Stoke-on-Trent is aiming to become UK City of Culture 2021 and this film supports the bid.
This film, the first of a series, is being released alongside a brand new magazine called The Place 2 Be and the launch of a new channel on The Sentinel website.

A Life in Fast Forward
Simon Dayman, a young father, was diagnosed with brain cancer in November of 2016, aged 35. He live-streamed a Facebook video explaining his diagnosis (which can be seen at the beginning of the film) and told his friends and family through the medium that he had 3-6 months to live and how the best way to deal with his situation, was to take everything positively and make the most of what little time he had left.
Frequently, Simon would post videos on Facebook answering questions about his diagnosis, updates and his thoughts on death and living. Simon is an old family friend of ours and I have always looked up to Simon as being a cool uncle of mine, upon hearing his diagnosis and hearing his positive mental attitude towards his horrific situation inspired me to want to share his message, not just literally on Facebook, but through film.
In February of 2017, myself and a team of 4 others traveled across to Lincoln, England and spent the day with Simon, interviewing him in the morning and going on a walk around the city to provide the reflective visuals for the film. It was amazing to see him again and hear his thoughts in person, and I felt so inspired just listening to him.
Simon continued the Facebook page ‘Simon Says’ uploading videos until his physical health started to deteriorate in the Summer of 2017. Check out his videos here (
Simon passed away on the morning of 13th July 2017, 8 months after his original 3-6 month diagnosis, his following on Facebook had grown tremendously and he had hosted the first ‘Rave for life’ (Charity club night) just weeks before his passing. It is an honor to have known the coolest man on the planet, and to continue his legacy through the power of the film.

Niall Conroy, 20, is a film maker studying at Staffordshire University based in Stoke-on-Trent in England. He grew up as a theatre actor but moved to film in his late teens, specializing in directing and editing. The project which kick-started Niall’s film making was ‘Straight Outta Compton Dando’ – a parody music video about rappers in the West Country, it went viral in Somerset and encouraged him to make music videos for local bands and friends while he applied for Film School. ‘A Life in Fast Forward’ is only Niall’s second non-fiction short film and couldn’t have done it without his producer, Jennie Millar, and his talented camera & sound team, Gemma Chambers, Tom Hardwick and George Rawding. Niall went on to write and direct the short film ‘The Door’ with partner Becca Hirst ( whilst being asked to edit the graduate film ‘miss Gender’ which was recently screened at the Leeds INDIs festival.

First formed in 1982 by Tony McMillan, rockabilly band The Krewmen got their first break in 1985 touring as Elvis Presley's early band in Elvis The Musical. Later that year (following a line-up change) they signed to Lost Moment Records and released two singles 'What You Are Today' and 'Ramblin' and toured relentlessly around the UK and Europe. Around this time Tony became disillusioned with playing and recording covers and with the backing of the record company once more changed the line-up and began producing his own, harder edged compositions. Thus they soon established themselves on the psychobilly scene playing to packed houses, recording ten albums and selling thousands of records and CDs worldwide.

CINEMAS used to be EVERYWHERE
Before the rise of home video, cinemas used to be everywhere with many showtimes. I had many movie theaters near me in Staffordshire and with the help of a book by Barry Blaize called The Lost Empire: Picture Houses of the Potteries and Newcastle-under-Lyme I attempt to see if any of the old cinema buildings are still standing. I'll be also looking at old movie showtimes pics to see what films were showing back then and my memories of going to see those screenings.

In 1929, the building was extended, with a new foyer added on the side, and the facade of the Palace Cinema was modernised in an Art Deco style. The seating capacity was increased to 1,200 with the addition of a circle. It screened its first ‘talkie’ “Smiling Irish Eyes” on 6th January 1930.
CinemaScope was installed and the first film to be screened in this process was Howard Keel “Rose Marie” on 29th November 1954. The Palace Cinema was closed on 5th March 1966 with Elvis Presley in “Tickle Me”.
It was converted into a Surewin Bingo Club by the Hutchinson Group of Burnley, Lancashire. In 1978 they converted the former circle into a twin screen cinema with seating provided for 102 where Kris Kistopherson in “Convoy” was screened, and 100 where John Travolta in “Grease” was screened. The bingo club continued to operate in the former stalls area, and the building was known as the Palace Entertainment Centre.

The Green Cross Man is a costumed superhero character created in 1970 as an aid to teaching young children the Green Cross Code, and for promoting general road safety. British actor David Prowse MBE, best known for playing Darth Vader in Star Wars, played the character in a series of Public Information Films (PIFs) sponsored by the Central Office of Information for the UK Department of the Environment. The light-hearted spots ran on UK television from 1975 to 1990.
In the films, Green Cross Man has the power to teleport from his monitoring station at Green Cross Control to any location where children are in need of pedestrian safety instruction. He accomplishes this by use of a wristwatch-like dematerialiser device.

Hanley, in Staffordshire, England, is one of the six major towns that joined together to form the city of Stoke-on-Trent in 1910. Hanley was the only one of the six towns to be a county borough before the merger; its status was transferred to the enlarged borough. Hanley was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1857 and became a county borough with the passage of the Local Government Act 1888. It is now the city's main shopping centre, the Potteries Shopping Centre containing many high street chain stores.
At one time, there were many coal mines in North Staffordshire. Hanley Deep Pit was opened in 1854. It was the deepest pit in the North Staffordshire coalfield, reaching a depth of 1500 feet. At its peak in the 1930s it employed some 2000 men and boys often producing 9000 tons of coal a week. The pit was closed in 1962 but much of the headgear and spoilheaps were left in situ. Then, in the 1980s, the original site was cleared, landscaped and converted into Hanley Forest Park.
The 1986 Stoke-on-Trent Garden Festival led to the reclamation of large areas of land west of the city centre area – including the former Shelton steelworks, which had been derelict since 1978. Ironically, when the Garden Festival closed, the land remained derelict for some time, before being re-developed partly into public parkland and partly for retail and leisure.
In 2013, a brand new and modern bus station opened in Hanley. This replaced the former bus station, on Lichfield Street. The new bus station is the first stage in the regeneration project which will see the previous bus station demolished, and replaced with a new centre consisting of shops, restaurants and a cinema. The new bus station is smaller than its predecessor, and has seen various routes in and out of the city changed to accommodate the location of the new bus station. The bus station features a sheltered waiting area, Spar shop, cafe and toilets, is covered by CCTV, and has digital timetables showing information on travel times for the day, as well as Now/Next above the entrance to each bay. Access to the station is controlled by automatic doors, at both the pedestrian entrance and coach bays.
The new bus station links Hanley with towns in North Staffordshire, as well as Buxton, Crewe and Stafford. Most services are run by First Potteries, though there are a number of smaller independent operators, such as Wardle Transport, BakerBus, and Arriva Midlands. In addition, National Express Coaches connect Hanley with destinations including London, Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester, with additional seasonal services to holiday destinations. As part of the redevelopment of the town and wider city, a new bus interchange will be built on John Street, allowing the current station to be demolished to make room for further redevelopment of the town.
Hanley no longer has a railway station but there was once one located on Trinity Street, on the Potteries Loop Line, which was opened by the North Staffordshire Railway for passengers on 13 July 1864. The station survived for 100 years – it was closed in 1964, as part of the Beeching Axe, and the land is now a car park.
Hanley also offers several cultural facilities such as the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery (a large ceramics collection, and restored Spitfire), the Victoria Hall, the Regent Theatre, BBC Radio Stoke's Open Centre and studios, while Piccadilly hosts the annual Sanity Fair and French Market events. Hanley is also the location of Stoke Pride, an annual pride event for LGBT people of the city.

Savoy Cinema Memories - Frozen in Time - Cinema from 1927 - Exploring an Abandoned Movie Theater
A look at the old Savoy Cinema building in Newcastle under Lyme. Filmed August 2014.
The Savoy Cinema (originally called the Kings Hall) was Newcastle’s first ever purpose-built picture house and opened on the 10th of February 1910 with a three part epic adventure movie called Monte Cristo. In 1913 the Kings Hall was considered to be the most luxurious cinema in the whole of the Midlands and also the largest it could host over 1000 people for film screenings.
The entrance to the Cinema was via a arcade 13 feet wide and 100 feet long and once inside it comprised of two tiers, the lower tier had a feeling of extra luxury as 300 of the seats were gold coloured tip up style. In 1927 under owner A.S. Hine renovations to the Cinema were completed and the projection equipment was brought right up to date. Mr. Hine then renamed the Kings Hall as the Savoy Cinema and re-opened it on Monday 28th February 1927.
In the 1930s the Savoy became part of the ABC (associated British Picture Corporation LTD) but later closed in 1964 and became a Bingo Hall. But in 1973 students of local high School Called the Edward Orme School organised a petition and got over 4,000 signatures to get the Cinema reopened. Seeing the local demand for a Cinema promoted the owners of the Savoy to use part of the building for a new 200 seater studio cinema at a cost of £55,000. The new smaller version of the Savoy was opened in December 1975. During the 1980s the cinema’s attendance struggled due to the rise of home video and eventually closed in the early 1990s.
Newcastle-under-Lyme is a market town in Staffordshire, England, and is the principal settlement in the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme. It is part of North Staffordshire. In the 2011 census the town had a population of 75,125. The Newcastle part of the name derives from being the location of a new castle in the 12th century. The Lyme section could refer to the Lyme Brook or the extensive Forest of Lyme that covered the area with lime trees in the Middle Ages. The well-known Berlin street Unter den Linden is a cognate of 'under-Lyme'

In This Day & Age Cinemas Have Changed A Lot With No Character & No Real Experience So Anderson Jones Wanted To Recreate What He Loved So Dearly Back In The 80s, He Stuck To His Dream & Spent 32 Years Collecting Cinema Memorabilia & A Further 5 Years On Building The Project, This Is Now What He Has Accomplished.
