Goodbye to the Big Fork River
We sold our land along the Big Fork River this week. This is the location I spent four months living alone out of a tent, and where I wrote the novel: THIS SIDE OF A WILDERNESS, and the journal: THE UNPEOPLED SEASON. It is also where we celebrated our wedding, buried a good dog Sly, and the first wild land our daughter visited.
We knew that living in Montana as we now do, that visiting the property would be seldom, and so it made more sense to sell it. Even at this distance, and after signing the closing documents, I am still connected to that place. This is because the land possesses us, even if we hold a deed in our name, or in this case – no longer. It is us being owned. And by the right land, I am proud to have been a possession.
Or, as my friend Timothy Goodwin wrote: “…we do not own these woods, they own us.”
Attached is a short-story photo-journal of the journey surrounding our time with that land.

Holland Lake Public Access Project
Nestled between the Bob Marshall Wilderness to the east and the Mission Mountain Wilderness to the west, Montana's Swan Valley offers one of the most scenic landscapes in Big Sky Country.
It is here that the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation worked with a conservation-minded family and the U.S. forest Service to permanently protect 640 acres of prime summer and winter habitat for elk, whitetail deer, grizzly bears and a wide array of other species.
RMEF then conveyed that land to the Flathead National Forest so it is now open to public access and belongs to all Americans.

The Holland Lake Project, as it's called, is a crucial one not only because it protects the wildlife values of the land but because a threat of development hung over it.
It is now forever protected and features vital wildlife and riparian habitat as well as recreational opportunities for all to experience.
