This 3.5-mile-wide chasm of basalt, with a drop of 400 feet, was left high and dry thousands of years ago as the last of several Ice Age floods swept through the Grand Coulee. This is one of the most extraordinary landscapes to be found along the Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail.
Begin your journey with a visit to the historic Vista House Overlook, which offers panoramic views of Dry Falls. Watch for wildlife, the plunge pools surrounding this dormant Ice Age waterfall are now home to a series of tranquil groundwater-fed lakes, an oasis for wildlife and wildlife viewing

The city of Coulee Dam lies on the northern upstream side of Grand Coulee Dam. It straddles both sides of the Columbia River, both above and below the dam. The builders of the houses and businesses lying at the base of the spillway appear to have placed their faith in the sturdiness of a dam built to last thousands of years!
Dry Falls
Considered the world’s greatest waterfall without water, Dry Falls is the “skeletal remains” of a waterfall that once cascaded nearly 400 feat, filling a chasm 3.5 miles wide. The water came from the cataclysmic Missoula Floods at the end of the last ice age. Today, Dry Falls can be visited by a viewpoint off Route 17, or via trails and roads inside Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park.

Most People Don’t Know The Fascinating Story Behind Washington’s Dry Waterfall. If you live in Washington, you may have heard of Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park in Coulee City. You may have even heard that Dry Falls used to be, well, not dry. But the story behind this beautiful area is actually pretty fascinating.
Between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago, glaciers moved south through North America during the end of our last Ice Age. An ice sheet dammed the Clark Fork River near Sandpoint, Idaho, causing a big portion of Western Montana to flood. Around the same time, Glacial Lake Columbia was formed on the Columbia River, which was dammed with ice. The flood swept past Western Montana, Northern Idaho and much of Eastern Washington, carving the coulees and Channeled Scablands from the basalt. The flow of that flood water was estimated to be 10 times the flow of all rivers in the world combined. The sudden flooding put parts of these states under hundreds of feet of water in only a few days. This extraordinary flooding is what greatly enlarged the Grand Coulee and Dry Falls in a short period of time. Palouse Falls was also formed by these floods. Visiting Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park allows you to get an up close and personal view of the power of Mother Nature. The park is located on State Highway 17 just south of Highway 2 in the middle of the state. You can make a day trip to Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park happen no matter what part of Washington you call home. That being said, it would probably be a long day, so you’re free to spend the night a few miles from the park at the Sun Lakes Campground.

Only understanding the cataclysmic events that happened here at Dry Falls State Park in Washington State can you fully appreciate the topography of this area. The land now sits parched and desolate but once was home to the largest falls in the world - 10 times longer than Niagara Falls and nearly twice as high. Massive vortices from torrential currents scoured potholes unlike anything in the world. Boulders the size of large buildings were swept away as far as the Pacific Ocean.
