The Origin of the So-Called Republics in Occupied East Ukraine
Was Russia directly involved in creating the so-called republics in occupied eastern Ukraine? Evidence says yes. Yet, the international community and the media rarely, if ever, blatantly states the obvious. Paul Niland gives us a quick primer one of these Russia-created fake governments.
From Lenin to Lennon - Documentary project supporting
From Lenin to Lennon - Documentary film
In the middle of a deep social and political crisis, the Ukrainian path to a post-sovietic identity is living a thunderous acceleration, undertaking a delicate geopolitical and social repositioning, between Russian and European influences. A new controversal law about “The condamn of totalitarist communist and nazi regime, and the prohibition of the propaganda of his symbols” is getting effective, and the country is living the substitution of the old toponymy and the monuments tied with the communist period: henceforth the October Revolution’s squares, the Moscow boulevards, the Lenin’s statues will be banned. 800 are the places to be renamed, to tell a new story, to start a new tradition. In our journey we would like to visit some of this places.
We decided to pass through Ukraine, starting from the Trascarphatian little town Kalyny where Lenin st. became John Lennon st., passing L’viv and Ivano-Frankivsk (elected the more pro-Western city in the country), arriving to Odessa and see if somebody is still dropping wheelchairs from his stairway, honoring one of the most famous Ejzenstejn’s movie.
We will stop in some of the most important ukrainian towns that had central roles in sovietic pianification since 30 years ago: Krybyj Rih (mining area of the country), Dnipropetrovs’k (the core of sovietic space program), going to Nipro river, one of the streams became underwater museums allowing the population habit to fill the riverbed with ancient sovietic statues, until Kiev.
During the trip we would like to understand if people who live there are feeling more Yuri Gagarin than Stepan Bandera, if they have been involved in their city renaming or if the brand new identity is been decided from above. It’s interesting to verify if the deconstruction process of the communist identity is been evenly spread or if there’s some resistences.
We are in love with cinema as much as we are passionated to post-communist identity issues, we will make a little documentary about this journey. Working on the toponymy seems to be an interesting solution and still unexplored, with the images of this spaces marked by the history changes, where the life of citizens keeps going.

Soviet Symbol Removal: Ukrainian MPs move to purge Ukraine of Soviet-era symbols
As Ukraine fights to bring peace to conflict ridden regions in its east, lawmakers in the capital have been waging a war to try to reclaim the country's history.
On April 9th, Ukrainian parliament passed a bill which bans communist and Nazi propaganda as well as symbols. The ban applies to hundreds of monuments, millions of street signs which will need to be replaced and tons of documents which will need to be processed. This operation is likely to prove costly to a country with a weak currency. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has not signed the law but when he does it will all have to be completed within six months.

Artists recreate protests in Kiev
LEADIN:
The unrest in Ukraine over the past six months has brought chaos and carnage spilling out on to the streets.
Now artists in the country are spilling their souls on the canvas to paint their stories of conflict.
Exhibitions featuring the Maidan revolution artists are springing up in the capital, Kiev.
STORYLINE:
The painting shows the bloodied protesters waving Ukrainian flags being beaten by police.
The protests in Independence Square in the centre of Kiev threw the country into turmoil.
This artwork captures the intensity on the Square as bloody battles took place between protesters and police.
The events in the east of the country has shifted the focus away from the capital, the memories of the bloodshed are still very fresh for many in Kiev.
And nowhere can it be seen more clearly than in the pieces produced by local artists.
Many painters set up temporary studios at the centre of the protests, in Independence Square during the conflict. They wanted to capture each historic movement in their art.
Maryna Sochenko was one of them.
She spent her days switching between protesting and painting, sometimes doing both at the same time.
The paintings created during the protests captures these historical moments on canvas.
She says she always used to paint flowers, but when she went to the first protest with her son she immediately changed.
Gone were the flowers - she became obsessed with capturing every aspect of the revolution.
This is what an artist should do. You have to paint what you feel and what touches you. And then it is going to touch other people, she says.
The battle lines in the centre of the capital stayed largely the same throughout the crisis.
The protestors defended Independence Square with wooden barricades, homemade weapons and sometimes their lives.
Ukrainian house became a stronghold and centre for the protestors.
It was also a place where artists often gathered and created art in response to what they had seen.
Now, several months later, paintings still line the wall of the large entrance hall of the building.
Tania Cheprasova, an artist and teacher at the Ukrainian art academy, spent most of the winter here, painting and protesting.
She painted on canvases, and she also painted the helmets used by protesters in their battles with the police.
She still comes almost every day to continue her work relating to the protests.
She says she wants to give people hope: I want to show that there is not only war but there is also beauty left in things after the revolution.
At the National Art Museum of Ukraine the R) Evolution exhibition shows collages made by French photographer Eric Bouvet.
Bouvet took three trips to Kiev during the months of protests.
His pictures depict the mayhem, the chaos, but also regular life in the times of revolution.
Natalia Shostak, is an expert in contemporary art at the National Art Museum of Ukraine.
She says art is always political and artists need to respond to events in their pieces.
Art is in the political sphere, especially contemporary art. So we cannot be apart from what has happened.
The protests in Kiev started in November 2013 after the government led by President Victor Yanukovych abandoned an agreement with the European union to forge closer ties.
In December 2013 the protest grew and demonstrators and activists set up a permanent camp in Independence Square.
In February 2014, pitched and bloody battles took place in the square, and more than 100 people were killed.
On 22 February, Yanukovych fled the country.
At the height of the protests, a loose collective called the Maidan artists was set up.
There were painters but also photographers, sculptors and actors.
And the country continues its tumultuous path.

Kharkiv Blast Death Toll Rises: Three killed at pro-Ukrainian rally in Ukraine's second largest city
The death toll of Sunday’s terror attack at a pro-Ukrainian rally in Kharkiv has risen to three. A 15-year-old boy died Monday after being rushed to hospital with severe head injuries, city officials say. A day of mourning has been observed in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second most populated city after Kyiv. Flags have been lowered, entertainment cancelled and a moment of silent held. Ukrainian officials say the device was detonated remotely - as around 500 activists marched on the first anniversary of Ukraine’s Euromaidan Revolution.

Automakers not worried about Ukraine crisis as they display latest models
The threat of a ban on car imports didn't seem to be concerning Western automobile manufacturers presenting their new models at the Moscow International Automobile Salon on Thursday.
As tensions between Russia and Ukraine escalated, with recent announcements that Russia may ban car imports if Western countries impose new sanctions, Ford said it wasn't concerned about the Russian market.
Ninety five per cent of Ford cars sold in Russia are produced here, so we don't see any problems or obstacles for the market launch of our products, said Ford PR manager Yekaterina Komarova.
The Moscow International Automobile Salon officially opened in the Russian capital on Thursday featuring the latest novelties in the global automobile industry.
However, sanctions did seem to be having an impact on the Russian economy as a whole.
Russian stock markets dived on Thursday as Switzerland joined the European Union in imposing restrictions on Russian state banks.
Russia's MICEX index dropped nearly two percent and major Russian state banks VTB and Sberbank dropped more than four percent.
