Stromboli volcano eruption in Italy (July 3, 2019)
A volcano on the Italian island of Stromboli has erupted, killing a hiker, throwing ash high into the sky and enveloping the popular tourist destination in smoke.
Rescue services said Wednesday’s eruption on Mount Stromboli had started fires on the western side of the small Mediterranean island north of Sicily. Fire crews were being called in from nearby locations and a Canadair firefighting plane was already in action.
One tourist who was hiking on the volcano was killed and another injured, local firefighters confirmed.
Tourists often climb to the 924-metre (3,031ft) summit of the volcano and peer into its crater, from which small lumps of molten rock are regularly blasted into the sky.

Stromboli volcano (Italy) erupts in spectacular fireworks - January 2019
A very strong strombolian explosion from Stromboli volcano on the evening of 20 Jan 2019 from the westernmost vents. Glowing bombs are flying far above the horizon, i.e. reach much more than 150 m height, probably close to 250-300 m for some.
Stromboli has been in an elevated state of activity since early January 2019, and there is plenty of evidence that magma is standing high inside its conduits.

Stromboli volcano erupts from multiple vents during phase of elevated activity (Jan 2019)
Stromboli has been in an elevated state of activity since early January 2019, and there is plenty of evidence that magma is standing high inside its conduits. This video shows several eruptions from a total of 6 different vents during a visit on 20 Jan 2019. Several explosions ejected bombs to heights of 200 m or more.
Eruptions occurred on average every 2-3 minutes.

Stromboli, Vulcano and Etna: a trip to the active volcanoes in Italy
The Aeolian Islands north of Sicily with their volcanoes, sulfurous mud baths and steaming fumaroles are a truly interesting destination.
The volcanoes on the island of Stromboli and on Mount Etna in Sicily are still very active - chances to see live eruptions are likely.
We went there for a couple of days. Beside the adventurous tours we enjoyed the local culture, the sun and, of course, the delicious southern Italian food.

The Islands of Stromboli, Lipari and Vulcano, Italy
The Aeolian Islands north of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea are the center of volcanic activity - believed to be largely because of the northward moving African plate meeting the Eurasian plate. And we're not talking plates of pasta. Geologically speaking, this area is hot.
Stromboli
Stromboli has been very active lately and keeps the 800 residents on their toes. It is an island served by hydrofoils from Sicily and other islands and gets a lot of visitors who want to see the active volcano up close and personal.
The town is the stepping off point where hikers can get geared up and enjoy a view The largest eruption in the past 100 years was in 1930 when several people died and houses were destroyed by pyroclastic bombs were set flying by the volcano. The population was terrified and dropped from 5,000 to 400. Talk about weapons of ash destruction!
Guides will take visitors up to the crater to view the flames and rocks being hurled from a safe distance. Another way is to observe by boat although there is a limit of how close you can approach the drop zone. See it at night and you'll realize why it got the names centuries ago as the lighthouse of the Mediterranean.
Lipari
Lipari is the largest of the islands, some 37 square kms. It is said to have been inhabited as far back as 5,000 BC. Pumice, the white frothy volcanic rock, was mined until recently on Lapari. It turns the sea a turquoise blue like a swimming pool and one can still buy pumice to use as an abrasive from stone-washed jeans to cosmetic exfoliates.
Lipari also has obsidian, a volcanic glass high in silica content. Obsidian blade edges are so sharp and thin they are used as scalpel blades.
Lipari ceramics date back to 400 BC such as ancient Greek masks made of terracotta. Some can be seen at the Glasgow museum. Today the art of ceramics are still being done by hand. A simple tile whitewashed is put on a potter's wheel and the artist adds colors. Lots of yellow, blue and bright colors reflecting the natural brilliant colors of the area.
Vulcano
The Romans gave the name to Vulcano which has been the name for those mountains ever since. The last major eruption was 1888.
A large warm mud pool of fango is a popular spot on Vulcano where bathers can sit in warm, muddy sulfurous water which is said to have healing properties for the skin. The adjacent sea has warm springs and bubbly sources which make it like a natural Jacuzzi.
There are black sand beaches and cafes nearby. At one, a unique smashed pizza was like a pizza with a secondary pizza on top. A local, popular salad features cubes of bread, olive oil and with tomato, cucumbers and spices.

At least one tourist has died and another injured after two volcanic explosions rocked the Italian island of Stromboli, north of Sicily, footage from Thursday morning showed.
Firefighting aircraft were dumping water on lava streaming down Mount Stromboli, as tourists and residents were evacuated on boats.
It was a very strong explosion. We saw a gray-black column of smoke rising. Everything darkened a bit, we were afraid, said a Stromboli resident speaking of the volcanic explosions on Wednesday.
According to the reports, the tourist, an Italian, was killed after being hit by falling rocks while hiking with a Brazilian walking partner.
Standing at 924 metres (3,031 feet) high, Stromboli is one of Italy’s three active volcanos.

Stromboli volcano's stunning eruption continues to light up island's sky
The eruption of the Stromboli volcano continued in the early hours of Friday, as life on the small Sicilian island continued as normal.
Explosions from the north-east crater lit up the night sky of the small volcanic island of Stromboli but luckily no damage or injuries had been reported.
The reflection of smoking hot red lava turned the clouds of smoke red, giving the small town on the volcano a fairytale atmosphere.
