Stoke-on-Trent (Staffordshire, England, UK)

Stoke-on-Trent (often abbreviated to Stoke) is a city and unitary authority area in Staffordshire, England, with an area of 36 square miles (93 km2). Together with the neighbouring boroughs of Newcastle-under-Lyme and Staffordshire Moorlands, it is part of North Staffordshire. In 2016, the city had a population of 261,302.

Stoke is polycentric, having been formed by the federation of six towns in 1910. It took its name from Stoke-upon-Trent where the main centre of government and the principal railway station in the district were located. Hanley is the primary commercial centre. The other four towns are Burslem, Tunstall, Longton, and Fenton.

Stoke-on-Trent is the home of the pottery industry in England and is commonly known as the Potteries, with the local residents known as Potters. Formerly a primarily industrial conurbation, it is now a centre for service industries and distribution centres.

Mike Sheron - Stoke City (part two)

Mike Sheron goals - 1996/97

Liverpool born Mike Sheron started his career with Manchester City in the early nineties. An England U21 International, his best season at Maine Road came in 1992/93 when he scored 14 goals. After falling out of favour he joined Norwich City in 1994/95 but scored just four times as the Canaries were relegated from the top flight. In November 1995 he joined Stoke in a player swap deal which saw the unpopular Keith Scott move to Carrow Road in return. The move proved to be a masterstroke by manager Lou Macari. Sheron formed a near telepathic partnership with Simon Sturridge, scoring fifteen times as the Potters reached the First Division play-offs only to lose out to Leicester City. The following season (1996/97) Sheron hit another 24 goals as Stoke finished in mid table. Transfer speculation started to grow in 1997 and he was linked with the likes of Everton, Birmingham City and Queens Park Rangers. Much to the disappointment of supporters he joined QPR of the summer, Stoke picking up a club record £2.75 million in return for his signature. The Potters struggled without his goals and found themselves relegated at the end of the 1997/98 season. Sheron also struggled to hit the same goalscoring form he'd shown at Stoke, scoring 20 goals in 69 games while at Loftus Road. He later moved on to Barnsley (34 goals in 172 games), Blackpool (11 goals in 50 games) and Macclesfield Town (4 goals in 33 games). He eventually retired from professional football at Shrewsbury Town in 2005.

Potteries celebrity Neil Baldwin ('Nello') received the freedom of Newcastle-under-Lyme this week alongside the mascot of Staffordshire Regiment, Watchman V. Dozens of Neil's friends shared their memories of him, and Neil himself reflected on the honour. Watchman V's handler WO2 Greg Hedges also gave his thoughts.
