Our American Vacation: Japanese Sunken Garden
Mike, Chris & Mel are my family members, that happen to live in Australia. These series of videos covers their vacation in the Southwest region of America. The series will follow their adventures from shopping in Austin, to dining in a Las Vegas casino. This is an outsider’s view of America. Always, my goal is to introduce the positive but quirky side of things we Americans consider normal.
Thought I just posted this, this is the first episode of the series.
Mike, Chris & Mel will visit the Japanese Sunken Garden in midtown San Antonio.
Isamu Noguchi Sunken Garden イサムノグチ NY パブリックアート
Behind Federal Hall and down the street on the main plaza of Chase Manhattan Bank, if you peer over the circular railing you will espy a beautiful sunken garden designed by Isamu Noguchi. Several basalt rocks and a main, central waterfall lend elegance and beauty to this chaotic area. It is worth making a visit to if you are downtown.

THE PATH OF WILDNESS
The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast's track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination
The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.

Japan Travel: Unique Fun Sculptures to Explore and Play at Moerenuma Park, Hokkaido 20
Japan Travel: Unique Fun Sculptures to Explore and Play at Moerenuma Park, Hokkaido 20
Located in the outskirts of Sapporo, Hokkaido lies Moerenuma Park (モエレ沼公園). Surrounded by marsh, this large park was designed by the renowned Japanese American sculptor Isamu Noguchi. The park’s the concept was to create a “living” sculpture for people to interact with nature. The park has small sculptures for children to run to while they played under the great blue sky. Though designed by Noguchi, Noguchi was unable to see his masterpiece as he passed away shortly after the plans were completed.
The park is filled with spectacular man-made features. Visitors have fun exploring these unique structures. For example, Mount Moere, built for the park, has a height of 62 meters. In addition to having great views of the park and its surrounding area, in the winter, it is transformed to a ski/sled area. Play Mountain is a smaller mountain with a height of 30 meters. The path to peak is more gentle but quite fun. And Hidamari, a glass pyramid with 3 floors has an atrium, information center as well as an Isamu Noguchi gallery.
Children will enjoy the easternmost forest area as there are creative play areas here. The Sea Fountain has daily shows from late April to mid October. There are three to four shows per day with the duration of the show being either 15 minutes or 40 minutes. The play area also has a man-made beach named Moere Beach. The beach is opened to public from early June to mid September. Visitors can play here from 10am to 4pm on all days except Thursdays, when the beach is closed. In addition, visitors can rent bicycles for 100 yen per hour from late April to early November.
