Mount Hood snow resorts grappling with climate change
Scientists, meteorologists and ski resort employees agree that climate change could have devastating effects on the winter sports industry. The Pacific Northwest's highest mountains and volcanoes will really see shifts in the second half of this century. KGW News' Maggie Vespa reports from Mount Hood, Oregon, on some of the concerns and impacts of changing climate conditions.

Skiing Mount Hood, Oregon's High Point
A condensed edit of skiing Oregon's spectacular Mount Hood via the main route and old chute. Ski down upper part of Zig Zag Glacier. Skied on a sunny May day with plenty of snow. Firm conditions up top made for delicate turns. This video is part of Skiing States where I have videos on skiing on all snowy state high points. See the article on this descent at TreasuredHeights dot com.

Mt Hood History R6 Death, Trillium, Summit Meadow Cemetery
It is estimated that around 3,000 people died over the many years of westward migration on the Oregon Trail. Many were buried along the 2,000 mile route between Independence, Missouri and Oregon City, Oregon. Four of the early Oregon pioneers were buried at the small cemetery at Summit Meadows.
This video was recorded in July 2013, during a history bicycle tour organized by the Emilio Trampuz of the Mountain High Snowsport Club in Portland, Oregon.
Thanks to: Kurt Wilke and Scott Stepan for the video clips, and other photo contributors: Bruce McGavin, Chuck Westergren, Dan Lane, John Davis, Kristine Canham, Scott Stepan, and Lisa Miller.
Mt Hood History R9 Laurel Hill
Laurel Hill is actually a 4 mile long ridge extending westward from Government Camp. But most people think of Laurel Hill as being only a hill that got isolated from the rest of the long ridge when modern highway 26 blasted its way through it in a couple of places.
This part of Laurel Hill is located just 2 miles west of Government Camp. It was the steepest and rockiest part of the Oregon trail, where the pioneers had to descend down a long chute, using ropes to slow the wagons, using chains on their wagon wheels, and/or cutting a tree down and using it as an anchor behind the wagon.
According to historian Jim Tompkins, there were actually 5 such chutes that were used over time. When the soil was too eroded at one place, they would move a bit further west and pick a slightly different route. The first of these chutes was very near the Mirror Lake trailhead (near Yocum Falls). The most well know to this day is chute #3, which is marked with a historic marker on nearby highway 26, and also marked with an interpretive sign just a sort hike up a set of stairs from the modern highway to the old abandoned Mt. Hood highway.
This video show how to find the original Barlow Road approach to chute #3, and it shows the view from the top of the chute.
Thanks to Lloyd Musser, curator, Mt. Hood Museum in Government Camp, for access to the museum's archives, for maps, pioneer diaries, and more.
