(Ep. 14) St. Isaac's Cathedral - Museum in St. Petersburg: Tsar Events' RUSSIA SURVIVAL GUIDE
Tsar Events' RUSSIA SURVIVAL GUIDE with Maya Krivchenia: Russian museums. St. Petersburg - ST. ISAAC'S CATHEDRAL #RussiaSurvivalGuide
St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg is the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral in the city. It is the largest orthodox basilica and the fourth largest (by the volume under the cupola) cathedral in the world. It is dedicated to Saint Isaac of Dalmatia, a patron saint of Peter the Great, who had been born on the feast day of that saint.
The church on St Isaac's Square was ordered by Tsar Alexander I, to replace an earlier structure by Vincenzo Brenna, and was the fourth consecutive church standing at this place. A specially appointed commission examined several designs, including that of the French-born architect Auguste de Montferrand (1786–1858), who had studied in the atelier of Napoleon's designer, Charles Percier. Montferrand's design was criticised by some members of the commission for the dry and allegedly boring rhythm of its four identical pedimented octastyle porticos. It was also suggested that despite gigantic dimensions, the edifice would look squat and not very impressive. The members of the commission, which consisted of well-known Russian architects, were also particularly concerned by necessity to build a new huge building on the old unsecure foundation. The emperor, who favoured the ponderous Empire style of architecture, had to step in and solve the dispute in Montferrand's favour.
The cathedral took 40 years to construct, under Montferrand's direction, from 1818 to 1858. To secure the construction, the cathedral's foundation was strengthened by driving 25,000 piles into the fenland of Saint Petersburg. Innovative methods were created to erect the giant columns of the portico. The construction costs of the cathedral totalled an incredible sum of 1 000 000 gold rubles. Under the Soviet government, the building was stripped of religious trappings. In 1931, it was turned into the Museum of the History of Religion and Atheism, the dove sculpture was removed, and replaced by a Foucault pendulum. On April 12, 1931, the first public demonstration of the Foucault pendulum was held to visualize Copernicus’s theory. In 1937, the museum was transformed into the museum of the cathedral, and former collections were transferred to the Museum of the History of Religion (located in the Kazan Cathedral).
During World War II, the dome was painted over in gray to avoid attracting attention from enemy aircraft. On its top, in the skylight, a geodesical intersection point was placed, to determine the positions of German artillery batteries.
With the fall of communism, the museum was removed and regular worship activity has resumed in the cathedral, but only in the left-hand side chapel. The main body of the cathedral is used for services on feast days only.

The Peter and Paul Fortress and Cathedral , St Petersburg, Russia (Ultra 4K)
The Peter and Paul Fortress and Cathedral , St Petersburg, Russia
The Peter and Paul Cathedral is located inside the Peter and Paul Fortress along the Neva River in St. Petersburg. It is the oldest building in St. Petersburg and the second tallest after the television tower.
In the early 20th century, it was still used as a prison by the tsarist government.
Today it has been adapted as the central and most important part of the State Museum of Saint Petersburg History. The museum has gradually become virtually the sole owner of the fortress building, except the structure occupied by the Saint Petersburg Mint.

St Petersburg City Sights
You get a lot for your money in this short film Comrade.. in this short film you will see The Smolny Ensembles, Museum of Russian Political History, The Russian Cruiser Aurora, Church of the Spilled Blood / Church of Resurrection of Jesus Christ, appearance by Beethoven and a look at a few souvenir stall, if you want more information see below comrade..
The Smolny Ensemble
The Smolny ensemble includes a number of structures put up at different times. This territory on the Neva bank, opposite the Nienschanz Fortress put up by the Swedes in the 17th century, was allotted for the tar-yard (Smolianoi dvor); tar was stored and smelted there for the needs of the Admiralty.
The name of Smolny (tar) was henceforth used for the territory, though the tar-works ceased to exist in the first half of the 18th century.
In the mid-18th century a construction of the Smolny ensemble was started on the site. The oldest are the buildings of the Voskresensky (Resurrection) Novodevichiy Convent, or the Smolny Convent, as it was known among the citizens. The second to be built was the Alexandrovsky Boarding School for Girls for educating girls from middle-class families. To the south of the Smolny Convent the Smolny Boarding School for Young Ladies of Noble Birth was erected in 1806 - 8; it was designed in Russian Empire style by D.Quarenghi.
In 1917 the Smolny Broading School became the revolutionary headquarters. It was here that Lenin resided during the upheaval.
The Cruiser Aurora
The historical ship Aurora has been turned into a museum and is docked just a few hundred yards upstream from the Cabin of Peter the, opposite the St Petersburg Hotel. The cruiser, built in St. Petersburg between 1897 and 1900, took an active part in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05 and participated in the Tsusima battle, in which most of Russia's Pacific fleet was destroyed. After the war the ship was used for personnel training and during the October revolution of 1917 gave the signal (by firing a blank shot) to storm of the Winter Palace, which was being used as a residence by the democratic, but largely ineffective Provisional Government.
During World War II and the 900 day Siege of Leningrad the guns of the ship were taken down and used on the front line of the city's defenses. After the war the ship was carefully restored and used as a free museum and training ship for cadets from the nearby Nakhimov Navy School.
Church of the Spilled Blood or Church of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ
This church is known to Petersburgers as the Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood - or even just the Church on the Blood - as it marks the spot where Alexander II was fatally wounded in an assassination attempt on March 1, 1881. Designed by Alfred Parland in the style of 16th and 17th-century Russian churches, the Church of the Resurrection provides a stark (some would say jarring) contrast to its surroundings of Baroque, Classical and Modernist architecture.
Alexander II died of wounds inflicted in an attack by the terrorist group People's Will. Immediately, his heir, Alexander II, declared his intention to erect a church on the site in his father's memory, and moreover to have this church built in traditional Russian style - in distinction to what he saw as the contaminating Western influence of Petersburg.
After the Revolution, the church - despite becoming an official cathedral in 1923 - was looted. It was closed in 1932, and essentially turned into a garbage dump. Rumors abounded that the church would be torn down. Damage from World War II and the Siege of Leningrad can still be seen on the church's walls.
Museum of Russian Political History
State Museum of Russian Political History was founded in 1919 and today houses in the former mansion of Matilda Kshesinskaya, prima-ballerina of the Mariinsky Theatre. The Museum stocks are accounted about 500.000 units. For a long time it was a museum of the Great October Socialist Revolution. Today this is the only museum in St. Petersburg, reflecting the state political history at the turning-points of the 19-20th centuries social development. You will be able to spend time with interest and get some new facts about Russian history. The exhibition has documents, photos, letters, old newspapers, death sentences, banners, posters and other memorial from the most politically turbulent times in Russia. Another exhibition is devoted to the life of M. Kshesinskaya with diaries, letters, personal effects and photos. Another exhibition is called The memorial halls of Lenin. One ticket will allow to see all exhibitions of the Museum
