Mt. Hood Summer Skiing - Gapers, Racers, and Broken Legs
Mt Hood is the only place in the United States where public, lift serviced skiing is available all summer. We woke up at 4:30 to arrive at the mountain around 6:30. First, we rode the Magic mile chair up to the base of the Palmer lift, and from there where lifted to the top of the Palmer glacier. Skiing in the public lane, we ripped some turns through the slush. The slushy snow is fast, maybe a little to fast because later in the day, one of the boys took a gnarly crash and broke his leg. It truly was a Mt. Hood Summer

Cross-country skiing in Downtown Portland
Portland, Oregon's funky spirit is on display during the Stumptown Birkebeiner- an impromptu weather-triggered version of an 800 year old Norwegian cross-country ski race. Whenever a good snow storm is predicted for Portland, Win Goodboddy and his friends put the word out : if snow covers the streets, it's time for anyone and everyone to meet at Powell's books (at 9am!) for a ski race through the streets of northwest Portland. This story is from Oregon Field Guide on Oregon Public Broadcasting.
Too soon for Timberline to Town? Summer 2019
It's the 2nd week of Summer and practically July. There is definitely snow on Mt Hood, but we are going to find out how T2T is running. Can we mountain bike it, or should we have brought our skis?

We highly recommend the Mt Hood Express shuttle. A couple bucks and you have a ride to the top from Government Camp or Rhododendron. Pretty sweet deal, if you ask me. They even have a massive bike rack/trailer for your whip.

NYSEF Mt Hood Camp
June 30th through July 11th, 2012
Alex, Josh, Anthony, Mason, Gavin and I ventured 3000+ miles across the country to ski and play on the glaciers at Timberline, hike and swim in the Mt Hood State Parks and National Forests, white water raft down a stretch of the Deschuttes River, and so much more. The trip proved to be an all around exploration of North Weastern Oregon, our talents, friendships, inspirations, and beyond. I hope you all enjoy this 11 minute synopsis of our time at camp.

Faster than it looks. And a lot more fun. Fasted the gps showed was 30mph and my fastest run was right about 1 minute I think. They said the fastest was 44 seconds. That's crazy cause we were flying on our fastest runs! Saw some good crashes too. Stupid girl crashed into someone and did a face plant slide.

White Wild and Scenic River!
The White Wild and Scenic River lies east of the Cascade Range and south of the Columbia River Gorge. Originating on Oregon’s majestic Mt. Hood, the river flows for approximately 53 miles to its confluence with the Deschutes River just above Sherar's Bridge. All but the 0.6-mile-long section at White River Falls is designated wild and scenic. The U.S. Forest Service manages the upper segments, and the Bureau of Land Management managers the lower segments.
The river flows through a wide variety of life zones. The corridor's broad diversity of plant species ranges from subalpine to desert steppe, supporting many sensitive and unique plant species found only in this part of Oregon. The climate is hot and dry with as little as 10 inches of annual precipitation at the river mouth, where vegetation consists mostly of shrubs, forbs and grasses.
The river's unique hydrology includes its color in late summer and early fall and its isolation from other rivers. White River Falls isolates the watershed aquatically, providing an environment in which indigenous aquatic species, such as the White River race of redband rainbow trout, have evolved.
The White River offers outstanding opportunities for a wide variety of recreational activities. These include Nordic skiing, photography, camping, rugged hiking and nature and wildlife observation. The river canyon's outstanding solitude and hiking opportunities attract visitors within and outside the region.
White River scenery is regionally important and widely appreciated in all seasons. Outstanding views include those within the corridor from the White River; the campgrounds and dispersed sites; the river corridor from Timberline Lodge, its lower parking area and Timberline Trail; views of Mt. Hood and views into the rugged canyon between the National Forest boundary and Tygh Valley.
The White River area supports a diversity of species, including northern spotted owls, harlequin ducks and peregrine falcons. Elk and various raptors are also present. Wild turkey populations are the highest in northern Oregon. Silver gray squirrels are abundant. Spring and summer are the best times to see Lewis woodpeckers. This is a popular hunting area during the fall, and feeding stations provide good deer and elk viewing during winter.

Mount Hood Meadows
Mount Hood Meadows is one of the largest ski resorts in the U.S. state of Oregon and the largest ski resort near Mount Hood. It is located about 67 miles east of Portland, and 35 miles from Hood River along Oregon Route 35. It has both Alpine and Nordic ski areas and offers night skiing, lessons and equipment rentals. There are no overnight accommodations at Mount Hood Meadows itself, but a number of hotels and motels nearby offer shuttle services to the resort.
In 1964, Mount Hood National Forest announced that a feasibility study was underway for a new ski area on the east side of Mount Hood. A group of Hood River businessmen, incorporated as Hood River Meadows, Inc., had raised $3,500 to finance the study. The group included Jack L. Baldwin of Cooper Spur Ski Area, L. R. Steeves, Dr. J. Allan Henderson, and Roland B. Leavens, among others.
On February 28, 1966after more than two years of publicitythe Forest Service accepted a bid from another group including John Gray, and former Mount Hood Skibowl shareholders William Rosenfeld, Russell McJury and Shepard Wilson. The permit was for two ski lifts, one T-bar lift, a rope tow, and a day lodge. The first runs were cleared late summer 1966 and the Forest Service built the two mile entrance road from Bennett Pass. Highway 35 was in the midst of a four year straightening project to remove the quaint, tight curves and make winter snow removal practical. Until it was finished mid-1968, skiers had to drive through Hood River to reach the ski area.
Skiers began using the resort named Mount Hood Meadows in December, 1967. Resort operators in Government Camp were uneasy due to Meadow's intense publicity and the ultra-modern facilities. This concern lasted only a few weeks, as long lift lines redistributed disenchanted guests to the other areas. The original paved parking lot had a capacity of about 330 autos, but was enlarged by 1974 to hold about a thousand.
The T bar was installed on the west side of the lodge, probably in the lower portion of the current Daisy chairlift. The #1 chairnow called Blueand #2 chaircalled Yellow until 2007 until being renamed 'Stadium', also the name of a central run below the liftprovide access to intermediate and advanced skill terrain. It was one of the two original lifts when Mount Hood Meadows opened in January, 1968. At that time it was referred to simply as 'The North Lift', rising 548 vertical feet from the base area and accessing terrain in the northern portion of the ski area’s permit area. The name was later changed to Yellow reinforced with painting of the chairs. For the 2007-08 season, a new drive and chairs removed the color; a naming contest resulted in it becoming 'Stadium' which hosts many ski racing events each season. The new name tributes recreational skiers and snowboarders who run gates or participate in events. #3 chair was built in 1968, now Easy Rider, was called Red before the chairs were upgraded around 1995. In 1972, the T-bar was removed to build chair #4.
Chair #5, Texas, was finished August, 1974 and was complicated by the deep snowpack present making it necessary to bulldoze and excavate snow to place some tower footings. Texas was replaced by Cascade Express, a quad detachable, in 1993. The top of Cascade Express is the highest point at the area, however additional snowcats take people nearly 1,500 feet up to 5 more double-blacks. The salvaged Hood River Meadows lift; replaced by the Hood River Express, was installed in 1996 as the Heather Canyon lift.
The Hood River Meadows opened in 1976, and was upgraded to a high speed Poma quad in 1995. Chair #6 was heavily lobbied against by conservation groups and outdoor clubs including appeals to the Region Forester and the National Forester by the Sierra Club.
