Lenin Square, Novosibirsk, Novosibirsk Oblast, Siberia, Russian Federation, Asia
Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known by the alias Lenin (22 April 1870–21 January 1924), was a Russian communist revolutionary, politician and political theorist. He served as head of government of Soviet Russia from 1917 to 1924 and of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1924. Under his administration, Russia and then the wider Soviet Union became a one-party communist state governed by the Russian Communist Party. Ideologically a Marxist, he developed political theories known as Leninism. Born to a wealthy middle-class family in Simbirsk, Lenin embraced revolutionary socialist politics following his brother's 1887 execution. Expelled from Kazan Imperial University for participating in protests against the Russian Empire's Tsarist government, he devoted the following years to a law degree. He moved to Saint Petersburg in 1893 and became a senior Marxist activist. In 1897, he was arrested for sedition and exiled to Shushenskoye for three years, where he married Nadezhda Krupskaya. After his exile, he moved to Western Europe, where he became a prominent theorist in the Marxist Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP). In 1903, he took a key role in a RSDLP ideological split, leading the Bolshevik faction against Julius Martov's Mensheviks. Encouraging insurrection during Russia's failed Revolution of 1905, he later campaigned for the First World War to be transformed into a Europe-wide proletarian revolution, which as a Marxist he believed would cause the overthrow of capitalism and its replacement with socialism. After the 1917 February Revolution ousted the Tsar and established a Provisional Government, he returned to Russia to play a leading role in the October Revolution, in which the Bolsheviks overthrew the new regime. Lenin's Bolshevik government initially shared power with the Left Socialist Revolutionaries, elected soviets, and a multi-party Constituent Assembly, although by 1918 it had centralised power in the new Communist Party. Lenin's administration redistributed land among the peasantry and nationalised banks and large-scale industry. It withdrew from the First World War by signing a treaty with the Central Powers and promoted world revolution through the Communist International. Opponents were suppressed in the Red Terror, a violent campaign administered by the state security services; tens of thousands were killed or interned in concentration camps. His administration defeated right and left-wing anti-Bolshevik armies in the Russian Civil War from 1917 to 1922 and oversaw the Polish–Soviet War of 1919–1921. Responding to wartime devastation, famine, and popular uprisings, in 1921 Lenin encouraged economic growth through the market-oriented New Economic Policy. Several non-Russian nations secured independence after 1917, but three re-united with Russia through the formation of the Soviet Union in 1922. In increasingly poor health, Lenin expressed opposition to the growing power of his successor, Joseph Stalin, before dying at his dacha in Gorki. Widely considered one of the most significant and influential figures of the 20th century, Lenin was the posthumous subject of a pervasive personality cult within the Soviet Union until its dissolution in 1991. He became an ideological figurehead behind Marxism–Leninism and thus a prominent influence over the international communist movement. A controversial and highly divisive individual, Lenin is viewed by supporters as a champion of socialism and the working class, while critics on both the left and right emphasize his role as founder and leader of an authoritarian regime responsible for political repression and mass killings.

RUSSIA: MOSCOW: 125TH ANNIVERSARY OF LENIN'S BIRTH
Russian/Nat
125 years ago today (Saturday) the founding father of the Soviet Union Vladimir Ilyich Lenin - was born in a town on the Volga river in Russia.
Though the Soviet Union has now also expired many Russians still turned out to mark a birthday they consider still well worth celebrating.
He can still draw a crowd - even if his ideas have currently fallen out of fashion here. Vladimir Ulyanov - better known as Lenin, the name he adopted as a young revolutionary - was born 125 years ago today.
To these Russians, it's still an important occasion. Despite the demise of communism and fall of the former Soviet Union, Lenin remains a powerful presence here. All but the youngest in this crowd were reared on stories and images of the Great Lenin.
He not only founded the Soviet Union, he acted as a sort of surrogate spiritual father for the entire country. Especially among the old and retired, there is a longing for the days when the Soviet Union Lenin founded still existed.
SOUNDBITE: (In Russian)
Lenin was a selfless man. A person of clear conscience, who devoted his whole life to the interests of the people and to freeing them from torment.
SUPER CAPTION: Russian Pensioner
As though sleeping peacefully in the knowledge he is not forgotten, Lenin still lies in state in his mausoleum nearby. At 125 years old, he doesn't look too bad - at least from what one can see.
Save for a Band-Aid on one finger and a generally waxy image, he looks more or less like he did when he died in 1924. The work necessary to keep him presentable doesn't come cheap.
This elaborate set-up hidden below his tomb monitors every element that could give Lenin the merest freckle.
Yesterday, (Friday) hundreds of demonstrators gathered around a statue of Lenin in the center of Moscow. Many are disappointed and angered by what they see as the current chaos in Russia, and the decline in their living standards.
At the mausoleum today, nostalgia and anger were present in equal parts. Many protested plans being considered to remove Lenin from the mausoleum.
SOUNDBITE: (In Russian) We'll never allow it. We will stand side by side outside the mausoleum, and we'll never allow him to be taken away from there. He is sacred, and it is part of our history. Nobody has the right to take our history away from us.
SUPER CAPTION: Russian Pensioner
Lenin might turn a few times in his ornate casket if he could see the current condition of Russia - but he could only be pleased by the scene on Red Square today.

Siberia Drone Flight: Siberia is a vast Russian province encompassing most of Northern Asia, with terrain spanning tundra, coniferous forest and mountain ranges including the Ural, Altai and Verkhoyansk. Lake Baikal, in its south, is the worlds deepest lake, circled by a network of hiking paths called the Great Baikal Trail. The Trans-Siberian Railway passes Baikal on its route between Moscow and the Sea of Japan. Lake Baikals largest island, Olkhon, is a center of shamanism marked by Shaman Rock, an outcropping held sacred by indigenous islanders. The city of Irkutsk, the western gateway to Baikal, offers classical Russian architecture and Russian Orthodox churches. The Altai Mountains are river-rafting and mountaineering destinations with diverse wildlife and ecosystems. The Siberian Traps, a region of stairlike hills formed by ancient volcanoes, include Putorana Nature Reserve, which protects lakes and animals like reindeer and snow sheep. Novosibirsk, Siberias largest city, houses wood-lace buildings and the State Art Museum. // Irkutsk is a city on the Angara River in eastern Siberia, Russia. The river embankment is lined with hurches, including the Epiphany Cathedral (Sobor Bogoyavleniya), with gilded onion domes, and the Spasskaya Church, with its soaring bell tower. The restored neoclassical Moskovskie Vorota arch is also by the water. Near Kirov Square, the Irkutsk Regional Art Museum has ancient icons and more recent Russian artworks. // Ulan-Ude is a city in East Siberia, Russia. The main square Ploshchad Sovetov is home to the huge Lenin Head Monument. The City History Museum is set within the former house of a tea merchant. Nearby is the 18th-century Odigitrievsky Cathedral. To the north, Datsan Rinpoche Bagsha is a Buddhist temple with gilded stupas and sweeping city views. The outdoor Ethnographic Museum displays traditional Buryat wooden yurts. [wikipedia // Google]

SOT: Viktor Dmitriev, Stalin bust recreator (in Russian): I found it at the Torgovaya Ploschad Trade Square, the old Lenin factory. I dug it out, brought it home in my excavator ladle. We’ve restored it, made a bust, brought a pedestal, concreted it, brought it out and painted - so that people can come and take a look.

A bust of the late and former Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin has been resurrected by one enthusiastic excavator-turned-restorer, with sights of the newly painted bust seen on a public street on Tuesday in Novosibirsk.
Viktor Dmitriev, the Stalin bust recreator, explained he found the bust abandoned and buried in a trash pile in one of the town's industrial zones in 2012. The bust was in bad condition and had suffered noticeable visual damage. Viktor decided to bring it home and restore it.

City Anthem of Novosibirsk (Russia) / Гимн Новосибирска - Мой Новосибирск родной
A new monument now stands on Lenin Square and every day at exactly noon, the unofficial anthem of Novosibirsk plays, V. Lensky’s song “My Novosibirsk is native.” A commemorative sign is installed at the subway exit near the opera house.
“Novosibirsk is proud of Vladislav Lensky”, - Vladimir Filippovich Gorodetsky, mayor of Novosibirsk, opened the event with such words. - Being neither a professional poet nor a professional composer, he composed this beautiful music and song, which became the anthem of the city”.
Новогодний Новосибирск (New Year's Novosibirsk)
The center of Novosibirsk in the New Year's decoration.
The main Christmas tree was installed in front of the Opera House, between the monument to Lenin and the central flower bed. The central avenue and the space in front of the steps were turned into a large free skating rink for everyone who wanted to glide on smooth ice. Classical music from various operas and ballets of the theater sounds here. Crowded, fun, noisy, interesting.
Lenin Square in St. Petersburg (Площадь Ленина, Санкт-Петербург).
I love Lenin's square in St. Petersburg. I usually spend time there in the summer. I sit next to the fountains, I read a book on the grass, I watch people sell their paintings or artistic creations. Beautiful. The Lenin's statue is the main feature of the square. I once bumped into an old babushka who was staring at Lenin! She confessed to me that every time she walks by, she always stops for a few seconds to look at Lenin and then carries on her way. I'll always remember that moment. People always want to believe in a noble and eternal idea which goes beyond themselves.
Here, it's me and Katya doing a short video next to Lenin's statue - памятник.
The phrase which is written on under Lenin's statue is: Да здравствует социалистическая революция во всем мире.
Sorry for the helicopter sound in the background!!

RUSSIA: MOSCOW: MUTED MAY DAY CELEBRATIONS
(1 May 2000) Russian/Nat
Small parades of trade unionists and Communists have marched in muted and chilly May Day celebrations in Moscow and across the former Soviet Union.
But the celebration of international workers' solidarity was a pale echo of Soviet-era celebrations with their massive government-organised parades past Kremlin leaders atop Lenin's tomb on Red Square.
Most Russians, who grow much of their own food, used the holiday to plant seedlings at their suburban cottages.
Thousands of Muscovites, battling unseasonably cold weather, joined marches through the Russian capital on Monday to mark the traditional May Day holiday.
This year, May Day competed for public attention with Orthodox Easter Sunday, which fell the day before.
Patriarch Alexy II, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, celebrated Easter week services on Monday in one of the cathedrals in the Kremlin.
As a result, the number of marchers taking part was less than expected.
In all, some 15-thousand people joined a trade union march under blue union banners fluttering in a near-freezing breeze along Tverskaya Ulitsa, a main thoroughfare leading to city hall.
The members and supporters of the Moscow Federation of Trade Unions - traditionally centrist rather than left-wing - were addressed by mayor Yury Luzhkov outside the city hall.
With the favourite target of past Communist parades, former President Boris Yeltsin, in retirement, slogans tended toward demands for higher social benefits and minimum wages.
President Vladimir Putin, elected on March 26, enjoys widespread support, and many Communists appear ready to work with him.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
People always believe and hope, and we think that our hope will coincide with the choice that the people made when they elected Putin president.
SUPER CAPTION: Vladimir Naumov, Marcher
Separately, Communists and other left-wing groups paraded with red Soviet flags, marching past a towering statue of Lenin on Kaluga Square in central Moscow.
Police put the number of Communist marchers at seven-thousand.
The marchers were led by party leader Gennady Zyuganov, who told the crowd that - unlike foreign institutions - the communists and other left-wing movements could improve conditions for the people of Russia.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
While Russia is being damaged on the international scene, its markets are being restricted. The IMF keeps on interfering in the internal affairs of our country.
SUPER CAPTION: Gennady Zyuganov, Communist Party Leader
In Soviet times, the May Day holiday one was one of the main events on the Communist calendar.
Demonstrators used to march through the city centre and across Red Square, where the Communist hierarchy greeted the columns from atop Lenin's mausoleum.
But - despite the end of the Soviet Union and dwindling numbers of marchers - some of those taking part in the celebrations on Monday thought May Day was as relevant now as it was then.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Today, this holiday is more current than ever, because people are so poor and have their backs against the wall, such that it could end catastrophically for the oligarchs very soon.
SUPER CAPTION: Mikhail, Marcher
Moscow wasn't the only city where May Day was celebrated.
Trade union officials said several thousand people marched in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and Vladivostok in the Far East, Novosibirsk and Yakutsk in Siberia and a half-dozen other cities.
Marchers in the Siberian town of Kemerovo walked through a thin coating of wet snow.
Celebrations were muted in the former Soviet republic of Belarus, with leaders of left-wing parties laying flowers
at a monument to Lenin.
