The first recorded inhabitants of the area were Etruscans dating to around 500 BC. After 15 BC, with Tiberius' victory over the Rhaetians, the area came under the control of the Roman Empire. After the fall of Rome, the area was ruled in turn by Ostrogoths, Alemanni and then the Langobards. Between the 5th and 6th centuries the Langobards built a castle on the rock where the Castello Scaligero stands today. It was destroyed in 590 by the Franks. They subsequently rebuilt it and in 806 hosted King Pepin. After attacks by Hungarians the castle became part of the holdings of the Bishop of Verona.
Malcesine's most prominent landmark is the Castello Scaligero, which has 13th-century fortifications and an older medieval tower in white natural stone. Like the castle of Sirmione at the southern end of the lake, it is named for the della Scala family of Verona who ruled the region in the 13th and 14th centuries, and has the characteristic swallow-tail Ghibelline merlon crenallations. Remnants of an Etruscan tomb have been found within the castle walls. Most of the structures visible today date to the period of the della Scala. The bell of the castle was cast in 1442 and it is still in service.
Located on the lake shore is the Palazzo dei Capitani. It was constructed by the Scala family between the 13th and 14th centuries on older Roman and Romanesque remains. After being reduced to a simple shell, possibly in an earthquake or by a fire, the building became the property of Francesco Mercanti, from Verona and he passed it on to his heirs. On 18 December 1473, it was sold to Alessandro Miniscalchi. By 1477, the building was already remodelled in the Venetian style. In 1618, Verona purchased the building on the behest of the Republic of Venice for use as the residence of the official called Capitano del Lago. Various further remodelling work followed. The Capitano was the head of the Gardesana dell'Acqua, a regional autonomous territory under Venetian rule.
Behind Malcesine rises the 2,218 m (7,277 ft) high Monte Baldo. A two-stage cable car ride—the second leg using one with rotating cabins—takes passengers to 1,750 m (5,741 ft) above sea level. From there the highest point can be accessed by walking a few kilometres to the south along the ridge. Pieve di S. Stefano (or parish church of St. Stephen), first mentioned in the 9th century. Today's baroque church dates to the early 18th century and contains several works of art including the altars of SS. Benigno e Caro (Saints Benigno and Caro, 1769) and of the Beata Vergine delle sette allegrezze (Virgin of the Seven Joys, 1771), as well as a tabernacle and the painting Deposizione attributed to Girolamo dai Libri.

A tunnel structure is an artificial passage, the mountains, water, or other obstacles (usually as a transport route ) passes under. Regionally there are only the shape of the tunnel as the Tunell, see below. A tunnel is - apart from the access and exit - below the ground or water surface. However, aboveground apply according to DIN 1076 with a length of 80 meters enclosures of roads or gallery buildings as a road tunnel. An underpass counts according to DIN 1076 not one of the tunnels if it has been produced in an open design and no longer than 80 meters. Partial serve tunnel to protect the residents from road or rail traffic noise.
A road tunnel is the special design of a tunnel for a road. With 24.5 kilometers length which opened in 2000 Lærdalstunnelen in Norway the world's longest road tunnel. The road- turning tunnel with the highest rotation angle, namely 2070 ° (5.75 turns) is the spiral tunnel Drammen, also in Norway.
The Etruscans built in the 6th Century BC first road tunnel in the Alban Hills. Up to 1000 meters long road tunnel also built by the Romans as early as the time of Christ. The first trans-Alpine road tunnel was the Col de Tende Road Tunnel, one of the longest road tunnel in the world was at the opening of 1882. During the railway construction in the 19th Century many long -vertex and loop tunnels were built, especially in transalpine traffic, continued construction of road tunnels on a larger scale only in the course of construction of motorways after the Second World War a. This has to do with the larger slopes, road vehicles, compared with adhesion railways can overcome the narrow curve radii, which they can enter and with the higher safety requirements for road tunnels.
The system of road tunnels is always more complicated than that of railway tunnels, because a larger cross-section is already required for a two-lane road tunnel as a two-track railway tunnel. In contrast to these road tunnels should always be illuminated from about 100 meters in length on the inside - in Norway but there are also some unlit road tunnels several kilometers in length. Road tunnels require a length of 300 to 500 m special venting system to avoid excessive concentrations of toxic fumes in the tunnel. Since the road traffic accident risk is much higher than for heavy rail, tunnel safety a great deal of attention needs to be paid in road tunnels. Thus, in longer tunnels should be present emergency stopping bays and also exist evacuation tunnel. For safety, also contributes a possible radio reception can be transmitted via the information to the driver.
As Gardesana much of the shore roads around the lake called. The Gardesana leads from Riva del Garda to Salo on Lake Garda along the Gardesana Orientale from Riva del Garda to Peschiera del Garda. The former Italian state road SS 249 Gardesana Orientale is as part of the Gardesana a 1926 completed, relatively wide and free shore road on the east side of Lake Garda, in the south at Peschiera leaves the lake and on to Susano. The Gardesana called Italian state road SS 45 to its name from the part of Salò to Riva del Garda on the west shore of Lake Garda along leads and part of the Gardesana forms. Originally, the SS 45 to of Cremona by Trento.
The Lake Garda ( Italian Lago di Garda or Benaco ), one of the Italian lakes, is the largest lake in Italy. Its ancient name was from about 200 BC to 800 AD Lacus benacus. The name is from an ancient deity called Benaco descended. The lake was the Rhaetian glacier in the last ice age formed, traces of which can be traced today, especially through the moraines to the south bank, for example, in Lonato del Garda, Solferino, Valeggio sul Mincio and Custoza. First settlements of the lakeside dated around the year 2000 BC.
The lake is situated between the Alps in the north and the Po valley in the south. The north of the lake belongs to the region of Trentino-Alto Adige, the West of Lombardy and of the East Veneto. Thus, the three parts provinces Trentino (north), Verona (east) and Brescia (West) administration. The northern shores of the lake is of two-thousand of Lake Garda mountains such as the Monte Baldo fringed; southern shore is already in the plane.
