Classical Gardens of Suzhou
This video explores the classical gardens of Suzhou, which are considered to be some of the most beautiful gardens in China.
Suzhou Garden Museum
In order to commemorate the 2,500' anniversary year of Suzhou, a Gardens Museum was established inside the Zhuozheng Garden. Its buildings use the former residential structures of the garden. The southern part of the museum adjoins Northeast Street; the north is connected to the flower gardens of the Zhuozheng Garden. The whole covers 1,696 square meters, with an architectural space of 1,350 square meters. The exhibitions in this museum mainly introduce the history of Suzhou's ancient gardens, plus their current conditions and the technology of building gardens. There are four exhibition halls.
The first describes the objective reasons for basing such superlative gardens in Suzhou: the preconditions, including mountains and rivers, the ancient history, the flourishing economy, the confluence of peoples and the many generations of skilled artisans.
The second describes the history of the gardens. This gives a comprehensive overview of their development and progress. The gardens began in the Spring and Autumn periods of the Zhou dynasty, long before China was unified in 221 BC. By the time of the Wei, Jin and the North and South dynasties, temples and private families were creating different kinds of gardens. In the Song and Yuan dynasties, piled up rocks became the rage, in the Ming and Qing eras garden pavilions flourished.
The third hall introduces the contours and styles of Suzhou's ancient gardens as they are today, as well as the international influence of these gardens.
The fourth introduces garden construction. This reflects the many-layered approach of Suzhou's gardens the layering of mountains, water, buildings, flowers, trees. All are blended together to form the four great traits of a garden. Traditional artistic constraints are used to create both poetic meaning and visual results.
The main displays in this museum are models that show arrangements of gardens, especially those that no longer exist. There are twenty-four such displays, including Suzhou-style gardens built abroad and other famous gardens of the South. Zhuozheng Garden is an example of gardens within the museum; it uses miniature mountains and rock crags to create its illusions. A number of other gardens use water as their main component. Both the gardens themselves and the museum are well worth visiting.

Classical Gardens of Suzhou (UNESCO/NHK)
Classical Chinese garden design, which seeks to recreate natural landscapes in miniature, is nowhere better illustrated than in the nine gardens in the historic city of Suzhou. They are generally acknowledged to be masterpieces of the genre. Dating from the 11th-19th century, the gardens reflect the profound metaphysical importance of natural beauty in Chinese culture in their meticulous design.

the city of classical gardens---Suzhou
Suzhou is very famous for its gardens and we recommend either going to the Humble Administrators Garden or the Garden of the Master of Nets. Both gardens were built in the traditional Southern Chinese style, that landscaping is done according the water lines and is very different from the bold and extravagant gardens in Northern China. Head over if you want a place to relax. You can stroll through the many pavilions and embrace the lovely nature that surrounds you.
The newly built Suzhou Museum is also worth a visit, as are Shan Tang Roads and Ping Jiang Road. These 2 streets will be buzzing with people and you can sample delicious snacks. The most scenic form of transportation in Suzhuo is the Wu Peng Boat.

ZHENGZHOU - Henan Museum: SUZHOU - Lingering Garden & Grand Canal
“Beautiful places are almost alive! When you visit them, you can feel their breaths!” - Mehmet Murat
Our final day in Zhengzhou ended with a visit to China’s oldest museum - Henan Museum - a history and archaeology museum that is home to many relics including dinosaur bones and fossils; bronze vessels; and pottery and porcelain wares from the various dynasties in China’s history. It was interesting to learn that some relics had been unearthed during recent construction works in the local area.
Following our museum visit we then boarded our coach to transfer to Zhengzhou Railway Station for our high-speed train ride to Suzhou. We farewelled James our tour guide and obediently teamed up with our Aussie co-travellers and hastily manoeuvred ourselves (and luggage) on to the train. Although we had already completed one high-speed train ride, our excitement could not be contained when this train recorded a speed of 350km/hr …. WOW!!!
After our 4.5hr trip, we finally arrived at Suzhou Railway station and promptly exited the train and proceeded to haul our luggage through the terminus to search for our diligent Cruise 1st flag-waving tour guide …. BINGO we had found him! Joe calmly directed us to a cavalcade of waiting coaches.
After settling in to our hotel room, we decided to explore the nearby restaurants for our dinner options. It was here that we utilised some expert Pictionary skills and the odd ‘game’ of Charades to successfully communicate our order with the patient and friendly staff. Our order promptly arrived, and the staff eagerly waited for confirmation that we were satisfied with our meals. They were impressed to see two big smiles with an accompanying thumbs up.
Next morning, we visited the famous Lingering Garden – a renowned classical Chinese garden that is recognised as a World Heritage Site. There is much to explore at Lingering Garden, and we moseyed through the themed sections admiring the diversity of buildings, towering trees, fantastic rockeries, ponds and beautiful Bonsais.
Our next quest was to “Venice of the East”, where we embarked on a short cruise boat ride on a tributary (city moat) of the ancient Suzhou Grand Canal. As we cruised past several old city gates, fascinating bridges and weathered buildings, we were fascinated to learn this section of the Canal was built in 852AD. Joe provided us with an expert commentary and explained numerous interesting facts and history about the canal and the surrounding area. DID YOU KNOW? The Grand Canal is the longest (1776km) as well as the oldest canal or artificial river in the world!
China is known for its silk, so of course a visit to the Silk Spinning Factory was in order and ended with the small purchase of some comfy silk socks and jocks. Afterwards, we boarded our coach for a 2hr coach ride to our next destination - Hangzhou. With grumbling tummies, we eagerly ventured out to explore the nearby restaurants and shops for some dinner. We eventually agreed on a quaint restaurant, and much to the amusement of the helpful staff, we courageously selected our meals from the photos on the board.
We happily settled into our hotel room and celebrated our unforgettable adventures!
Time to hit the road!
