Custer's Gulch RV Park in Custer South Dakota
We camped here in our 5th wheel in August of 2011. The park was very nice and scenic. I loved all the rocky peaks. We stayed here for a couple of weeks to give us time to take in all the attractions of the area. The park is located about 3 miles from the town of Custer and a mile from Custer State Park. I spent much time exploring the surrounding hills and woods. There are over a hundred miles of bike trails that are accessible from the park entrance. The utilities were excellent and the WiFi was adequate. Also our Verizon MiFi worked very well. Unfortunately our AT&T service was weak. Overall, I highly recommend the park.

Campground Review:
The Stockade Lake North Campground is located just inside the west entrance to Custer State Park in Custer, South Dakota. This prime camping location is 15 minutes from Mount Rushmore, Wind Cave National Park, and just minutes from historic Custer, the Gordon Stockade, and a scenic jaunt to the State Park Wildlife Loop.
The sites at this campground are reservation-only, even on same-day arrival. In order to secure a campground, campers need to call the reservation number. However, once the reservation is made, campers can proceed to their campsite without having to worry about checking in with on-site staff, and no hassle with hanging a tag on the campsite post.
The campground is open for camping from the beginning of May to late September, weather permitting. There are 42 campsites available, many with electricity and several pull-through sites, but no full hook-ups. There are both vault and flush toilets, a shower house, and drinking water available. There is also a nice little playground in the center of the campground and an adjoining amphitheater where they may show informational films in the summer. Campsites here are well-spread among the trees, offering relative privacy and quiet space, with enough room to hang a hammock or two!
The campground is just a quick walk up from Stockade Lake, where you can fish, swim, put your boat in, view wildlife, and enjoy the small beach and playground. Across the small highway is Bismark Lake, in Black Hills National Forest, which is stocked for fishing, and provided us with a delicious fried trout meal our second night! There is also a pair of osprey that are seen frequently between the two lakes, and are a joy to watch as they fish and soar over the lakes.
We stayed on opening weekend in our small RV with electric on site 32E, and the campground was relatively empty. Our site was a bit unlevel, but very scenic and shady. Only one other site was close to ours, and luckily, no one was in it over that we...

Custer State Park (South Dakota) - In Another Minute (Week 251)
--- --- I just cannot recommend a visit to Custer State Park in South Dakota enough! At the end of our road trip through the Black Hills in September, we only drove into the park because we had run out of time to go all the way up to the Badlands, yet wanted to see a little bit more and maybe relax in nature for a bit.
No one had recommended the park to us, we just happened to be near it after visiting the Crazy Horse Monument. Since that wonderful discovery, I have recommended Custer State Park with its beautiful lakes, forests, mountains, wildflowers, easily visible wildlife and astonishing Needles Highway to everyone willing to listen. And we definitely want to go back in the summer to explore the Wildlife Loop, drive up Needles Highway again and maybe stay for a few days of relaxing, fishing, reading and shooting a lot more pictures and videos.
One of the big draws of the park are all the wild animals that you get to see roaming freely, including wild turkeys, mountain goats, elks and 1500 buffaloes! We didn't see any of the begging burros because those hang out around the Wildlife Loop, which we didn't drive down. Next time...
Watching the sunset at Sylvan Lake (which gives the impression that it's on top of the world, far, far away from all worries and bad feelings) has been one of the most beautiful and meaningful experiences of 2014 and will be something I don't think I'll ever forget.
The reason why it's taken me so long to publish the video about it, which I filmed back in September 2014, is that I didn't want to rush the edit and other videos kept coming in-between. Next week, I plan to publish a video focusing just on Needles Highway, which I consider a must-see sight.
