This is a short video about what you might do if George Town , Penang is a port stop on your cruise. We decided to just walk up to an area known as Little India. It was about 2 miles round trip from the ship. We spent 2 - 3 hours ashore. We only spent money on bottled water at a 7-11.

Penang’s cruise terminal at Swettenham Pier gets expansion plan
Penang is set to take a huge leap forward in its position in the cruise industry with Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) entering a joint venture with a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL), one of the largest international cruise operators in the world, to redevelop the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal in Weld Quay, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said today.
The redevelopment by PPSB and RCL Development Holdings (Penang) Sdn Bhd will see the pier taking Oasis-Class ships, the largest in the world, to berth at the terminal by the end of next year.

The Port of Penang, the main harbour in northern Malaysia, is operated by the Penang Port Commission. The Port consists of seven facilities, with six of them in Butterworth and Perai on the mainland, including the North Butterworth Container Terminal, Butterworth Deep Water Wharves and the Prai Bulk Cargo Terminal. The Port of Penang, the third busiest seaport in Malaysia, handled more than 1.52 million TEUs of cargo in 2017.
Meanwhile, Swettenham Pier, situated in the heart of George Town, is the sole Port facility on Penang Island. The pier now accommodates cruise ships, making it one of the major entry points into Penang. As of 2017, Swettenham Pier recorded 1.35 million tourist arrivals, thereby surpassing Port Klang as the busiest cruise shipping terminal in Malaysia; the pier has also attracted some of the world's largest cruise liners, such as the RMS Queen Mary 2. The pier also serves as a homeport for regional-based cruise ships.
Occasionally, the Port of Penang hosts warships as well, including those from Singapore, the United States and most recently, China.
The cross-strait Rapid Ferry service connects George Town and Butterworth, and was formerly the only transportation link between Penang Island and the mainland until the completion of the Penang Bridge in 1985. At the time of writing, six ferries ply the Penang Strait between George Town and Butterworth daily.

George Town, the capital city of the Malaysian state of Penang, is located at the north-eastern tip of Penang Island. It is Malaysia's second largest city, with 708,127 inhabitants as of 2010, while Greater Penang is the nation's second biggest conurbation with a population of 2,412,616. The historical core of George Town has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.
Established as an entrepôt by Francis Light of the British East India Company in 1786, George Town was the first British settlement in Southeast Asia.[10] Together with Singapore and Malacca, George Town formed part of the Straits Settlements, which became a British crown colony in 1867. It was subjugated by Japan during World War II, before being recaptured by the British at war's end. Shortly before Malaya attained independence from the British in 1957, George Town was declared a city by Queen Elizabeth II, making it the first city in the country's modern history.
Due to the intermingling of the various ethnicities and religions that arrived on its shores, George Town acquired a large eclectic assortment of colonial and Asian architectural styles. It also gained a reputation as Malaysia's gastronomic capital for its distinct and ubiquitous street food. Moreover , the city hosts unique cultural heritage, such as the Peranakans whose legacies are still visible on Penang's architecture and cuisine.
The city of George Town includes the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, a high-tech manufacturing hub regarded as the Silicon Valley of the East. The city also serves as the financial centre of northern Malaysia and the nation's most vital medical tourism hub. Logistically, the Penang International Airport links George Town with several major regional cities, while a ferry service, the Penang Bridge and the Second Penang Bridge connect the city with the rest of Peninsular Malaysia. Meanwhile, George Town's Swettenham Pier has emerged as the busiest port-of-call in Malaysia for cruise shipping.

The cruise liners coming in March include Diamond Princess, Star Clipper and Mein Schiff 1.
This morning, thousands of passengers on cruise liners Mariner of the Sea and AIDAbella arrived in Penang for a day trip.
Mariner of the Sea with some 3,400 passengers had sailed up from Singapore while AIDAbella with 2,600 came from Phuket.
For their day-trip, they can go up Penang Hill, or enjoy the coastal areas like Teluk Bahang, where they can check out Entopia.
They can also go shopping or visit Komtar tower, which is now quite popular with The Top that has the Rainbow Skywalk on the roof where visitors get a 360-degree view of George Town and its surroundings.
Trishaw rides around George Town remain quite popular. Visitors get to see the inner city, the heritage sites and the street art before they return to the cruise liners by 5pm.
Penang to ask for RM10bil funds from PM for two major projects
Penang is planning to ask Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for a RM10 billion funding for its two major infrastructure projects in the state.
