Moldova: Tens of thousands partake in Chisinau Immortal Regiment march
Tens of thousands participated in the Immortal Regiment march that took place in Chisinau, Monday, to mark the 71st anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II.
The participants, including members of civil society groups, war veterans and families with children gathered at the Opera and Ballet Theatre to celebrate Victory Day, holding a portrait of an unknown veteran or a relative before they marched on the streets of Chisinau. The march passed in front of the Stephen the Great Monument before the participants headed to the Eternity Memorial monument where the leader of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon and other attendees released doves into the sky to symbolise peace.

몰도바의 수도 키시너우는 15세기에 세워진 도시로 인구는 약 70만명 정도이다. 공항에서 시내로 들어가다 보면 1986년에 세운 24층짜리 구 소련 시절의 조립식 아파트 가 제일 먼저 눈에 들어온다. 지금도 사람이 살고 있다. 몰도바는 전체 인구의 70%가 몰도바 인다. 나머지는 러시아, 우크라이나, 터키인까지 다양한 민족이 산다. 시내 중앙엔 1841년 러시아 군이 터키와의 전쟁에서 승리한 기념으로 세운 개선문이 있다. 파리의 개선문과 닮았다. 개선문 뒤로 키시너우 대성당이 있다. 개선문 보다 5년 먼저 세워진 동방 정교 성당이다. 몰도바 사람들은 종교적으로 믿음이 강하다. 인구의 95%가 동방정교를 믿는 기독교인이다. 주일이면 성당이나 수도원은 사람들로 넘쳐난다. 성당앞 공터에는 서양식 장기인 체스판이 놓여있다. 사람이 올라갈 수 있을 정도로 크다. 우리 장기처럼 두는 사람보다 구경꾼이 더 많다. 워낙 체스 판이 커서 장기판처럼 엎을 일은 없을 것 같다. 주말을 맞아 공원에서 비둘기와 노는 모습이 우리네 공원에서 흔히 보는 풍경과 같다. 몰도바 사람들에게 가장 큰 존경을 받는 왕이다. 재위 기간이 무려 47년으로 이때 몰도바가 제일 강성했다. 키시너우 시내가 잘 내려 다 보이는 언덕위에 전쟁 기념관이 있다. 몰도바는 지리적으로 강대국들 사이에 있어 많은 전쟁을 치렀고, 강대국에 합병되고 독립하기를 반복했다. 지금은 1991년 구 소련에서 독립, 몰도바 공화국이 되었다. 이 전쟁 기념관에는 전쟁 기록과 묘지까지 있어 우리의 현충원과 비슷하다. 꺼지지 않는 불을 밝혀 후세에도 잊지 말자고 경고하고 있다. 정각이 되면 위병 교대식이 있다. 힘있고 절도 있는 모습에서 몰도바가 다시는 다른 나라로부터 침략을 받지 않을 것 같다는 느낌이 들었다.
