Russian Presidents at the Vatican
More than 5 centuries ago, in the year 1474, Russia and the Vatican exchanged ambassadors for the first time. The diplomatic relationship was stable since 1802, but then came the October Revolution of 1917.
50 years went by until a soviet president would step foot at the Vatican. It was Nikolai Podgorny, who in 1967 had a one hour long conversation with Paul VI. Relations between the USSR and the Vatican would remained intact.
But the situation changed after the meeting at the Vatican between John Paul II and Mikhail Gorbachev. He was the Soviet Unions only president to visit the Vatican.
It was December 1, 1989, just weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall. At the end of the meeting, Gorbachev pledged that the Soviet Union would authorize the full freedom of worship.
The next Russian president to meet with a pope was Boris Yeltsin, this time as the first president of the Russian Federation.
Yeltsin invited John Paul II to travel to Moscow. But the Pope said he was expecting an invitation from the Russian Orthodox Patriarch. That invitation never came.
Vladimir Putin visited John Paul II on two occasions. John Paul II showed Putin the Russian icon of the Virgin of Kazan. The pope later gave the icon to Russia a few months before his death.
Putin and Benedict XVI met in Rome in March 2007. They spoke in German without interpreters. Putin dominates that language because he worked in Dresden, Germany as a KGB agent from 1985 until the Berlin Wall fell.
Following that meeting, the then Russian president and the pope called for an end to extremism and intolerance because they threaten the coexistence between nations.
During all these years, diplomatic relations between Russia and the Vatican have been more political than religious. In Russia 135 million people belong to the Russian Orthodox Church while only 1 million are Catholic. Thats why, the government is commitment to pragmatism: the Kremlin does not want the tune between the Red Square in Moscow and St. Peter's Square, to blur their good relations with the Russian Orthodox Church.

General information about this footage:
After Nazi Germany surrendered in May 1945, General Arnold ordered Lt. Col. Owen Crump to document the extent of the damage caused by aerial bombardment. This project was code-named Special Film Project 186. Crump and his crew, using color film, surveyed bomb damage inflicted on the major European cities. In addition, Crump recorded the debriefings of Nazi civilian and military personnel in Allied custody such as Herman Goering, as well as the capture of the Ohrdruf and Buchenwald concentration camps by American soldiers.
Crump and his crew shot hundreds of hours of film - most of which has never been seen. The Army Air Force declined to fund the production and editing of the footage at an estimated cost of $1 million. The documentary The Story of Special Film Project 186 points out that the effort was the biggest color film project of World War II—and the biggest unseen film of all time.

Historic Footage Connected to Gardner Museum Burglary Released
Twenty-five years after the notorious burglary of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, law enforcement officials are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying an unauthorized visitor to the museum the night before the theft. That person entered the museum through the same door as the thieves in the middle of the night, 24 hours before the theft.
The video footage released Thursday Aug. 6, 2015, captured by Museum security cameras 24 hours before the Gardner heist, shows an automobile pull up next to a rear entrance of the Museum. The car matches the general description of a vehicle that was reported to have been parked outside the Museum moments prior to the theft on March 18, 1990.
The video also shows an unidentified man exiting the automobile and then being allowed inside the Museum, against Museum policy, by a security guard. That event occurred at 12:49 p.m. on March 17, 1990, almost exactly 24 hours before the thieves entered the museum through the same door.
While the images of both the vehicle and the unidentified man are low resolution, law enforcement officials hope that releasing the footage will assist with identifying the man or the vehicle in the video.
