Russia: Belogorsky St. Nicholas Orthodox Missionary Monastery Cathedral
Russians are awesome - we love Russia:
Belogorsky St. Nicholas Orthodox Missionary Monastery Cathedral or Belaya Gora (White Mountain) Monastery is the biggest cathedral in the Urals, situated 120 km from Perm and 80 km from Kungur.
Father Igumen Varlaam was the builder and first Abbot of the Belogorsky St. Nicholas Orthodox Missionary Monastery Cathedral. It was constructed as a missionary church by the Russian Orthodox Church within an area where many Russian Orthodox Old-Rite Church congregations were located.
Construction of the monastery church began in 1902 and it was consecrated in June of 1917. Four hundred (400) monks lived at the monastery in 1917. Their daily schedule was prayers from 3 to 6 AM, then work. Lunch was 11:30 to noon, then 2 hours of rest. Return to work from 2 to 5. Last service was the day was from 6 to 10 PM.
In 1914 the Grand Duchess Elisabeth Phedorovna Romanova visited the monastery.
The monastery was captured during the Russian Revolution by the Red Army in October 1917. Fighting left some monks dead and others were deported. The Abbot of the monastery was tortured to death in 1918 and the monastery was converted into a mental hospital. The great bells of the monastery were broken into pieces with sledge hammers and the artwork of the monastery was largely destroyed.
The monastery was used as a hospital for shell shocked soldiers and civilians during and after the Second World War. A mental patient burnt off the roof of the monastery church in 1979 and the building was abandoned.
A dedicated group of eight monks rushed to stablize the building in 1993 and it has been undergoing restoration ever since that year.
North 57 degrees 23.542' and East 56 degrees 13.787' at an elevation of 465 meters. Especially in winter months, Belaya Gora looks unusually beautiful. From the elevation, one has a 360 degree view over the typical vast forest landscape of the Urals.

The Cathedral of Irkutsk - The Cathedral of the Icon of the Mother of God of Kazan was a huge Byzantine style four-pillared five-cupola place of worship. The main building being connected by a passage to the Cathedral Bell-tower.
For almost half a century, the idea of a great cathedral for Irkutsk was discussed. Finally, in 1849, , the Irkutsk millionaire-gold miner Evfimiy Andreevich Kuznetsov made a large donation of 250 thousand rubles. However, it took until April 17, 1875, on the birthday of Emperor Alexander II, for the solemn laying of the foundation stone. Almost from the beginning of the project disagreements arose between the Holy Synod and the architect, V.A. Kudelsky.....This finally led to his dismissal from the works.
Engineer-captain Mitrofan Nilovich Ogon-Dogonovsky, who compiled a new project of the Kazan Cathedral, was invited to supervise the construction of the cathedral. The facade of the cathedral was repeatedly adjusted, because it did not satisfy the metropolitan authorities in artistic terms. Finally, Emperor III wrote, annoyingly I agree, it's a little better, but not particularly tasteful. However, now there's nothing to be done.....
By June 1879, the walls of the cathedral were erected to the height of the second tier of windows, when a terrible fire destroyed half of the city and suspended the construction of the cathedral for six years.
After the fire, the engineer-architect Baron Heinrich Vladimirovich Rozen was invited to lead the works. The project was approved by the St. Petersburg Technical Committee with a resolution that the facade of the cathedral in its last form was more elegant in artistic terms.
The construction of the Cathedral was completed, finally, in 1894. In total, 904,025 rubles 42 ½ kopecks were spent for the construction and establishment of church utensils........
The consecration of the main chapel in the name of the icon of Kazan Mother of God took place on January 25, 1894. From the end of January until the end of August 1894, Archbishop Tikhon consistently consecrated the remaining altars of the new cathedral. In all, there were six altars in the church: the main one was in the name of the icon of the Kazan Mother of God; the right - Saint and Miracle-worker Nicholas; the left is the St. Evfimiya of Novgorod and St. Euphemia; on the right choirs - St. Tikhon of Zadonsk and St. Mitrofan of Voronezh; on the left choirs - St. Innocent of Irkutsk and the Monk Benjamin Caves and a cave shrine in the name of the Last Judgment of the Lord.
Irkutsk Kazan Cathedral was one of the largest religious buildings in Russia. It accommodated five thousand worshipers, and its height reached 60 meters (from the ground level to the top of the cross of the main dome, not including the underground burial vault).

After the October Revolution, in conditions of persecution and terror against the church, the life of the cathedral began to wain considerably. In 1919 the steam heating was destroyed and divine services began to be performed only in the warm season. The cathedral was blown up in 1932. The broken brick was used to fill the area, the level of which, after levelling off the remains of the cathedral, rose almost a metre.
In 1938, almost at the same place where the majestic Kazan Cathedral stood, began the construction of the House of Soviets.
This stark grey coloured monolith, remains to this day........

HABS Fly-through of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Juneau, Alaska
St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church was built in 1893 in Juneau, Alaska. It is the second oldest surviving Russian Orthodox church in the state, and the only octagonal example. Although constructed twenty --six years after Secretary of State William H. Seward facilitated the US purchase of Alaska from Russia, the church can be seen as closely related to the period of Russian colonization (1741-1867). St. Nicholas Church was built soon after Juneau was founded (1880) and remains one of the oldest structures in the city. According to tradition, the construction of ST. Nicholas was a joint effort of local Tlingit Indians and Serbian miners.
The documentation of St. Nicholas was the result of a collaboration between NPS Alaska Regional Office, ROSSIA Inc. (Russian Orthodox Sacred Sites in Alaska) and Heritage Documentation Programs. The church and rectory were documented using laser scanning, panoramic photography, and hand measuring in July 2013. HDP architects Mark Schara and Jeremy Mauro completed the documentation in partnership with Grant Crosby, Historical Architect, NPS Alaska Regional Office. The flythrough was created by Jeremy Mauro using pointcloud data captured in the field with a Leica C10 laser scanner. The pointcloud was colored with high dynamic range photography. The structure's relatively small footprint and plain exterior belies the spaciousness and ornamentation of the interior. Of particular note is the iconostas, which was fabricated in Russia in 1893 and shipped across the Pacific to Juneau. Most of the furniture was removed from the interior during the scanning and photography to allow for better coverage of the architectural elements.

RUSSIA: ORTHODOX CHRISTMAS
Russian/Nat
XFA
Hundreds of Russian believers prayed for good fortune in the year 2001 as Moscow's main church ushered in Orthodox Christmas on Sunday.
The service was held at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, whose reconstruction was officially declared complete this year.
The cathedral was blown up and razed to the ground on the late Soviet dictator Josef Stalin's orders in the 1930s.
Russians celebrate Christmas on January 7, which corresponds to December 25 of the Julian calendar, which is still used by the Orthodox Church.
The Russian Orthodox Church, as well as other mainstream religions, has seen revival in the past years following the collapse of the Soviet Union in which religion was effectively banned and atheism was imposed by the state.
SOUNDBITE (Russian)
People are looking for justice and constructive work. The cathedral is magnificent. We should congratulate those who built it. It's a real work of art.
