Actors Susan Koozin and David Wald talk about Stages Repertory Theatre's regional premiere production of Pete 'n' Keely, in which a pop-vocal duo (in the vein of Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormet) are reunited for a live television special after being divorced for years. The show, with book by James Hindman, music by Patrick Brady, and lyrics by Mark Waldrop, recalls the nostalgia of 1960s variety shows. The production is directed by Stages artistic director Kenn McLaughlin.

Defying Gravity
For a wedding I produced in Houston, the grooms wanted to hear their favorite song Defying Gravity from Wicked, the musical. Originally we were going to have someone lipsync it and have it be a cool sort of thing, but then I blew them away with this gorgeous performance I had booked for them to sing it live and in full living color! Trust me, this was a show stopping moment of the wedding reception. (It was one of several!) Enjoy the performance. The dress rehearsal earlier that day just made me burst into tears, they were so amazing. These two gorgeous singers are Christina Stroup (who has performed with Theater Under the Stars in Houston TUTS among others!) and Rachael Logue ( who is with Stages Repertory Theater and Main Street Theater in Houston, Texas). I hope you love it as much as I did putting this together. This is one of those moments looking at the couple that just got married and seeing their faces just beam! (I coordinated all my entertainment through J&D Entertainment in Houston, Texas....those guys are my rock when it comes to fabulous stuff like this! You should definitely look them up when you have needs no matter where you are in the US!!)

American pantomime, panto for short, refers to works of theatrical entertainment that have been presented in the United States of America since 1876. The works are derived from the entertainment genre of pantomime that developed in England, presented either as they are in Britain or adapted for the American stage and tailored to American audiences. Pantomime in America, as in England, is usually performed at Christmas time. The entertainments, aimed at families, are based on nursery stories and fairy tales, and they incorporate songs (traditional, popular and new), slapstick comedy, often topical jokes, magic, some cross-dressing, local references, audience participation, and mild adult innuendo.
Although pantomime was not frequently produced in the US during the 20th century and is not well known in America, productions of pantomime, both professional and amateur, have been seen nearly every year somewhere in the US over the past couple of decades.
The earliest known pantomime in the U.S. was Robinson Crusoe produced at St. John's Theatre, New York in 1786. A production at Olympic Theatre in New York of Humpty Dumpty ran for over 1,200 performances in 1868, becoming one of the most successful American pantomimes.
American pantomime, like the British pantomime, incorporates audience participation.
In 1993 there was a production of Cinderella at the UCLA Freud Theatre, starring Zsa Zsa Gabor. Pantomonium Productions has produced pantomimes annually in New York City since 2004. Stages Repertory Theatre in Houston, Texas, has been performing original pantomime-style musicals during the Christmas holidays since 2008: Panto Sleeping Beauty, Panto Pinocchio, Panto Red Riding Hood, Panto Mother Goose and Panto Goldilocks. Since 2004, People's Light and Theatre Company, in Malvern, Pennsylvania, has been presenting an annual Christmas pantomime season.
Lythgoe Family Productions has produced pantomimes each winter since 2010 in California. Their first production was Cinderella in North Hollywood, starring Jerry Mathers and Freddie Stroma. This was followed in 2011 by A Snow White Christmas, starring Marina Sirtis as The Wicked Queen and Neil Patrick Harris as The Magic Mirror, and A Cinderella Christmas, starring Fred Willard as Baron Hardup, Cinderella's father. In 2012, the company mounted A Snow White Christmas at the Pasadena Playhouse, starring Ariana Grande as Snow White, Charlene Tilton as The Wicked Queen and Neil Patrick Harris again as The Magic Mirror. The production drew 13,000 ticket buyers. Aladdin was scheduled for the 2013 holiday season at Pasadena.

Ryan Schabach is a proud alum of UW Madison having graduated in 2003 with an MFA in acting. He has made his career in the regional theatre as a director, fight choreographer through the Society of American Fight Directors, and is a long standing member of Actors’ Equity Association. Ryan spent three seasons on stage at the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespearean Festival. This year will mark his eleventh season performing at Unity Theatre in Brenham, TX. He also received a San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Award for his portrayal of Ken in John Logan’s RED, performed at the 6th Street Playhouse in Santa Rosa, CA. Ryan has also directed the world premiere musical of Panto Mother Goose at Stages Repertory Theatre in Houston, TX.
The many opportunities found while traveling the regional theatre world have brought him closer to his home state of Wisconsin where he now calls Milwaukee home. He has worked with Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Forward Theatre Co., In Tandem, Next Act, Door Shakespeare, Third Avenue Playhouse and most recently BOEING, BOEING at Milwaukee Chamber Theatre in which he was awarded an honorable mention for best performance of the year by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Interview & Performance With Teresa Zimmermann From The Musical Violet
Houston native Teresa Zimmermann grew up in a musical family, but she didn’t think about pursuing a theatre career until her voice teacher encouraged her to go to theatre school instead of beauty school. That changed her life and she graduated with a BFA in theatre from Sam Houston State University.
After a year and half performing on cruise ships, Zimmermann landed roles in local productions at Stages Repertory Theatre, Alley Theatre and HGOco.
Now, Zimmermann takes on the lead role in Violet at Queensbury Theatre. Violet is the story of a woman with a scar across her face who takes a cross-country bus trip in order to be healed by a televangelist. She meets two soldiers along the way and learns what the true meaning of beauty really is.
Violet plays Queensbury Theatre September 6 – 23, 2018.

Ohio University Research Moment - Michael Lincoln
What role do lighting designers play in theatrical productions?
Michael Lincoln has more than 35 years of experience working as a professional lighting designer in theater, opera and dance—from regional productions to Broadway and international venues. At Ohio University, he is a professor of lighting design and the Artistic Director/Head of the Theater Division in the College of Fine Arts.
Lincoln teaches and provides creative opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to learn the art of lighting design. They may gain experience in the Athens campus theaters and while working as assistants on Lincoln’s professional projects with regional theaters, such as the Indiana Repertory Theatre, Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas, and Cleveland Play House, to name a few. The recent purchase of new LED lighting equipment, supported by Ohio University’s 1804 Fund, has offered student designers cutting-edge lighting technology and a fresh artistic palette for their designs.
In “Research Moment,” Lincoln discusses the experiences that students can gain in the Ohio University theater production design and technology program, the types of careers they can pursue in this field, and the art and impact of lighting design in theater.
