Two Cardinals: Conflict and Controversy in the Victorian Catholic Church
Major figures in the late 19th-century Roman Catholic Church, John Henry Newman and Henry Edward Manning were contemporaries at Oxford and fellow converts to Catholicism who became cardinals of the Roman Church. Manning was Archbishop of Westminster and head of the English Catholic Church from 1865 to 1892. Newman, a poet, educator, and founder of the Oxford Movement, was considered perhaps the greatest theologian of his day. But the two disagreed vehemently on many issues, particularly the decrees of papal infallibility issued at the First Vatican Council. Their disagreements—and even their dislike of one another— illustrate important divisions over the future of the Catholic Church of their day and, indeed, of our own.

Walk to Mary 2017
An annual 21 mile walking pilgrimage from the National Shrine of Saint Joseph in De Pere, WI to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in Champion, WI. (Okay, we do the 2 mile kids version!)
The National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help is a place for all who seek help and healing through the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Whether you are Catholic or not, whether you believe or are still searching for faith, you are welcome here. Following the example of Adele Brise, who first encountered the Queen of Heaven at this site, we journey together, seeking a deeper relationship with Christ through Mary.
Pilgrims from around the world have been experiencing the Shrine for over 150 years. The Catholic Church officially confirmed the Marian apparitions in 2010. And in 2016, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) officially designated these grounds as a National Shrine.

7 sue California diocese over alleged sex abuse by Roman Catholic priest
Aug. 18th | OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Six women and one man who alleged they were sexually abused by a Roman Catholic priest decades ago filed two separate lawsuits Wednesday alleging the Diocese of Oakland was negligent in hiring the priest and failed to warn parents of potential abuse.
The lawsuits, filed in Alameda County Superior Court, call into question how the diocese handled the case of the Rev. Stephen Kiesle, a priest who pleaded no contest to misdemeanor child molestation in 1978.
After his criminal case, Kiesle asked the Vatican to laicize him in a petition that was supported by diocese officials.

The 22-Year Ban on Christmas in Massachusetts
Consider supporting the show through Patreon!
Why did the Massachusetts Bay Colony ban Christmas for 22 years? Today, we look at why the majority of Puritan pilgrims who colonized New England despised Christmas. We delve into their religious objections to its observance and their qualms with how Christmas was celebrated in that era. We finally touch on how this anti-Christmas sentiment started to deteriorate.
We thank all of our Patreon supporters for generously giving to support the channel. A special thanks to Bobby Jordan and Sean!

Boston's Heritage Trail Part 2
Part 1 of our Heritage Freedom Trail ends with Quincy Market, so Part 2 begins again with this heritage site, where we had a good lunch. Then we were off to the North End (where the Italians took their roots) to visit Paul Revere house, the oldest house in Central Boston (built in 1680, and converted into a museum in 1908). On the way, we passed by Christopher Columbus Park, the North Harbor, and a few Catholic churches - St. Clemens, Sacred Heart, and St. Stephens (where Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy was baptized).
Finally, after a 30-minute walk, we reached Paul Revere Monument and behind it the famous Old North Church - the oldest surviving religious structure in Boston (built in 1723). Also notable is that the Church, which was also known as Christ Church, housed Boston's (and America's) first church bells, cast in Gloucester, England. The Church tower stands out, being the tallest structure in all of Boston.
The final leg of this journey is a visit to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum at Columbia Point, some 6 kms. from central Boston. The museum-library presents Kennedy's 1,000 days as President. The museum is divided into rooms and scenes from the White House. A replica of the Oval Office appears as it would have looked during Kennedy's term. With the beautiful gardens and the placid waters surrounding the Library-museum, this is one of the must places to visit in Boston.
Amid more revelations of Catholic Church abuse and cover-up, survivors galvanize
This year saw more appalling revelations about the Catholic Church and the behavior of many priests, exposing just how long some dioceses knew of and concealed sexual abuse. Judy Woodruff has the story, followed by a frank conversation with two abuse survivors and a professor and advocate for change in the church about how these developments affected them and their relationships with the faith.
