A few months ago, I was given the opportunity to check out the decaying SS Unites States Ocean liner. This ocean liner has been sitting in Philadelphia Pennsylvania since 1996. This ship is currently off limits to the public. It is located on a private shipyard shared with the US Govt. I had to undergo background checks to even step foot on the port. Exploring this one without permission is straight up impossible so DO NOT ATTEMPT!
The SS United States is one of the last remaining Ocean Liners. SSUS was part of the United States Lines Fleet. The ships first maiden voyage was in 1952. The ship is about 990 feet long (5 City Blocks) and it is built by famous naval architect, William Gibbs. The SS United States was built different then other ocean liners during this time period. The ship was built with a mixture of steel and aluminum. Steel was used at the bow and on the lower decks as the entire upper desk was constructed of aluminum. The ship was also designed to be fireproof. No wood was used anywhere on the ship. Even the piano was designed with special fireproof wood. Mr. Gibbs designed the ship this way as the United States Govt wanted a ship that was safe and fast. Boy was she. The SS United States broke the speed record of 40-45MPH. It still holds the record today as the fastest Ocean Liner to ever cross the Atlantic Ocean. The US Govt second request was to have a ship built in the same quality as a naval ship. This was requested just incase World War III was to happen. The ship could've converted and transport 15,000 troops to Europe. The SS United States had areas for three classes, First Class, Cabin Class, and Tourist Class. Each class had access to certain areas of the ship. Many famous people traveled to and from the United States on this ship. However in the 60s, transportation across the Atlantic Ocean by plane was much faster. This in turn destroyed the ocean liners profit. Many ships like the Queen Mary, SS America, SS France, started to seize operations due to less interest. The SS United States last journey was in 1969. This massive ship never sailed on it own power again. It ended up being moved to Virginia under a new owner. All of the interior furniture was auctioned off. Some of the interior furniture including the ships horn can be found in museums. In the early 1990s, the ship was sent to Turkey to have its entire interior walls stripped to it bare bones due to asbestos. Then in 1996, the ship arrived to Philadelphia in hopes to be a riverfront Casino / Hotel. Those plans however fell through and the SS United States went through more owners. The ship was about to be scrapped until the SS United States Conservatory bought the ship. The owner of the group is the great granddaughter of William Gibbs, the creator of this ship. They been actively trying to find a owner to restore the ship. Many people are interested, just nothing has been finalized. They rely off donations to keep the ship docked which cost them 50,000 Us Dollars a month. Donations are keeping this ship afloat. Tarmo is a Finnish steam-powered icebreaker preserved in the Maritime Museum of Finland in Kotka.Built in 1907 by Sir W.G.Armstrong, Whitworth & Co Ltd in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom, she was the third state-owned icebreaker of Finland and the last Finnish steam-powered icebreaker to remain in service.When Tarmo was decommissioned in 1970, a decision was made to preserve the vessel as a museum ship.

Before television, people came to movie theatres to watch the news. British Pathé was at the forefront of cinematic journalism, blending information with entertainment to popular effect. Over the course of a century, it documented everything from major armed conflicts and seismic political crises to the curious hobbies and eccentric lives of ordinary people. If it happened, British Pathé filmed it.
Now considered to be the finest newsreel archive in the world, British Pathé is a treasure trove of 85,000 films unrivalled in their historical and cultural significance.

Bosnia - USA tank shunts at Kakanj - April 2010 - Part 2
A USA class 0-6-0 tank loco, as they were known in the UK, shunts the mine at Kakanj in Bosnia Herzegovina 2nd April 2010. These locomotives, known originally as the S100 class, were a design produced for the American armed forces as a general workhorse during WW2. Many of them were left around Europe after the end of the war. This particular example is one that, I believe, was produced locally after the war in Yugoslavia.
Lillie Langtry
Lillie Langtry, usually spelled Lily Langtry in the United States, born Emilie Charlotte Le Breton, was celebrated as a young woman of beauty and charm, who later established a reputation as an actress and producer. In May 1877, Lady Sebright invited her to an evening at home, attended by some of the famous artists of the day. Her looks and personality attracted interest, commentary, and invitations from artists and society hostesses.
By 1881, she had become an actress and starred in many plays, including She Stoops to Conquer, The Lady of Lyons, and As You Like It, eventually running her own stage production company. In later life she performed dramatic sketches in vaudeville. She was also known for her relationships with noblemen, including the Prince of Wales, the Earl of Shrewsbury, and Prince Louis of Battenberg. She was the subject of widespread public and media interest.

Landing at the World's Oldest Airport
Shooting the RNAV (GPS) Runway 15 approach down to minimums (about 700ft AGL, find the airport about 2:24) to land in the available 2191 feet at College Park Airport (KCGS, College Park, MD), the oldest continually operated airport in the world and now one of the most difficult to access thanks to the TSA magic show. Established in August 1909 by the United States Army Signal Corps to serve as a training location for Wilbur Wright to instruct two military officers to fly the government's first airplane, College Park is one of the most historic airports in the world, hosting a number of aviation firsts since it's creation in August 1909, including the first Postal Airmail Service in 1918, the first controlled helicopter flight in 1924, and the development of the first radio navigation aids.

Abandoned Cars is Tim Lanes first collection of graphic short stories, noir-ish narratives that are united by their exploration of the great American mythological drama by way of the desperate and haunted characters that populate its pages. Lanes characters exist on the margins of society—alienated, floating in the void between hope and despair, confused but introspective. Some of them are experiencing the aftermath of an existential car crash—those surreal moments after a car accident, when time slows down and youre trying to determine what just happened and how badly youre hurt. Others have gone off the deep end, or were never anywhere but the deep end. Some are ridiculous, others dignified in their efforts to struggle to make sense of, and cope with, the absurdities, outrages, ghosts, and poisons in their lives.
The writing is straightforward, the stories mainstream but told in a pulpy idiom with an existential edge, often in the first person, reminiscent of David Goodiss or Jim Thompsons prose or of films like Pick-Up on South Street or Out of the Past. Visually, Lanes drawing is in a realistic mode, reminiscent of Charles Burns, that heightens the tension in stories that veer between naturalism on the one hand and the comical, nightmarish, and hallucinatory on the other. Here, American culture is a thrift store and the characters are thrift store junkies living among the clutter. Its an America depicted as a subdued and haunted Coney Island, made up of lost characters—boozing, brawling, haplessly shooting themselves in the face, and hopping freight trains in search of Elvis.
Abandoned Cars is an impressive debut of a major young American cartoonist.
