A charter with Sunlight On Water brought us to Kahului Bay of Big Island Hawaii near Kona. There, we swam with wild dolphins.

I was going to call it How tourists die in Hawaii but, didn't want to scare people from coming here. This is White Sands Beach Park. Also known as Magic Sands, Tragic Slams and more. Located on Ali'i Dr. Large surf generally takes all the sand away in the winter. Sometimes in the summer too if we get a large enough WSW swell. There are menacing rocks just underneath that sand. Best know how to go over the falls of a wave correctly or you'll be getting to know our local emergency room personnel. By the way, they are very nice at the ER.
This day we had a moderate SSW swell. Most often tourists neglect to watch what's going on before venturing out into the ocean. Even when the lifeguard warns people they still go out and either get injured or need to be rescued.
When the surf is pounding dislocated shoulders neck and back injuries are common here. Lifeguards had to do a few rescues. Sometimes the fire Dept parks at the street just waiting for the next victim.
Myself, I surfed 3 hours elsewhere that day and was on my way home and decided to stop and get some of the action on my GoPro Hero 3+.
The video starts out in the narrow view. Not as sharp as in medium or wide. Also shot in Protune flat at 60fps. 1080p so, watch at the highest setting. Was hoping for it to look better. Maybe next time. Sun was in and out.
Be sure and subscribe to my blog for future photo and video updates.

Hawaiian Grown TV - Kona Sea Salt - Mera Pharmaceuticals
Kona Sea SaltTM is entirely hand tended, from the moment our deep seawater arrives on-site, until your order of this unique, gourmet sea salt is delivered to your door step.
The salt is hand-harvested after our unique deep seawater naturally evaporates, in about three weeks. Unhurried evaporation within our closed drying system under the bright Hawaiian sun provides ideal conditions for the characteristic, pure white Kona Sea SaltTM crystals to form. They are gently scooped into buckets, and wheeled to covered wooden hoppers; here, any remaining moisture drains from the salt. This liquid is a concentrated brine called nigari*, or bitterns, and we collect it at this time.
Our salt is hand-cleaned with forceps and patience to exacting standards, then packed into 10kg bags for wholesale.
Kona Sea SaltTM destined for our retail product line is oven-dried on site in accordance with State of Hawaii health requirements, then hand-packaged, hand-labeled, and readied for shipping. Whether it's a single grinder, or full pallets shipped by sea, we make certain every order of Kona Sea SaltTM arrives as quickly and affordably as possible from our Kona production site.
Why do we produce our salt entirely by hand? Sustainability is important to Mera Pharmaceuticals, Inc. By subscribing to the principle of 'hand-made' quality, our company also ensures employment for its dedicated staff.

Big Island Hawaii. Part 49. Kawaihae Sunset.
January 2010. No music no edit just sunset.
Kawaihae is an unincorporated community on the west side of the island of Hawaiʻi in the U.S. state of Hawaiʻi, 35 miles (56 km) north of Kailua-Kona. Its harbor includes a fuel depot, shipping terminal and military landing site. Outside of the man-made breakwall of the harbor is a popular surf spot and the Pua Kailima o Kawaihae Cultural Surf Park. The small town features a handful of restaurants and art galleries. To the north of the harbor is the Kawaihae Canoe Club and a small boat ramp. To the south is Puʻukoholā Heiau national historic site, built by King Kamehameha I in 1791. Also to the south is the smaller Mailekini Heiau and the Hale o Kapuni Heiau (shark heiau), which is submerged.
The United States Army Corps of Engineers dredged the harbor and built the breakwall between 1957 and 1959. In 1970 construction of a small boat harbor began to the south of the main harbor entrance by several institutions under the name of Project Tugboat. It was designed as a test of the use of high explosives to create harbors in hard substrate and as a proof of the concept that small nuclear charges could be used for civil works projects. Over 100 tons of conventional explosives (roughly equivalent to the smallest nuclear charge that could be built at that time) were buried in the Kawaihae reef and detonated to clear the basin and the entrance. It is the home of Kawaihae Canoe Club. (wikipedia)
Kona Beach Retreat Kailua Kona Hawaii Vacation Rental-- oceanfront view from lanai
This video was taken of the shoreline from the upstairs lanai of Kona Beach Retreat at Kailua Kona Hawaii Vacation Rental Beach House. The surf is about average. When the waves are higher, locals will surf in front of the unit. When the water is calmer, snorkelers and spear-fishers with enter the water from the rocks. This requires a great deal of knowledge of the coastline, however, so visitors should enter the water in the protected cove just on the other side of rocks on the right.
The water is crystal clear, all the time. If you wear polarized sunglasses, you can actually see the tropical fish swimming just before the waves crest! We call it land snorkeling!

The Evans Estate- on historic Keauhou Bay, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
Before you enter the grounds of the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa, you barely see on your right a rock wall and wood gate. When you enter the sliding gate, you discover what seems like a secret sanctuary. A vast property on the ocean with three houses at a distance. You are living your adventure in what feels like old Hawaii. The romance of Hawaii is captured in the sounds of the birds, the colors and smells of the vegetation, the ocean breezes, the view of the Bay and Pacific Ocean at a distance, the sun setting over the blue waters. Relax under a mango tree or even better on the large lawn next to your private swimming cove. Maybe you will never leave this paradise found during your stay.
There are three renovated houses covering only 15% of the estate compound. Although they all have modern amenities, the design and materials are reminiscent of old hawaii. Big Island Hawaii. Part 2. Kohala Orientation.
December 2009.
Music by: Lyman.
The area was named after the dominating geological feature Kohala Mountain, the oldest of Hawaiʻi Island's five major volcanic mountains. The current districts cover the north and western sides of the mountain, 20°7′55″N 155°47′38″W. It was one of the five ancient divisions of the island called moku.
The natural habitats in Kohala range across a wide rainfall gradient in a very short distance - from less than 5 inches (130 mm) a year on the coast near Kawaihae to more than 150 inches (3,800 mm) year near the summit of Kohala Mountain, a distance of just 11 miles (18 km). Near the coast are remnants of dry forests, and near the summit is a cloud forest, a type of rainforest that obtains some of its moisture from cloud drip in addition to precipitation. This precipitation allowed the northeast coast to be developed into sugarcane plantations.
King Kamehameha I, the first King of the unified Hawaiʻian Islands, was born in North Kohala west of Hāwī, at an ancient site called the Moʻokini Heiau, preserved within Kohala Historical Sites State Monument. The original Kamehameha Statue stands in front of the community center in Kapaʻau, and duplicates are found at Aliʻiolani Hale in Honolulu, and in the US Capitol in Washington, D.C.
Other parks include Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area, Samuel Spencer Beach, Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site, Lapakahi State Historical Park. and kēōkea Beach County Park. The end of Akoni Pule Highway (Hawaii state route 270) provides access to Pololū Valley. The Hawaii Belt Road connects in the southern end of the Akoni Pule Highway to Kona in the south and Hāmākua to the east.
Kohala has two small airports. Upolu Airport is on Upolu Point at the northern tip of the island. Waimea-Kohala Airport is south of the town of Waimea, Hawaii County, Hawaii.
Waimea is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hawaiʻi County, Hawaiʻi, United States. The population was 7,028 at the 2000 census. Since each U.S. state cannot have more than one post office of the same name and there are many 'Waimeas' on the islands of Hawaiʻi, the official USPS name for Waimea is Kamuela.
Waimea is the largest town in the interior of the Big Island, and is the center for ranching activities and paniolo culture. The Parker Ranch in and around Waimea is the largest privately-owned cattle ranch in the US, and the annual Fourth of July rodeo is a major event.
Waimea is also home to the headquarters of two astronomical observatories located on Mauna Kea, the W. M. Keck Observatory and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. (wikipedia)
