Cultural Centre for Norwegian Waterfront by Nuan Studio
CCNW is located strategically in the heart of Oslo, Norway. The site has become a potential point of attraction from the sea activities as well as other parts of the city. CCNW focus on providing the maximum of civic spaces and experiential journey from ground to top roof terrace which is accessible at different levels. The main programmes such as library, exhibition spaces and auditorium are also arranged gradually offering the best views of Oslo.
Both outdoor civic spaces in a form of roof landscape and indoor programmes are well interconnected. These elements are wrapped elegantly with monolithic crystallized glass façade and vertical features enhancing the ornament quality of frozen waterfall. The vertical features also serve as shading fins but yet the facade is very transparent. The civic journey starts from the artificial lake at the foothill with an outdoor amphitheatre for public seating and occasional outdoor performances.
At the next destination, the visitors arrive at the secret garden partially enclosed by external glass facade; embellished with Nordic tall trees and leaving a curiosity from the street visibility. The visitors finally arrive at the highest point of roof terrace. This is the climax of journey offering the 360-degree view to the city of Oslo. For people living in places like Oymyakon, Russia, dealing with freezing temperatures is an
everyday occurrence. Stand outside in -50°F weather and you’ll get frostbite in 10 minutes. Here are some of the coldest inhabited places on the planet.
2)Yakutsk, Russia
One of a number of cities in the region of Siberia in Russia where temperatures can routinely reach below -50°F, with record lows reaching -80°F.
3) Barrow, Alaska
The northernmost city in the United States and doesn’t break out of freezing temperatures until June.
4)Fraser, Colorado
Nicknamed the “Icebox of the Nation, and often enjoys average temperatures of 1°F in the winter.
5) Astana, Kazakhstan
The city of Astana, Kazakhstan is one of the coldest capital cities on the planet, where the temperature can reach -40°F in some winter months.
6) Stjordal, Norway
The region of Stjordal, Norway, home to several towns, is frozen over for at least a third of the year as temperatures can plunge to -4°F.
7) Harbin, China

Gerb. Heinemann SE & co is one of the worlds largest corporations in duty free retail. They have stores at most european airports with international traffic. A number of these stores include a regional area, wherein regional products can be presented in a specifically tailored atmosphere. In company with some of the most known architect offices of the world, TYIN was asked to design this regional area in the Heinemann store at Trondheim Airport.
The project has two main objectives. First, to show the uniqueness of the city and its cultural heritage. Second, to create something authentic and real, in stark contrast to the otherwise artificial and sterile environment of the airport. Hiding behind the facades of Trondheims unique wooden buildings are the backbones of Norwegian building tradition, the timber log structures. This way of building is several centuries old, and still in use today. Trondheim is also known for its steel industry related to shipping and seafare, another integral part of Norwegian cultural heritage.
We began the process by searching for an old, traditional log house typical for the Trondheim-area. The log house we ended up with dates back to the 1880s. It was in a bad state and destined for demolition. After saving it from certain destruction, we carefully dissected and moved it to an indoor building hall. The rotting logs were removed, and the shape of the remaining structure dictated the design. The project is carried by miniature pier houses, a common trait of Trondheims traditional building mass. The miniatures are silhouette replicas of actual buildings. The steel shelves are burrowed deep into the timber logs, with each module containing a complex network of electric wiring, supplying the shelves with LED-lights. Remaining logs were cut into pieces and used to create a natural wooden back-wall. All work on the project was done by local craftsmen in a local setting.
With this project we attempt to display our core values and our way of design, our love for simplicity in details and material choice, at the very heart of the commercial world.

Sentrale bygninger fra norsk arkitekturhistorie er filmet slik de færreste har opplevd dem tidligere; via dronen får man se bygningen i kontekst og landskap, og man opplever de tredimensjonale rommene på nye måter.
