Tatari-gami Sudo Jinja Shrine Kyoto Japan

Japanese Shinto Shrine in Kyoto/Shimogoryo Shrine
【Shimogoryo Shrine】
Shimogoryo Shrine originated when eight divine spirits including the Emperor Sudo (the imperial prince Sawara) were deified at Izumoji area (north part of Kyoto Imperial Palace). They all had died in unfortunate circumstances, and in those days it was wildely believed that natural disasters and epidemics were caused by revengeful spirits of those people. Rites called Goryoe were often held in order to calm such spirits.
It is believed that this shrine was named Shimogoryo Shrine because it was at first located to the south of the Goryo Shrine(Shimo means south in Kyoto).
Afterwards, the shrine frequently changed its location, and was transferred to its present position in 1590 following the order of Hideyoshi Toyotomi. From old times, it has been worshipped as the tutelary deity of the Imperial Palace of Kyoto.
The main temple was constructed in 1791 through the relocation of the naishi-dokoro (a building where the mirror of a god is set in place) of the temporary imperial palace. And it is said that the front gate was moved from the former Kenreimon gate in the palace.

Sudo-jinja
Sudo-jinja
The city of Kyoto throngs with visitors, yet there are still a few places that lie off the beaten track. One of them is the mysterious shrine of Sudo-jinja, barely known among outsiders. A forest filled with dim and misty light stretches from the outskirts of Kyoto; here, a number of shrines are hidden among the trees. The quiet presence of this place conceals a strange and dark history; this shrine was built to placate the spirit of Sawara Shinno, who was sentenced to banishment on the remote island of Awaji after being wrongfully accused of rebellion, and starved himself to death rather than go. A walk through this atmospheric forest is an experience in itself.

Japanese Shinto Shrine in Kyoto/Kamigoryo-Jinja Shrine
【Kamigoryo-Jinja Shrine】
Kamigoryo-Jinja Shrine deifies thirteen divine spririts including the Emperor Sudo (the imperial prince Sawara). In this place there used to be a temple called Kami- Izumodera, which was originally established as a family temple for people in the neighborhood. It is believed that on the occasion of the transfer of the capital to Kyoto in 794, eight people who had died in unfortunate circumstances during that period were deified in th form of divine spirits as the guardian deities of the new capital following a direct request by the Emperor Kammu. Thereafter, five enshrined deities have been added, due to the wish of the Emperor Meiji.
In the Heian Period (794-1192), it was widely believed that natural disasters and epidemics were caused by revengeful spirits, and rites for the spirits of the dead were often held in order to calm such spirits. This shrine became famous as the shrine for ceremonies to drive away such spirits. The shrine gained favor from the royal court as well as from the ordinary people, and was especially worshipped by the Imperial family as the guardian deity of the Imperial Palace. This explains why there are a lot of items offered by the Imperial Family still kept here, including portable shrines and ox carts.
The battle that occurred in this area on Janiary 18, 1467 was the beginning of the Onin War, a great civil war that lasted for ten years and reduced Kyoto to ashes.

Fushimiinari-taisha Shrine - Kyoto - Climb to the top (very shaky)
I went on a trip to Kyoto and this was my adventure to the top of a famous Shinto shrine called Fushimiinari-taisha. Apparently there are over 1000 shrine posts/gates, but it sure felt like there were even more. Due to time constraints, I actually only had time to walk through about 2/3 of the shrine halls so you will have to imagine how big this shrine really is. I hope to go back one day and complete the entire thing. I recommend Kyoto to anyone traveling to Japan!

Visiting the Miyajidake Jinja Shrine at New Year
Miyajidake Jinja Shrine(宮地嶽神社) is a Shinto shrine located in Fukuoka, Japan.
Visiting the shrine at New Year is very important for most Japanese. It's called Hatsumode(初詣). Japanese visit the shrine to thank the Kami for protecting them last year and to ask for blessings for the new year.
At New Year the shrines are very crowded.Usually one million Japanese visit the Miyajidake Jinja Shrine over the New Year period.
Shiramine Jingu Shrine Kyoto Japan
