Starved Rock State Park
Starved Rock is a huge stony hand that lords over the landscape above the Illinois River. According to legend, in the 1760′s the Potawatomi and the Ottawa surrounded a band of Illiniwek atop this butte, and held their ground until the Illiniwek died of starvation.
There is an idea maze of trails through 18 canyons in this park, and we set off to hike a few, including French and LaSalle at the edge of the woods, along the Illinois River, whose waters ripple with the drift of eagles for much of the year. We veer inland, through clusters of Virginia bluebells, and floral arrays of marsh marigolds, wild iris, trillium and Dutchman’s breeches, plus purple-flowered spiderworts, nodding columbine and blooms of shooting star. We step up a steep walled sandstone slit to a silky waterfall. This is unexpected. It looks like Arizona. Here, in this quiet warm-toned canyon, with a crack to heaven, there is the kind of repose that inspires poets and dreamers. There is a sense of collaborating with the forces behind the pageant of the world.
I next board a packet boat called “The Volunteer,” a 76-foot replica of a 19th-century canal boat that plied the 96-mile, hand-dug I & M (Illinois and Michigan) Canal, with a lock system from the designs of Leonardo da Vinci. This is the canal that turned Chicago from a swamp into a global commerce hub, as it connected Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River, allowing cheap water transport to, from and between the East Coast and The Gulf of Mexico, enabling the efficient mixing of ideas and markets.
There is less than a mile of the once great canal open for navigation, between two turtle-filled locks in LaSalle, and just two mules, Moe and Larry, who now trudge the towpath pulling the craft. Legends still swirl, though. Wild Bill Hickok was a mule tender here; Lincoln took his family on a trip; and the Marx Brothers were chicken farmers nearby.

Hello All!
*Warning, this video is not of high quality as it was originally filmed because I did the stupidest thing and cleared my memory card before I had converted the file to wmv. I'm very sorry and I assure you that I have learned my lesson and future videos will be published before I delete the contents of my memory card. Huge thank you to srecorder.com who has free software and the best quality of any of the five programs that I tried. If you encounter a similar issue, I would highly suggest them*
I went to Utica, IL this weekend and had a great time. I started out at Noni's Bakery and Cafe where I had the most amazing cinnamon roll that my taste buds have ever beheld. Then I headed out to Starved Rock where I did quite a bit of hiking. There were many lookouts and some great canyons to check out. When I finished, I went to the LaSalle County Historical Museum which is free entrance (though they do encourage donations). They had a great variety of historical items to look at from clothes to weapons and more. Flutterby Popcorn had a huge selection, from which I purchased the Chicago mix. It helped to pick up my energy for my final stop at Matthiessen State Park. It focused more on going down than up as SR had. There were gorgeous hidden trails leading to the bottom in a deserted bowl of freshly fallen autumn leaves.
I had a ton of fun and would really suggest stopping by all of these places on your next trip to Utica, IL.

US News - Fire forces evacuations at Illinois resort
Grizzly Jack's Grand Bear Resort fire: No one hurt in blazeUTICA, Ill. -- Multiple fire departments responded Tuesday to a blaze at a northern Illinois resort near Starved Rock State Park early Tuesday. Utica Fire Chief Ben Brown said an alarm sounded at Grizzly Jack's Grand Bear Resort at 5:30 a.m. Firefighters spent several hours in the bitter cold Tuesday morning, working to extinguish an extra-alarm blaze at a resort and indoor water park in Utica, about 90 miles southwest of Chicago.Firefighters spent several hours in the bitter cold Tuesday morning, working to extinguish an extra-alarm blaze at a resort and indoor water park in Utica, about 90 miles southwest of Chicago.Chief of Staff Edward Rogers said all guests were safely evacuated and the fire was under control by 8:30 a.m,but remained on the scene long after to make sure it didn't spark up again. Officials said no one was injured. LaSalle County sheriff's officials said the fire was in the main lodge and pool area at the resort in Utica, which is about 90 miles southwest of Chicago. One mother who was staying at the resort said the fire alarms woke her up, and at first she thought kids had pulled it as a prank. Then when I went in the hallway, that's when I saw that there was flames in the pool, she said.Utica's fire command requested salt trucks because of ice at the scene, where the temperature Tuesday hovered around minus 11 degrees. Several nearby municipalities sent fire trucks to help with the extra-alarm blaze, including LaSalle, Peru and Ottawa. As firefighters battled wind chills around 25 below zero, confused guests had to evacuate the building and keep warm in their cars. Several sought refuge in Starved Rock Lodge, about a mile and a half away. There was a window to the water park, and we could see through the window the water park looked like maybe a gas heater had caught on fire in the wall, and there was flames coming from it, and a lot of smoke, one guest said. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

This is the Lena Kampground that is located in northwest Illinois in Lena, IL. Located approximately 45 minutes east of the Galena area, The Lena KOA is a perfect place to spend a weekend to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I spend most every summer weekend here as a seasonal camper and love the fresh country air and atmosphere. Even more enjoyable is the company of other seasonal and weekend campers that have become great friends as well as the owners and staff of the campground. Everyone is friendly, the kampground is the cleanest you will find and there are plenty of activities for the kids to have a great time! Come on out sometime.
