Touring Step House, Mesa Verde
A 5-part video shared by Southwest Discovered of the quieter, west side of the park, and then back to the east side to check out the new bbq smoker for lunch near Spruce Tree House.
For the entire video article:
During one of the most beautiful monsoon seasons we’ve seen, we took an early August drive to Mesa Verde of Southwestern Colorado. Beginning with the visitor’s center, the drive up the mesa, looking out to views with curtains of rain, and on to the quieter side of the park — the west side with tours of Step House and Long House on the Weatherill Mesa. Later, we drive back to the east side of the park, gorgeous views along the way, and stopping for lunch to check out the new bbq smoker at Spruce Tree Terrace Restaurant. We hope you enjoy this virtual tour!

ABOUT MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARK IN COLORADO
Mesa Verde National Park (Spanish for green tableland) was established to preserve archaeological sites built by the Ancestral Puebloans who inhabited Mesa Verde for more than 700 years (550 A.D. to 1300 A.D.). Currently Mesa Verde has over 4,700 archaeological sites including 600 cliff dwellings and the mesa top sites of pithouses, pueblos, masonry towers, and farming structure, with many more yet to be discovered. These sites are some of the most notable and best preserved ruins in the United States. For the first six centuries, they primarily lived on the mesa tops. It was not until the final 75 to 100 years that they constructed and lived in the cliff dwellings for which Mesa Verde is best known.
Mesa Verde National Park offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Puebloans, a group of people living in the Four Corners region who chose Mesa Verde for their home. For more than 700 years they and their descendants lived and flourished in this region, eventually building elaborate stone communities in the sheltered alcoves of the canyon walls. Then, in the late A.D. 1200s, in the span of a generation or two, they left their homes and moved away.
Five of the most impressive cliff dwelling sites include:
• Balcony House – is reachable by climbing a 32-foot ladder and crawling through a short tunnel.
• Cliff Palace – has more than 150 rooms occupying a deep alcove beneath a canyon rim.
• Long House - was excavated between 1959 and 1961 as part of the Wetherill Mesa Archeological Project.
• Spruce Tree House - is the best preserved cliff dwelling in all of Mesa Verde National Park.
• Step House - shows evidence of two occupations taking place in one location.
Cliff dwelling tours vary from independent self-guided tours to ranger-led walking tours. Comprehensive, interpretive, half-day guided bus tours feature a variety of sites, including Cliff Palace.
That’s just a small part of the adventure and beauty you’ll find here!

US Highway 160 - Cortez - Mesa Verde - Colorado | Drive America's Highways ????
???? Drive America's Highways on the Trail of the Ancients and the San Juan Skyway (US-160) for 9 miles east from State Highway 145 to the Mesa Verde National Park Visitors Center in Colorado ⛰️
The Trail of the Ancients is a National Scenic Byway located in the states of Colorado and Utah. The route highlights the archaeological and cultural history of southwestern Native American peoples and traverses the widely diverse geological landscape of the Four Corners region. It was the first National Scenic Byway that was designated solely for its archaeological sites. The entire route is approximately 480 miles --Wikipedia
The San Juan Skyway is an All-American Road and a component in the Colorado Scenic and Historic Byway System. It forms a 233.0-mile (375.0 km) loop in the southwest part of the U.S. state of Colorado traversing the heart of the San Juan Mountains. It roughly parallels the routes of the narrow gauge railways: Rio Grande Southern (US 160, SH 145 and SH 62); and the unconnected Ouray and Silverton Branches of the Denver & Rio Grande along US 550 with the Silverton Railroad bridging a part of the gap. Its origin can be traced to the Around the Circle Route promoted by the D&RG. --Wikipedia

Hi, my name is Steve and I am here to encourage you to get outdoors and establish a connection with nature. The one thing I like to do most of all, is to sit back and take in nature. To look at the birds, listen to their singing, go hiking and camping and sometimes just being alone with nature. This is special to me. So, I want to share my experiences outdoors with you in hope to encourage you to get outdoors and do the same, even if it is in your own backyard.

A RoadSchool Fieldtrip | Mesa Verde National Park | Checking out the cliff dwellings
On our journey south, we made it a point to stop and see Mesa Verde National Park. We did the Balcony House tour, which takes you through one of the cliff dwellings once lived in by the Ancestral Puebloans. It was a great day, due to the technical nature of the tour, we went separately so that Emmett wouldn't have to do the tour.

Mesa Verde (UNESCO Heritage Site) - In A Colorado Minute (Week 201)
--- ---
Mesa Verde is not only a beautiful US National Park but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's the largest archeological preserve in the United States and features over 4000 archaeological sites and over 600 cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Pueblo peoples, also known as Anasazi.
The Ancestral Pueblo peoples lived in Mesa Verde (green table) from 600 to 1300, where they first built round pit houses, then mesa-top villages made of adobe and eventually the cliff dwellings.
Mesa Verde is in the Four Corners region, where I had traveled to on my special Week 200 road trip. By the time we made it from the Four Corners Monument to Mesa Verde, there were less than two hours of daylight left. As a result, I didn't actually get to go into any of the cliff dwellings and I didn't really have time to set up my tripod for shots. Therefore, this videos shows mostly exterior views (with a few pit houses at an open archeological site) and consists more of photos than actual video footage. I hope I can make a second visit happen later this year to explore more of the cliff dwellings.
