Internationales Eisenbahn-Nostalgiefest in Mürzzuschlag
160 Jahre Semmeringbahn und 10 Jahre Südbahn Museum, das musste gefeiert werden!
Aus diesen beiden Anlässen fand am 8. Juni 2014 in Mürzzuschlag in der Steiermark ein internationales Eisenbahn-Nostalgiefest mit Sonderzügen aus Wien, aus Graz, aus Slowenien und aus Ungarn statt.
Der Dampfsonderzug mit der ÖBB ErlebnisBahn aus Wien war mit der ÖSEK 52 100 und der 1041.15 bespannt.
Reisen wie zu Kaisers Zeiten war das Motto eines weiteren Sonderzugs aus Wien mit dem Majestic Imperator und den Lokomotiven 1010.003 und 4061.13.
Der Dampfsonderzug aus Graz kam mit der 52.4984, der Sonderzug aus Slowenien mit der BR 664 REAGAN und der aus Ungarn bereits am Vortag mit der NOHAB BR M61.
Die Anfahrt der Züge aus Wien konnte ich am Kalte Rinne-Viadukt (Herzlichen Dank dem Team im Ghega-Museum [ghega-museum.at] für den Logenplatz an der Kalten Rinne und für die liebevolle Verpflegung!) und beim Pettenbachtunnel festhalten, die Abreise beim Adlitzgraben-Viadukt bzw. beim Eichberg.
Die Stars der Veranstaltung waren die Dampf- und Diesellokomotiven, die dem Publikum auf der Drehscheibe des Ringlokschuppens präsentiert wurden.
Ein schönes Fest für alle Eisenbahnfans!

Georg Zwickl nennt sich selbst den ewigen Wächter der Kalten Rinne. Wie es dazu kam, dass er an der Stelle ein Museum zu Ehren von Carl von Ghega gründete, haben wir bei einem Besuch erfahren.

A “Driver’s Eye View” with the world’s longest serving steam locomotive - Graz to Köflach (Austria)
Take a ride with the world's longest serving steam locomotive between the major Austrian city of Graz to the peaceful tranquility of Köflach, passing attractive villages and pleasant countryside along the way. This little engine and its train of heritage carriages are a real credit those responsible for looking after them. The crew kindly allowed me to place a camera on the front of their locomotive giving us all a chance to enjoy the view usually reserved for the footplate crew.
Austrian built engine No.671 was completed in 1860 as a Südbahn Class 23 locomotive, it was sold by BBÖ to the Graz-Köflach railway (GKB) in the 1920’s were it is frequently used to haul steam specials.

Driver's Eye View (Austria) - Mixnitz to Sankt Erhard - Industrial Narrow Gauge Railway
The local train, Mixnitz-Sankt Erhard AG or Breitenauerbahn is located in Austria’s South Eastern state of Styria. Today the 10.38 km long 760 mm gauge line serves the Magnesite Deposits in Breitenau am Hochlantsch. The route starts from the storage warehouses and transhipment sidings adjacent to the ÖBB station of Mixnitz - Bärenschützklamm from where the line follows the course of the Breitenauer Bach a tributary of the Mur (River). The line is never far from the pretty river as it makes its way through the steep sided, wooded valley to the loading facility near Breitenau. Crocodile style (steeple cab) 800 Volt DC Bo’Bo overhead electric locomotives handle trains on the main line these days with a tiny two-axle electric locomotive assisting with shunting operations a Mixnitz. The first passenger train on the original 10.7 km long railway ran in 1913 between Mixnitz and Sankt Erhard, although the primary purpose of the line was for the transportation of materials from the Magnesite Plant near Breitenau to the ÖBB transhipment sidings at Mixnitz.
Passenger traffic declined over the years with the last train running on 31st July 1966. In 1970, the route was shortened to 10.38 km as the passenger stations at either end were no longer required. In recent years the “Friends of the Breitenauerbahn Association” have organised Nostalgia Passenger trains to run on selected weekends between May and September.

Semmering Railway - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage site of Semmering Railway is one of the world's first true mountain railways, and runs about 40 kilometres between Gloggnitz and Murzzuschlag. Incredibly, for a mountain railway built in the 1840s, it's still largely in use today, with its fascinating mix of curved viaducts, iron bridges, tunnels and covered galleries. We used the modern train to journey between Graz and Vienna, though unfortunately it was difficult to actually see the engineering from on the train itself.

Höllental Electric Railway (Austria) - Passenger & line-side views - Payerbach to Hirschwang
In this video we take another look at the the narrow gauge (760 mm) Höllental Railway situated in Lower Austria. Our train starts its journey from Payerbach, a short walk from the (ÖBB) Semmering Railway station of “Payerbach Reichenau”. Our little train runs for approximately 5 kilometres to “Hirschwang” via the attractive market town of “Reichenau an der Rax”. Trains operate from a 550 volt overhead power supply.
The railway was originally opened in 1918 to serve the Hirschwang paper mill, by 1982 both freight and passenger operations had ceased. In 1979 the Austrian Society for Local Railways (ÖGLB) began operating passenger trains for tourists on summer weekends. As the only operator after 1982, ÖGLB assumed responsibly for maintaining the railway, although the line is still owed by Payerbach Hirschwang GmbH.
