MUNICH: magnificent ART, 16th century BAROQUE church of SAINT MICHAEL (GERMANY) ⛪
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit the spectacular St Michael which is a Jesuit church in Munich, southern Germany, the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps. The style of the building had an enormous influence on Southern German early Baroque architecture.
The church was built by William V, Duke of Bavaria between 1583 and 1597 as a spiritual center for the Counter Reformation. The foundation stone was laid in 1585.
Munich, Bavaria’s capital, is home to centuries-old buildings and numerous museums. The city is known for its annual Oktoberfest celebration and its beer halls, including the famed Hofbräuhaus, founded in 1589. In the Altstadt (Old Town), central Marienplatz square contains landmarks such as Neo-Gothic Neues Rathaus (town hall), with a popular glockenspiel show that chimes and reenacts stories from the 16th century.
Germany is a Western European country with a landscape of forests, rivers, mountain ranges and North Sea beaches. It has over 2 millennia of history. Berlin, its capital, is home to art and nightlife scenes, the Brandenburg Gate and many sites relating to WWII. Munich is known for its Oktoberfest and beer halls, including the 16th-century Hofbräuhaus. Frankfurt, with its skyscrapers, houses the European Central Bank.

Visit Passau, Germany: Important St. Paul Church and St. Stephan Cathedral
There are a gazillion churches in Passau but the most important are: St. Paul (the oldest) and St. Stephan (famous organ). Organ concerts are the thing in river cruise literature but know that they only take place from April-October. No concert for us. Sigh...

Tourist attraction in Munich Germany- St Peter Church
The Church of St. Peter is one of Munich’s landmarks, the oldest parish church in the city, and is known affectionately by the locals as Alter Peter (“Old Peter”). The church stands on a hill called Petersbergl, which is the only noteworthy elevation within the Munich’s historic Old Town.
With 299 steps and a great view
If you want to enjoy a view of the entire city center from the tower of St. Peter’s parish church, you must first climb no less than 299 steps. Once you reach the top, the panoramic view of Munich’s center makes up for the effort. When the weather is very good, the view even reaches to the Alps.

Munich Germany - The Theatine Church
While exploring Munich Germany, we decided to stop in and have a look at the Theatine Church next to Odeonsplatz. After that, we headed over to Promenadeplatz to check out the shrine to Michael Jackson before making our way past St. Michael's Church and back to Neuhauser Straße.

In 2006, the council for law interpretation has stated clearly that the exit from the public institution does not mean one has renounced the beliefs. That difference is very important. The bishops will not be able to say that according to the German law the exit from the church is an exit from religious community.

The basic model was, also from (St.) Paul, that the community supports the priest. What he has, he has received from community, perhaps he also has a plot of land and few cows. That was the initial model, and not like the one in Germany, where since the 19th century the priests have been paid according to the civil servant status - regardless of who is paying them, in this case the Church.

I find it unfortunate (the taxing system in Germany). I think one should do it like for example in Italy, where every citizen pays a certain amount and can decide to whom the amount then goes.

23. SOUNDBITE (German) David Brehler, student from Munich, member of the Catholic community:
He who does not understand this connection - religion and solidarity - has parted from the church already. I can't really understand the people who exit (the Church) because of the church tax. If I I believe, I belong and I am a member of this club, the church - then I have to contribute and engage.

STORYLINE
The road to heaven is paved with money for Germany's 24 (m) million Catholics.
If they don't pay their religious taxes, they will be denied sacraments, including weddings, baptisms and funerals.
A decree issued last week by the country's bishops cast a spotlight on the longstanding practice in Germany and a handful of other European countries in which governments tax registered believers and then hand over the money to the religious institutions.
In Germany, the surcharge for Catholics, Protestants and Jews is a surcharge of up to nine percent on their income tax bills - or about 56 euro (72 US dollars) a month for a single person earning a pre-tax monthly salary of about 3,500 euro (4,500 US dollars).
For religious institutions, struggling to maintain their congregations in a secular society where the Protestant Reformation began 500 years ago, the tax revenues are vital.
The Catholic Church in Germany receives about 5 (b) billion euro (6.5 (b) billion US dollars) annually from the surcharge.
