Located near Black Mountain, North Carolina, The Swannanoa Valley Museum requires a bit more walking than most museums. In fact, the hiking tours offered eleven times a year by the museum allow the hikers to see pieces of the historic vistas scattered across the Swannanoa Valley. Hikers will not only travel across some of the same paths as many of the first Americans did, but also explore the museum building itself, where the many exhibits showcase the life and culture of Swannanoa Valley.

Walking around Curtis Creek Campground - Old Fort, NC - RV Camping
Courtesy of Recreation.gov
Overview
Curtis Creek Campground is nestled in the mountains at the base of the Blue Ridge just minutes from the quaint town of Old Fort and less than an hour from the popular city of Asheville. Located in the first tract of National Forest land in the eastern US at the site of an old Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) camp, the campground is surrounded by old growth forests and roaring trout streams. The gravel road through the campground ascends to the Blue Ridge Parkway, providing easy access to the Mount Mitchell area.
Natural Features:
Located in rich mountain hardwood forests at an elevation of 2,000 feet, Curtis Creek Campground provides a secluded streamside setting. Curtis Creek, a popular trout stream surrounded by lush rhododendron and hemlock, runs along the east side of the campground. Old-growth forests cover the mountain peaks on either side of the valley. The Curtis Creek area provides beautiful scenery year-round, from stunning fall foliage displays to abundant spring and summer wildflowers.
Recreation:
Visitors to the campground can enjoy a variety of activities including fishing, swimming, day hiking, picnicking, and scenic driving. Curtis Creek is well known for its excellent trout fishing. Swimming holes along the creek provide wading opportunities on hot summer days. History buffs will enjoy exploring the remains of the old CCC buildings surrounding the campground. Two Forest Service trails depart from the campground. The Hickory Branch trail provides a short (approximately 1/2 mile) hike to a series of waterfalls, and longer hikes to access the backcountry area around Mackey Mountain. Mackey Mountain and the valley of Mackey Creek contain the largest unbroken tract of old-growth forest in the Pisgah National Forest. The Snooks Nose trail provides a strenuous hike to a ridge with beautiful views, eventually ending at the Blue Ridge Parkway. Many other Forest Service trails are within a short drive of the campground, including Catawba Falls and Point Lookout trail.
Facilities:
The campground provides a variety of campsites. There are three loops with 25 sites. One loop is fully accessible, barrier free and can accommodate RVs up to 35ft. A second loop features dispersed tent-only roadside sites that provide a secluded forest experience. A third loop features tent-only sites in an open grassy area. All sites include a tent pad, picnic table, lantern post, and fire ring. Vault toilets, drinking water pumps, and bear-proof trash and recycling receptacles are provided. A campground host is on site to provide visitor assistance.
Nearby Attractions:
Curtis Creek Campground is six miles from the town of Old Fort, which has a variety of restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, and medical facilities. Popular attractions in Old Fort include the Mountain Gateway Museum, the Old Train Depot, Davidson Fort, Catawba Falls, and Andrews Geyser. The campground is seven miles from the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, close to Mount Mitchell State Park. Visitors can make trips to nearby Black Mountain (15 miles) and Asheville (30 miles) to visit art galleries, shops, and restaurants.

Big Tom Wilson explains the search for Dr. Elisha Mitchell in the Black Mountains
Dr. Elisha Mitchell disappeared in the Black Mountains of North Carolina on June 27, 1857. It was in early July that Big Tom Wilson and a small search party found Dr. Mitchell's body in the bottom of a pool near the mountain that was named for him.
Dr. Mitchell, at the time of his death, had been remeasuring the elevation of North Carolina's highest peak, Mount Mitchell, the peak that had been named after him. Mount Mitchell, at 2,037 metres (6,684 feet) is the highest peak of the Appalachian Mountains and the highest peak in the eastern United States.
This historical presentation is located in the Mount Mitchell State Park's Natural History Museum near the Stone Observation Tower on the mountain's summit. Mount Mitchell State Park is 698.9 hectares (1,727 acres) in size and is accessible via the Blue Ridge Parkway from nearby Asheville, North Carolina.

N&W Class J #611 Spring Excursion - THE BLUE RIDGE SPECIAL April 10, 2016
Come along with Diesel and I as we spend the day chasing the N&W Class J #611 Spring Excursion - THE BLUE RIDGE SPECIAL Train was scheduled to make it's way westbound on the Norfolk Southern Piedmont Division, Asheville District S Line from the North Carolina Transportation Museum at 7am and arrive in Asheville NC by 1230pm. On approach to Old Fort NC, just east of the depot, it stopped for a brief time for a crew change. As you can see from the video, there was a great turn out! This was due in part to an article that ran in the mcdowellnews.com website, as you can see, railfans and townspeople galore turned out for this event. I will post a link to the article below. Once 611 cleared Old Fort, we made our way threw the throngs of people that visited Andrew's Geyser and ended up at near the exit of the Swannanoa Gap Tunnel at RIDGECREST and captured it just west of the tunnel exit. Layoffs in the Future?
State employment officials say a Buncombe County defense contractor is planning layoffs. They say the Kearfott Corporation is considering laying off as many as 80 workers at its plant in Black Mountain. The plant makes rotors and controls for the military's hi-tech fleet of weapons. Kearfott hasn't posted any notices with the state, but Black Mountain officials say the plant is a big part of the economy of the Swannanoa Valley. They're concerned about a drop in manufacturing jobs, but they say diversity in the area's businesses can make up for the ups and downs experienced by defense contractors. We contacted Kearfott about potential layoffs here. Officials of it's parent company, Astronautics Corporation, and officials here at the plant did not return our calls.

Couple Loses Everything in Swannanoa House Fire
SWANNANOA, N.C. -- A Buncombe County couple is without a home, but say they are also lucky to be alive.
Their house in Swannanoa burned to the ground Tuesday night along with everything they owned.
The fire lit up the mountainside high above town. A narrow road, no turnarounds and no municipal water left five fire departments with few options.
It was a very tight spot, you know, trying to get the firefighters up here, get the water up here, get it going, it was just a very impossible situation from the firefighters standpoint, neighbor Paul Graves said.
Light of day made it clear very little could be done. There is very little left -- charred walls, remnants of a kitchen and appliances. About all there was to be salvaged were a couple of scorched safe-boxes.
Frank Norton's daughter Donna and her husband George lived at the home. Frank says he feels blessed because they were all together Tuesday night. The couple was at a late family Christmas gathering at a granddaughter's place in town while the fire raged on.
What they have is the clothes they have on their [backs], wearing when they went to dinner, Norton said.
To help the couple financially, go to any SunTrust Bank branch in Western North Carolina. There you can make donation to special account in the name of Donna Norton Howington
