Sturgis South Dakota Motorcycle Rally 2018
Hey you guys! Thanks for joining me on another journey. I am in South Dakota again this week, but this time for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. We started out the day in Deadwood, a cool old western town that is known for the famous gunfighter, Wild Bill Hickock's murder on August 2, 1876. The brick roads & preserved architecture make for an appealing ride/walk around town. It is definitely a popular place during Sturgis; so many cool motorcycles and interesting people! This is a place you must visit when going to the motorcycle rally. Another must is Spearfish Canyon. That is an amazing ride! We stopped at Bridal Veil Falls, which is right off the road with plenty of motorcycle parking. We finally made it to downtown Sturgis, and what a madhouse it was--in a good way, of course! ;-) So much going on with thousands & thousands of motorcycles and people of all walks of life. We explored the streets and enjoyed people watching. There were some pretty bad-ass custom bikes to check out! I loved seeing the dogs; they were so cute. A motorcycle rally is definitely a cultural experience all its own! A lot of fun, for sure.

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally 2014
The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is the perfect destination for the ultimate ride.
From cruising through the awesome Black Hills of South Dakota, to meeting fellow riders on Main Street, Sturgis is truly an experience like no other. Not to mention all the sites, sounds, vendors and attractions that make the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally truly legendary. Make the ride!
Top 10 Places to Ride in Sturgis
J&P Cycles staffer Patrick Garvin tells you his top-10 favorite rides in and around Sturgis, S.D. What are your favorite ride destinations?
Here’s ours:
#10 Pactola Reservoir - Probably one of the lesser known places on the list, Pactola Reservoir is on the way from Sturgis over to Keystone. It's a great place to stop and the view is spectacular.
#9 Bear Butte - Bear Butte is located just outside of Sturgis, and offers a nice park and great riding.
#8 Badlands National Park - The Badlands are located out on the edge of the Black Hills and are worth the 45- to 60-minute trip from Sturgis. The road is beautiful and the ride is awesome
#7 Custer State Park and Wildlife Reserve - There is a park entry fee but it's definitely worth the ride. You're going to see buffalo, goats, antelope and more. You name it, they have it there, and it's a beautiful rode to ride.
#6 Mount Rushmore National Memorial - This is an awesome historical place to see, and one of the great things in America that’ll you definitely want to add to your list.
#5 Main Street, Sturgis, S.D. - If you're there for the rally, you’ll definitely want to check out Main Street. Even if you’re there and it’s not rally time, Main Street is a good place to check out for the history, including the Motorcycle Museum on the end of Main Street and places like Weimer’s coffee shop that have been right in the middle of Main Street for 66 years.
#4 J&P Cycles Sturgis Retail Center - We may be biased, but this is really is a great stop if you're in the area. If there’s anything you're going to want or need while on your trip, it’s going to be right there for you.
#3 Needles Highway - The Needles ties back into Iron Mountain Road and is very twisty and curvy, but not too technical. There’s great scenery, and it’ll take you right over to Custer National Park.
#2 Spearfish Canyon - Spearfish Canyon is a great choice because of the accessibility near Spearfish and the road itself. The road is beautiful and the riding is awesome. With switchbacks all the way through and sweepers, this is an absolute great place to ride.
#1 Iron Mountain Road - Iron Mountain Road is one of the more technical places to ride and the scenery is off the charts. It ties really nicely into the Needles, which is another great place to ride, and the corkscrews make it a ton of fun.

LET'S RIDE! - STURGIS MOTORCYCLE RALLY
#CusterStatePark #MtRushmore #Sturgis #motorcycles #Sturgis2019 #SturgisMotorcycleRally
This is HB Maverick and we are in the Sturgis area. Besides going to the events at the motorcycle rally, we will explore the awesome riding roads in the area. Sturgis is nestled in the Black Hills of South Dakota with Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Monument nearby. Also in the area is Custer State Park with the buffalo that you just saw, and the Badlands are nearby as well.
Let’s go!
Custer State Park
We took a morning ride through Custer State Park. This is a very large park with several different roads perfect for motorcycles! We saw goats, deer, and buffalo near and on the road. We rode through lots of twisty mountain roads, one-way roads, and through several tunnels. It was quite the ride!
Mt. Rushmore
Almost everyone who rides to Sturgis makes the stop at Mt. Rushmorel Here you see the carvings of four of our nation’s finest former presidents - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. What an impressive place to visit!
Brewery
During our ride my bike stalled on a turn and my friends disappeared! Well, there is only one thing to do – stop at the nearest brewery and have lunch! Somehow, I got immersed into a bridesmaid party going on at the brewery and all I can say is “What happens in Sturgis, stays in Sturgis!”
Sturgis, South Dakota
Black Hills Harley-Davidson is in Rapid City and is one of the largest Harley dealers in the Midwest. They have tons of vendors setup for the Sturgis Rally and one of the vendors was GoPro! My friend had bought the Hero 7 Black the day before and showed us how smooth the play back was. So, of course I went and upgraded my GoPro as well!
Riding into Sturgis and experiencing the rally was the highlight of the trip. Motorcycles everywhere, lots of beautiful custom motorcycles, biker women, bars with live music every other building it seemed, concert pavilions, and just a whole party-time festival! I may even have had a beer or two!
Conclusion
After three days in Sturgis and the surrounding area it was time to leave my friends and start the solo ride home. They would be taking a route through the Northwest U.S. and my route would take me through Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, and Arizona.
We will see YOU on the next adventure!

The Lowside of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
On this episode of The Lowside, Morgan heads to the 79th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, one of America’s biggest and best biker parties. The city of Sturgis itself isn’t very large, but the rally has expanded to neighboring towns, venues, and campgrounds like the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. Hundreds of thousands of bikers roll through South Dakota every year for this wild rally, so there’s no shortage of good times, with crowds and beautiful roads around the area to escape to for a little peace and quiet if you need it.
Live music, races, bike shows, and more bars than you could ever hit in a week—especially if you’re riding—fill the day-to-day, but rides outside of the city are the real attraction. Whether you head out to Devils Tower National Monument, Custer State Park, or any of the other destinations within a few hours’ ride of Sturgis, you are in one of the best possible areas for riding in the USA and are bound to have a good time.
The Sturgis Buffalo Chip is one of, if not the biggest venue and campground surrounding the Sturgis Rally. Massively popular bands come to play and thousands of riders come to camp, eat, drink, and enjoy the various festivities within the property. We hopped in the cart with the founder of the Chip, Rod Woodruff, better known as Woody, to cruise around and talk about why he does what he does, and how he ensures it will stay fun and fresh for years to come.
From there, we go and ride with freestyle MX legend Carey Hart on his veterans’ charity ride, The Good Ride, and talk to him about what attracts him to this rally and where he hopes to see it go in the future.
Finally, we catch up with motorcycle lifestyle photographer Michael Lichter, who has been covering the event for more than 40 years and published two books on the subject. Michael has a unique perspective, not only having been at the rally for decades, but actively seeking out new and exciting parts of it to tell their story through his pictures, as well as organizing the Motorcycles as Art exhibit every year, highlighting a specific theme of builders and always including some up-and-comers as well as known names.
The rally is always a completely unique experience and a hell of a time. If you like the video, be sure to like, follow and subscribe!
