St Thomas à Becket
The Church of St Thomas à Becket is a redundant Anglican church in the village of Capel, Kent, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. It is said that Thomas Becket preached either in the church, or under a yew tree in the churchyard. Most significant however, are the extensive Medieval wall paintings which cover most of the nave, depicting Cain and Abel and Christ’s entry into Jerusalem. A journey on foot reinventing the path of the four knights who murdered Thomas Becket in 1170. A re-connection of Saltwood Castle and Canterbury Cathedral, using the water of Saltwood's ancient well to drip a new pilgrim path to the city form the south.
Thomas Becket
Thomas Becket (/ˈbɛkɪt/; also known as Saint Thomas of Canterbury, Thomas of London, and later Thomas à Becket; 21 December c. 1118 (or 1120) – 29 December 1170) was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his murder in 1170. He is venerated as a saint and martyr by both the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion. He engaged in conflict with Henry II of England over the rights and privileges of the Church and was murdered by followers of the king in Canterbury Cathedral. Soon after his death, he was canonised by Pope Alexander III.
