Sunny Cove Sea Kayak Grand Day Adventure
August 17, 2018 - We set our at 7:30 in the morning from Seward Bay on a small charter boat for a 60 mile journey into the Kenai Fjord National Park. The goal point was the Holgate Arm of the Aialik Bay. On reaching the arm, we off loaded onto a rocky beach that was formed by Glacier movement and volcanic activity of the past million years and prepared to take Sea Kayaks up to the face of the Holgate Glacier.
It took around two hours of paddling our two person kayak to reach within a half mile of the glacier face. the entire trip left us in amazement at its size and natural beauty. by the time we got to the safe viewing distance, its mass showed its generations, and it voiced its power as it cracked and caved its layers. The deep blue color glowed from its density and ability to block the other colors of the suns rays. All week we had worried about the trip as the rain and clouds never left the forecast, but so far the day was filled with sunshine and warmer weather, a definite blessing. the wind flowing down from the top of the mountain, over the vast glacier left a chill that could have been unbearable without the suns warmth that day.
We finally had a few minutes to stop paddling, and sit still in our kayaks listing to nature. A group of seagulls, a few puffins attempting to launch from their watery airstrip, a sea otter breaking a clamp on its belly, and more crackling of the glacier face. The sounds and sights were complementary and provided an atmosphere of complete peace. Stephanie drifted with the tide toward the face of the glacier, a new area for her spirit to explore, and a prayer from us that she is at peace.
