Japan Travel: Strolling in the Palace's Garden at Shinkinaen Garden, Okinawa Main Island, Okinawa08 Moopon
Shikinaen, located in Okinawa, was the second residence of the Ryukyu kings. It was constructed in the 18th century. The building were relatively simple, wooden palace buildings incorporating the Chinese red tile roofs with a spacious Japanese garden and its a central pond. The garden is meant to be viewed as visitors stroll around. With both the Chinese and Japanese influence, visitors can appreciate Shikinaen’s truly unique Okinawa style.
Shikinaen was completely destroyed in the Battle of Okinawa of 1945. However, a 20 year restoration plan began in 1975. In 2000, it was among the sited registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the title Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu.
From the forest, visitors walk along a stone-paved road, made from Ryukyu limestones to the main entrance. From here, visitors will stroll along a 300 meter circular path to view the garden. There are many interesting parts of the garden, not limited to…
**Ikutokusen—the spring filled with clear water. It is designated as a national monument as it is the birthplace of the red alga
**Stone Bridge: There are two stone bridges which connect to the palace as well a small islet in the middle of the water.
**Udun Palace: built in the 17th century, before the garden and pond, this spacious palace has 15 rooms
**Rokkaku-do: a Chinese-style hexagonal pavilion located on a nearby island

Bio-Luminescent Shrimp Makes These Rocks Look Like They Are Bleeding Blue
Off the coast of Okayama, Japan are boulders that turn electric blue at night. At first glance, it looks something from a sci-fi movie. When you look closer, you’ll notice the patterns of the blue streaks are just like tears streaming down, which make the rocks look like they are weeping or bleeding.

Located in the center of Seto Inland Sea off the coast of Kagawa Prefecture, Shikoku is Awashima Island. Due to its position in the sea, Awashima was an important port for the Shiwaku Navy, an organization of highly skilled Japanese sailors which controlled this region of the Seto Inland Sea.
In 1897, the Meiji Government opened the National Sailor School on Awashima Island. Many skilled graduates went on to work on important ships such as the Kanrin Maru, the first Japanese ship to cross the Pacific Ocean. Though the school closed in 1987 and was transformed into the Awashima Marine Memorial Park, the schoolhouse has been preserved and visitors can view maritime artifacts here.

This star shaped island is truly a beautiful place. Jonoyama Viewpoint offers breathtaking views over the island. And for visitors fortunate to be here at night, a clear star studded sky, unobstructed by tall buildings or pollution can be seen. Looking onto the sea, visitors can see the flickering lights of the sea cruisers and perhaps even towns on nearby islands. But, visitors who visit Awashima from the end of May to the beginning of October may experience the star-like, blue lights that emerge from the sea fireflies (bioluminescent crustaceans) swimming in the waters of the island’s beaches. The best time to view these twinkle stars of the sea is the beginning of autumn.
Awashima is one of the venues of the Setouchi Triennale, a contemporary art festival with multiple venues among the Seto Inland Sea. At the time of festival in autumn 2013, a dozen or so pieces were displayed throughout the island. However, now only has a permanent home here. The art piece is located inside the old marine naval school.
