Sungai Petani (abbreviated Sg. Petani or SP; Chinese: 双溪大年; Tamil: சுங்கை பட்டாணி) is a town in Kuala Muda District, Kedah, Malaysia. Sungai Petani is Kedah's largest town and is located about 55 km south of Alor Setar, the capital of Kedah, and 33 km northeast of George Town, the capital city of the neighbouring state of Penang.
Due to its close proximity to Penang, Sungai Petani is also part of Greater Penang, Malaysia's second largest conurbation, with the town's logistical needs being served by Penang's well developed transportation infrastructure. Sungai Petani has experienced heavy industrialisation since the 1990s, when Japanese and other international firms began to set up manufacturing plants around the town.

Sungai Petani Sammaditthi Meditation Grove (SMG)
Sungai Petani (abbreviated Sg. Petani or SP) is a town in the state of Kedah, in the northern part of Peninsular Malaysia. Sungai Petani is the second largest town in Kedah after Alor Star. The name Sungai Petani has its roots from sungai meaning river and petani meaning farmer in the Malay language. Sungai Petani in full means Farmer's River, due to the huge concentration of paddy fields and farmers in the state. The word petani may also refer to Pattani, a city in present day Thailand in which the river were once connected to. Even the old spelling of Sungai Petani was Sungei Patani, without any reference to farming.

They are also trained under a famous Meditation Master Venerable Ajahn Suk Sirisuvano from Kg Pong, Klian Intan, Perak, Malaysia. SMG is helmed by Ven. Ajahn Sanlim Dipako and Ven. Ajahn Balavuddho. It is located at Sungai Pasir Chinese Cemetery, Sungai Petani, Kedah.

Sungai Petani, Kedah is an hour away from Penang. Visited Clock Tower and icon of down town. Then headed to Tanjung Dawai to shop salted fish, crossing the sea in 10 minutes by boat to Pantai Merdeka. Unique red rock at the beach, relaxing and enjoy culinary. Seafood lunch at Mak Njang resto for nice fresh seafood. After, we went to Candi Lembah Bujang and smelter archeology site, ended the trip at Merbok River Cruise site

24 HOURS IN SUNGAI PETANI
Due to its close proximity to Penang (only half an hour drive from Port Weld, Penang) we decided that it would be a great idea to go to Sungai Petani or SP, and spend our night there.
Sungai Petani is surprisingly largish town and there isn’t a lot to do, but it’s likeable enough.
