The Six Towns in the Potteries Documentary Stoke-on-Trent 1960
In 1910 six Potteries towns came together to form the city of Stoke on Trent. Fifty years later we find their individuality and old rivalries still alive and well.
Introduced by a windswept Eric Ball: 50 years ago this was smothered in smoke (actually in March 1960 it still looks pretty smoky) this commemorative film produced by ATV celebrates the six towns that make up Stoke on Trent. Each jostled for prominence in 1910, Burslem going as far as building a new town hall, but lost out to Stoke in the civic race. Hanley has the shops and a new civic centre on the way and Longton the potteries but each retains its historic importance.

Stoke Local Elections 2011
There were large demonstrations outside the Kings Hall Civic Centre as the BNP arrived to hear the election results.
The Potteries 1964 Gone but Not forgot (Hanley and the six towns)DOCUMENTARY
When the swinging 60s hit Stoke its teenagers began to dance the twist and, on the surface at least, the city was thriving in the modern era. But this ATV documentary shows how the six towns that came together fifty years earlier to form Stoke on Trent, are still proud of their separate identities. With this historical backdrop Stoke is trying to modernise and move forward with Hanley as its new civic centre.

Half of all council-funded bus routes in England under threat | ITV News
Nearly half of all council-funded bus routes in England are under threat.
That is the warning from the Local Government Association, which says the ongoing financial squeeze leaves councils with difficult choices.
It fears if the routes are scrapped, vulnerable residents could be left isolated and unsupported.

CCTV footage captures police chasing car before hitting van
Christopher Pedley was being pursued by police through Fenton, Staffordshire, after officers spotted him driving an uninsured car. The 36-year-old was then caught snaking through busy traffic before he 'shot out of a junction' and straight into a van. Pedley drove off from the scene before he was finally stopped and arrested by police after the three mile chase.

Minister appointed to slow national pub closures
Robert Trigg: John Healey has landed the 'dream job' of becoming the first Minister of pubs to help restore pub trading across Britain.
The rate of pubs closing down across the country increased to 52 a week during 2009, and has now began to slow down as Britain moves out of recession.
Deputy leader of Stoke-on-Trent city council, Brian Ward believes the pub is the centre of the community and more should be done by the breweries to keep business going around Stoke.
Cheap alcohol from supermarkets, stricter smoking ban laws and tougher trading regulations have also added to the decline in pub trading.
Robert Trigg reports.

The Labour Party holds all Stoke on Trent constituencies at General Election
It was a triple victory for Labour at the Civic Centre in Stoke-on-Trent as the party managed to hold on to all three Stoke constituencies.
Joan Walley retained her Stoke-on-Trent North seat with 17,809 votes compared to 9,580 for Conservative Andy Large and 7,120 for Liberal Democrat John Fisher.
She was elated, saying: I hope we will have three members of parliament in Stoke on Trent to serve in parliament and give all the help and support this city needs to get it through the recession.
Tristram Hunt beat nine other candidates to land the Stoke-on-Trent Central seat vacated by Mark Fisher.
The historian polled 12,605 votes, while the Liberal Democrats trumped the Conservatives by polling 7,039 votes for candidate John Redfern. Tory candidate Norsheen Bhatti trailed behind with 6,833 votes.
Mr Hunt told his supporters: It has been a tough night for Labour but a good night for Stoke-on-Trent. Stoke is open for business, for new ideas.
Mr Hunt also considered the BNP's presence in Stoke as poisonous politics.
Rob Flello was able to retain his seat at Stoke-on-Trent South.
He attracted 15,446 votes compared with Conservative James Rushtons 11,316 votes, and Liberal Democrat Dr Zulfiqar with 6,323 votes.
Mr Flello, who took to the podium at 4.45am, said: There has been a move away from Labour to Conservative but what matters is there is a job to be done.
We cannot be known around the world because we have got a BNP problem. We have got fantastic people in our city and that is what we should be known for.

There are concerns in Stoke on Trent that if a new civic centre is built it will be a failure and potential debt. Telford has a success story for its own business district.

Labour holds all Stoke constituenies
It was a triple victory for Labour at the Civic Centre in Stoke-on-Trent as they managed to hold on to all three Stoke constituencies.
Joan Walley retained her Stoke-on-Trent North seat with 17,809 votes compared to 9,580 for Conservative Andy Large and 7,120 for Liberal Democrat John Fisher.
She was elated, saying: I hope we will have three members of parliament in Stoke-on-Trent to serve in parliament and give all the help and support this city needs to get it through the recession.
