasting firm NDR, the printing and publishing firm Gruner + Jahr and the newspapers Der Spiegel and Die Zeit are based in the city. Hamburg remains an important financial center, the seat of Germany's oldest stock exchange and the world's oldest merchant bank, Berenberg Bank. Media, commercial, logistical, and industrial firms with significant locations in the city include multinationals Airbus, Blohm + Voss, Aurubis, Beiersdorf, and Unilever.
The city is a forum for and has specialists in world economics and international law with such consular and diplomatic missions as the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the EU-LAC Foundation, and the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning. In recent years, the city has played host to multipartite international political conferences and summits such as Europe and China and the G20. Former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, who governed Germany for eight years, came from Hamburg.
The city is a major international and domestic tourist destination. It ranked 18th in the world for livability in 2016. The Speicherstadt and Kontorhausviertel were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2015.
Hamburg is a major European science, research, and education hub, with several universities and institutions. Among its most notable cultural venues are the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle concert halls. It gave birth to movements like Hamburger Schule and paved the way for bands including The Beatles. Hamburg is also known for several theatres and a variety of musical shows. St. Pauli's Reeperbahn is among the best-known European entertainment districts.

Sechster Dezember, Nikolaustag: ein kleiner Festtag für Kinder und Erwachsene. Doch die wenigsten Menschen wissen noch, woher die Ursprünge dieses Tages kommen aus der Türkei, aus dem Ort Myra (heute: Demre). Von dort stammt der echte Nikolaus, Bischof Nikolaus von Myra. Mit einer Andacht vor der mittelalterlichen Nikolaikirche in Berlin-Mitte und einem in Kirchspiel-Tradition gehaltenen Gespräch zwischen Berlins Generalsuperintendenten Ralf Meister und dem Nikolaus wurde am 6.12.2009 an diese prägende Heiligenfigur erinnert.
„Unser Anliegen ist es, direkt an die geschichtlichen Quellen zu gehen, so Ralf Meister, „bewusst haben wir uns dafür entschieden, vor einer der traditionsreichsten Kirchen der Stadt Berlin eine Andacht zu halten. Wir wollen diesen Ort geistlich prägen. Die Nikolaikirche ist nicht mehr im Besitz der Kirche und wird seit den 80er Jahren von der Stadt als Museum und Veranstaltungsort genutzt. Die Nikolaikirche ist die älteste Kirche Berlins. Sie befindet sich in Berlin-Mitte im Nikolaiviertel zwischen Spandauer Straße, Rathausstraße, Spree und Mühlendamm.
Bertold Höcker, Superintendent des Kirchenkreises Berlin Stadtmitte, hat für diese Andacht die Rolle des Bischof Nikolaus übernommen. Gekleidet in traditionsreiche liturgische Gewänder erinnerte er so die Person und das Leben des Nikolaus von Myra.
Um die Brücke zur Gegenwart zu schlagen, fuhr eine Gruppe Motorradfahrer in Nikolausmänteln mit ihren Maschinen vor die Kirche. Für die Kinder gab es Schokoladennikoläuse, und die Gemeinde sang begleitet vom Posaunenchor Adventslieder. Ebenfalls dabei war tatkräftig der VCP Berlin-Brandenburg.
Die Andacht war eine Veranstaltung der Evangelischen Kirche Berlin-Brandenburg-schlesische Oberlausitz.
Mitwirkende: Generalsuperintendent Ralf Meister, Superintendent Berthold Höcker, der Posaunenchor der Advent-Zachäusgemeinde unter Leitung von Hanna Pflug, Motorradfahrer der Initiative Christ und Motorrad, Pfadfinder des Verbandes Christlicher Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder Land Berlin-Brandenburg. Herzlichen Dank allen Ehrenamtlichen für die Unterstützung. The Nikolaikirche (German for church of Saint Nicholas) is the oldest church in Berlin, the capital of Germany. The church is located in the eastern part of central Berlin, the borough of Mitte. The area around the church, bounded by Spandauer Straße, Rathausstraße, the River Spree and Mühlendamm, is known as the Nikolaiviertel, and is an area of restored mediaeval buildings (in some cases recent imitations). The church was built between 1220 and 1230, and is thus, along with the Marienkirche at Alexanderplatz not far away, the oldest church in Berlin.

Église romane à l'origine, elle fut batie en l'honneur de Saint Nicolas, le saint-patron des commerçants, car une grande partie des premiers berlinois appartenaient à cette corporation. L'édifice fut remaniée à plusieurs reprises pour recevoir en 1380 son chœur gothique, et en 1480 ses nefs typiques d'église-halle.

Van dit stenen gebouw is het fundament van de door twee torens geflankeerde façade van de huidige kerk over, die dateert uit 1300. Het priesterverblijf is voltooid in 1402, maar aan de kerk zelf is tot halverwege de 15de eeuw gewerkt. Het resultaat was een gotische bakstenen hallenkerk, waarin een koor met een omgang en een reeks lage kapellen was gebouwd.

Hi, my name's Jill, and I'm your personal guide. Along with MyWoWo, I'd like to welcome you to one of the Wonders of the World: Nikolaikirche.
Nikolaikirche, the Church of St. Nicholas, is the oldest church in Berlin, located in the heart of the Old Town, in the little neighborhood of Nikolaiviertel, with its characteristic maze of narrow, little, stone paved streets. It was here that the fishing village of Berlin was established and which, together with the village of Cölln, gave rise to the Berlin we know today.
The Catholic church was built between 1220 and 1230, but in 1539, following the Reformation, it became a Lutheran church. This building hosted the first Lutheran religious service in the entire region, immediately after the conversion of Joachim II Hector of Brandenburg.
Most of the buildings in this old neighborhood, like others, were rebuilt in the 1980s, when the government of the German Democratic Republic finally decided, on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the city's foundation, to rebuild the area that had been devastated by the bombing during the Second World War.
This work also included the reconstruction of the Church of St. Nicholas, which had lost its roof and the upper part of the two towers…
