Het Steen castle in Antwerp
Het steen castle in Antwerp, Antwerpen
Het Steen is a medieval fortress in the old city centre of Antwerp, Belgium, one of Europe's biggest ports. Built after the Viking incursions in the early Middle Ages as the first stone fortress of Antwerp, Het Steen is Antwerp's oldest building and used to be its oldest urban centre.
Previously known as Antwerpen Burcht (fortress), Het Steen gained its current name in around 1520, after significant rebuilding under Charles V. The rebuilding led to its being known first as 's Heeren Steen (the King's stone castle), and later simply as Het Steen (the stone castle). The Dutch word steen means stone, and is used for fortress or palace, as in the Gravensteen in Ghent, Belgium.
The fortress made it possible to control the access to the Scheldt, the river on whose bank it stands. It was used as a prison between 1303 and 1827. The largest part of the fortress, including dozens of historic houses and the oldest church of the city, was demolished in the 19th century when the quays were straightened to stop the silting up of the Scheldt. The remaining building, heavily changed, contains a shipping museum, with some old canal barges displayed on the quay outside.
In 1890 Het Steen became the museum of archeology and in 1952 an annex was added to house the museum of Antwerp maritime history, which in 2011 moved to the nearby Museum Aan de Stroom. Here you’ll also find a war memorial to the Canadian soldiers in World War II.

There are some beautiful plaques on the back side of the Steen Castle at Antwerp. Canadian visitors will especially want to see the plaques thanking the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry for their part in the liberation of Antwerp, in 1944.
At the entrance to Het Steen is a bas-relief of Semini, above the archway, around 2nd century. Semini is the Scandinavian God of youth and fertility (with symbolic phallus). A historical plaque near Het Steen explains that women of the town appealed to Semini when they desired children; the god was reviled by later religious clergy. Inhabitants of Antwerp previously referred to themselves as children of Semini. An organization concerned with the historic preservation of Het Steen and Semini, Antwerp Komitee Semini in Ere (AKSIE), formed in 1986, holds annual celebrations at Het Steen as cultural events.
At the entrance bridge to the castle is a statue of a giant and two humans. It depicts the giant Lange Wapper who used to terrorise the inhabitants of the city in medieval times.

Travel Antwerp, Belgium - Het Steen (Oldest Stone Structure in Antwerp)
Take a tour of Het Steen in Antwerp, Belgium -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The Het Steen, which means the Stone in Dutch, is Antwerp's oldest structure.
This renowned castle was built in the early 13th century, during Belgium's Medieval Age.
The castle has had a long and varied history, changing functions and masters throughout the years.
The Het Steen has played the role of a fortress, a prison, and is currently a museum.
Although the castle was built for the Dukes of Antwerp, it spent more time housing prisoners.
High walls, turrets, towers, and pennants make the Het Steen a classic castle.
Today, it is home to Antwerp's museums of archaeology and maritime history.
Antwerp Steen Castle
Het Steen is the oldest building in Antwerp - the first stones date from the 11th century - and over the centuries it has fulfilled several functions. It is located along the Scheldt River, near a former peninsula called De Werf. The first settlement with earth walls appeared on De Werf in the 9th century. It became a fortress. Around the turn of the century, between the 12th and 13th centuries, a stone fortress wall and Het Steen, one of three gatehouses in the fortress, were constructed here. Het Steen was substantially refurbished under Charles V at the beginning of the 16th century. You can still see the colour difference in the façade.
Het Steen was used as a prison until 1823. After serving shortly as a residence, sawmill and fish depot, Het Steen opened as a museum in 1862. Initially it was the Museum of Antiquities and from 1952 to 2008 it served as the National Maritime Museum. Now you can admire that collection in the MAS | Museum aan de Stroom.
Het Steen will undergo a substantial renovation starting in 2018. Het Steen will be the gateway to Antwerp in 2020 and serve as a cruise terminal, welcome centre and interactive experience route. The main focus of the experience centre will be Antwerp and its history.
Be sure to walk past Het Steen when you visit Antwerp. You'll feel like a knight or a lady in the castle setting. It's the perfect background for a fairy-tale photo along the Scheldt River. Steen Castle, locally known as Het Steen, which translates to 'The Stone', lies on the east bank of the Scheldt river in the city center of Antwerp, in the province of Antwerp in the Flemish region in Belgium.
The castle got its name from the fact that it was one of the earliest buildings in Antwerp constructed with stones at a time when most houses were still built with wood.
The first building at this site dates back to 645. Also in 836 another fortification at this site was destroyed by Vikings. But those fortifications were probably nothing more than wooden fences.
The castle we see today was built around 1200-1225 as residence of a castle lord. In those times it was part of a much larger fortification.
In 1520, during the reign of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, Steen castle was renovated by the architects Keldermans and De Waghemakere. For their renovations they used a much lighter sort of stone, namely sandstone instead of Doornik limestone. This is the reason of the color difference of the present walls.
In 1549 the castle was turned into a prison; a use which it would keep until 1823. During the 18th and 19th century several restorations took place. In 1824 the castle was bought by the Antwerp city counsel.
Steen Castle now houses the National Maritime Museum, since 1952.
This is a very nice castle. But don't forget to explore the city itself with lots of other beautiful buildings, friendly people and great food and drinks.
